Fasciolopsiasis, or infection by the intestinal fluke, Fascilopsis buski, is endemic in the eastern states of our country. While it is by no means a rarity, especially in the rural set up, awareness regarding this common parasitic infestation is still a much-needed entity. The importance of a strong degree of suspicion and early diagnosis cannot be over emphasised, if a successful campaign is to be launched in its control. With this as our central theme, we proceed to report a case of and unsually heavy Fasciolopsis buski infection in our hospital, which had failed to be diagnosed in a semi ur

The flame bulb is formed by a terminal cell and a proximal canal cell. The weir consists of interdigitating ribs all of which form one circle, i.e. alternating ribs do not have distinctly 'internal' or 'external' positions. Cytoplasmic cords are absent and all ribs, i.e. those continuous with the proximal canal cell and those continuous with the terminal cell, form external leptotriches. At least some external leptotriches have interconnected branches extending along the flame bulb. Internal leptotriches are not branched and arise from the basal perikaryon of the terminal cell. In the cytoplas

The digenean, Eurytrema procyonis, found in the pancreatic ducts of the raccoon (Procyon lotor), is reported for the first time from a juvenile female raccoon captured in July 1987, in New York State (USA). The presence of greater than 183 trematodes in the pancreatic ducts was an incidental finding at necropsy to an interstitial pneumonia which had caused emaciation, and for which the animal was euthanized. The pancreas, with the exception of the major pancreatic duct, was histologically normal. The duct, containing the parasites, was dilated and contained a diffuse subepithelial inflammatory

The development of eggs of Fasciolopsis buski requires oxygen and the eggs cannot survive anaerobic conditions. The eggs have some resistance to low temperature and can be maintained at 4 degrees C for 3 to 4 months; however, the eggs are killed at 50 degrees C in four hours. The presence of salts can influence the development time of the eggs and reduce their hatching rate. Encysted cercariae exist not only on aquatic plants, but also on the surface of the water. The number of encysted cercariae floating on the water surface is about 3.6% of that of the total encysted cercariae. By inquiring

Paragonimiasis is a zoonotic trematode infection caused by Paragonimus spp. To determine the recent status of Paragonimus infections in wild animals, this study investigated Paragonimus spp. in 39 raccoon dogs and 54 Japanese badgers from March 2019 to January 2021 in Miyazaki Prefecture, and examined metacercariae in freshwater crabs. Triploid P. westermani was found in one raccoon dog (2.6%), and metacercariae were recovered from Eriocheir japonica captured near the infected animal collected. One Japanese badger (1.9%) harbored P. skrjabini miyazakii; this prevalence was lower than the appro

Hepatosplenic schistosomiasis is due to chronic parasitic trematode infections with various Schistosoma sp. The Schistosoma life cycle requires contamination of surface water by infected human or animal excreta, specific freshwater snail intermediate hosts and human skin contact with water. The disease is prevalent in many developing tropical areas, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa as well as in Southeast Asia. Deposition of Schistosoma eggs in the hepatic portal system leads to periportal fibrosis, cirrhosis and portal hypertension but little hepatocellular damage. Portal hypertension of an…

Coprolites of the seal Pachyphoca volkodavi from the Upper Miocene deposits (Kherson) of the Fortepyanka locality (Republic of Adygea) were studied. Two out of five seal coprolites contained a structure resembling fish muscle tissue and included objects with morphology of trematode metacercariae. Obviously, the larvae of the parasite got into the digestive tract of seals from the fish they ate. Microscopic analysis of the coprolites did not reveal helminth eggs, which indicates possible absence of infection.

The resistance of B. tenagophila snails to infection by Schistosoma mansoni was studied. These snails had been previously inoculated with hemolymph talsen from other snails infected by S. mansoni of SJ strain or by other trematodes. The findings suggest that two types--cellular and humoral--are responsible for the resistance to infection by S. mansoni. The cellular response occurred when the snails were inoculated with hemolymph from snails infected by S. mansoni, B. tenagophila inoculate with hemolymph from snails infected by furcocercariae without eye-spot, also showed resistance to the infe

All the parasitic diseases which may affect the face and the mouth are reviewed. Protozoan and helminths infections are described as well as arthropod bites and envenomation by other animals. Protozoan infections of interest to the oral and maxillofacial specialist are leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis, cutaneous amebiasis, and toxoplasmosis. Helminth infections are due to nematodes, trematodes, and cestodes. Nematoda (true roundworm) infections include ankylostomiasis, strongyloidiasis, gnathostomiasis, gongylonemiasis, trichinosis, dracunculosis, loaiasis, filariasis, dirofilariasis, and onchoc
