Focused ethnography of nurses' interactions and behaviours in the therapeutic positioning of patients with traumatic brain injury in Pakistan: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Proper positioning in trauma care is essential to prevent associated complications by stabilising haemodynamics, preserving the spine, securing the airway and protecting skin integrity. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in Pakistan, necessitating rigorous safety measures and high-quality care due to their severe impact and high mortality rates. Resource-limited settings face significant challenges in providing adequate neurosurgical services. Moreover, there is a notable gap in the existing literature regarding effective care of patients wi

Trauma intensive care unit (TICU) at Hamad General Hospital.

Trauma is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide, and thus represents a great global health challenge. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 9% of deaths in the world are the result of trauma.1 In addition, approximately 100 million people are temporarily or permanently disabled every year.2 The situation is no different in Qatar, and injury related morbidity and mortality is increasing in the entire region, with road traffic collisions (RTCs) being the most common mechanism.1 It is well recognized now that trauma care provided in high-volume, dedicated, level-one tr

The hidden morbidity of pediatric trauma.

In an attempt to characterize the emotional and behavioral consequences of severe multisystem injury on pediatric trauma patients and members of their immediate family, 54 former trauma patients and their families were studied at least 1 year after discharge. Of those in a home setting, 60% had residual personality changes. Physical and cognitive handicaps, often multiple, were present in 50%; and social, affective, and learning disabilities were present in like number. Only 20% of the 50 children are in a regular school class; the other 80% require special-needs education. An unexpected findi

The impact of the second victim phenomenon on nurse turnover intentions and absenteeism: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Second Victim Phenomenon (SVP) is the psychological trauma that healthcare workers experience due to their negative experiences with patients. Its incidence in nurses is well known, but its quantitative implications on nurse retention and attendance are poorly understood. This systematic review and meta-analysis summarizes the evidence regarding the relationship between SVP and nurse turnover intentions and absenteeism. METHODS: A systematic search of the PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library (CENTRAL) databases was conducted through April 2026, foll

Bidirectional analysis of the association between migraine and post-traumatic stress disorder in Nurses' Health Study II.

AIMS: Migraine and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are both twice as common in women as men. Cross-sectional studies have shown associations between migraine and several psychiatric conditions, including PTSD. PTSD is disproportionally common among patients in headache clinics, and individuals with migraine and PTSD report greater disability from migraines and more frequent medication use. To further clarify the nature of the relationship between PTSD and migraine, we conducted bidirectional analyses of the association between (1) migraine and incident PTSD and (2) PTSD and incident migr

Carotid artery dissection.

Carotid artery dissection (CAD) is one of the more common causes of stroke in persons younger than 50 years. In this age group and in older persons, CAD is most often associated with trauma. Significant morbidity can be a consequence of CAD, particularly a stroke or other permanent neurologic deficit. Because stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, attention has focused in the past decade on understanding the phenomenon of dissection of the carotid artery. This article presents a review of the risk factors associated with CAD, the role of the nurse as a provider of car
