Hemoglobinopathies are the most common genetic diseases in Turkey. Sickle cell anemia is prevalent in the Cukurova region but beta-thalassemia (thal) is seen all over the country. The incidence of sickle cell trait is 10% and beta-thal trait is 3.7% in this region. The families at risk for hemoglobinopathies have come to our center for prenatal diagnosis since 1992. We attempted to isolate West Nile virus from mosquitoes collected in the field for the first time in Turkey. A total of 6,457 mosquito specimens from Culex pipiens Linnaeus, Ochlerotatus caspius (Pallas) and Aedes spp. species were included in this study. Culex pipiens samples made up 56% of the total species, O. caspius 24% and Aedes spp 20%. Filariasis is a parasitic condition in which the lymphatic system is invaded by filarial nematodes. The initial signs are those of lymphangitis and lymphadenitis. The manifestations include edema in the extremities and elephantiasis due to lymphatic obstruction. Filariasis is endemic to most parts of the world, but occurs only sporadically in Turkey. This report describes a case of filariasis in a child who presented with fever and extensive lower-extremity edema.

The aim of this study was to determine the rubella seroprevalence in women of reproductive age. This cross-sectional study was conducted on women aged 15-49 years. Serologic studies were performed by using the ELISA method. The number of women enrolled in the study was 607, the mean age was 30.7+/-9.3 years and 13.2% of the participants were living in the rural area. Rubella seroprevalence was 55.0%.
