What should be done with antisocial personality disorder in the new edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V)?

Antisocial personality disorder, psychopathy, dissocial personality disorder and sociopathy are constructs that have generally been used to predict recidivism and dangerousness, alongside being used to exclude patients from treatment services. However, 'antisocial personality disorder' has recently begun to emerge as a treatment diagnosis, a development reflected within cognitive behaviour therapy and mentalisation-based psychotherapy. Many of the behaviour characteristics of antisocial personality disorder are, at the same time, being targeted by interventions at criminal justice settings. A

Impact of childhood trauma on postpartum depression: a prospective study.

Studies on the impact of childhood trauma on postpartum depression show inconsistencies and methodological limitations. The present study examines the effect of childhood trauma on depression 12 and 24 weeks after childbirth, while controlling for history of depression, depression symptoms during pregnancy and type D personality. During the third trimester of pregnancy, 210 women completed self-report questionnaires assessing depression (current and/or past episodes), childhood trauma and type D personality, of whom 187 participated in the postpartum follow-up, with depression symptoms being r

Clinical characteristics of late-onset schizophrenia and delusional disorder.

We compared 20 patients with late-onset schizophrenia, 7 with delusional disorder with hallucinations (paraphrenia), and 13 with delusional disorder without hallucinations (late-onset paranoia). We found that these three categories could be distinguished from each other on some clinical parameters. Late-onset schizophrenia was characterized by bizarre delusions; auditory hallucinations; to a lesser degree, first-rank and negative symptoms; and premorbid personality of the paranoid or schizoid type. Paraphrenia was associated with predominantly nonbizarre delusions, auditory hallucinations, ear

[Evaluation of temperament and personality in bulimia nervosa].

UNLABELLED: Previous studies revealed the possibility of abnormal personality development role in the etiology of eating disorders. It was found that a diagnosis of personality disorders, mostly borderline personality and/or histrionic personality can be made in about 44-46% of bulimic patients. The inconsistencies in identifying personality types using categorical assessment approaches have encouraged a conceptualization of the personality from a dimensional perspective. It was revealed that the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ) and Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) are u

Risk Gambling and Personality: Results from a Representative Swedish Sample.

The association between personality and gambling has been explored previously. However, few studies are based on representative populations. This study aimed at examining the association between risk gambling and personality in a representative Swedish population. A random Swedish sample (N = 19,530) was screened for risk gambling using the Lie/Bet questionnaire. The study sample (N = 257) consisted of those screening positive on Lie/Bet and completing a postal questionnaire about gambling and personality (measured with the NODS-PERC and the HP5i respectively). Risk gambling was positively cor

[Anxious (avoidant) personality disorder].

The anxious (avoidant or fearful) type of personality disorder has a lifetime prevalence of 5%, which makes it the most common form of personality disorder. Although it is one of the leading risk factors for severe depressive illnesses, anxiety disorders, substance dependence, eating disorders and chronic pain, its importance is frequently underestimated. Ambulatory treatment comprises psychoeducation, self-management and training in social competence.

Mood-congruent and mood-incongruent psychotic symptoms in major depression: the role of severity and personality.

BACKGROUND: Whether psychotic symptoms in major depression (MD) are better explained by a "severity model" or by a "vulnerability model", with personality as a predisposing factor, is still debated. The aim of the present study was to evaluate in MD the relationship between the content of psychotic features (mood congruent (MC) or mood incongruent (MI)) and severity of depression or personality traits. METHODS: 62 inpatients affected by MD with psychotic features were divided into three groups on the basis of the content of psychotic symptoms: MC, MI, mixed MC-MI. All subjects completed the S

Interpersonal guilt as a pathway linking childhood trauma and personality dysfunction: The contribution of epistemic mistrust.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma is strongly implicated in personality dysfunction. Control Mastery Theory emphasizes the role of pathogenic beliefs and interpersonal guilt in generating and sustaining psychopathology. Epistemic mistrust (EM) undermines social learning and relational functioning. This study is the first to investigate the relationship between interpersonal guilt and EM, and their joint mediating role in the link between childhood trauma and personality dysfunction. METHOD: 275 participants completed self-report measures of childhood trauma, interpersonal guilt, EM, and personalit

Nonpsychotic personality disturbances: a re-evaluation and reclassification.

The classical notion of neurosis as the prototypical form of nonpsychotic personality disturbance must be rejected in favor of the categories of (a) personality pattern disturbance and disorder of life style, and most especially, (b) character disorder. Category (a) would include schizoid, paranoid, and cyclothymic personality pattern disturbances and compulsive and hysteroid personality as disorders of life style. Each of these would occupy one end of a 'psychotoid' continuum, at the other end of which would be a familiar type of psychosis such as paranoid schizophrenia or pseudoneurotic schi

The Burden on Cohabitants of Patients with Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (CSU) has been associated with patients’ poor quality of life. Despite being a chronic disease that could alter the quality of life of the people who live with patients, the potential burden on their cohabitants has not been studied to date. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between the patient’s quality of life, disease control, disease duration and family quality of life and the cohabitant’s mood disturbances, sexual dysfunction, type D personality and sleep quality. The relationship between traumatic experiences, dissociation, and borderline personality pathology among male forensic patients and prisoners.

In the present study the relationship between traumatic experiences, dissociation, and borderline personality disorder pathology is examined in a group of 39 male forensic patients and 192 male prisoners. Sexual and emotional abuse are significantly more common among forensic patients than among prisoners. Patients also report a broader range of different kinds of traumas. Prisoners report significantly more dissociative symptoms. Analyses of the relationship of type of trauma on the one hand and dissociation and borderline personality pathology on the other show that sexual abuse is significa

If personality disorder is just maladaptive traits, there is no such thing as personality disorder.

The diagnosis of personality disorder (PD) is undergoing a transition from a categorical model that distinguishes types from one another to a model that characterizes patients with dimensional profiles. The DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th ed.) alternative model of personality disorder (AMPD) and the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (11th ed.) have two primary criteria: the first is a dimension that differentiates PD from both normal personality and other kinds of disorder, can be used to indicate the overall leve

The link between bipolar disorders and creativity: evidence from personality and temperament studies.

Although extensive literature supports connections between bipolar disorder and creativity, possible mechanisms underlying such relationships are only beginning to emerge. Herein we review evidence supporting one such possible mechanism, namely that personality/temperament contribute to enhanced creativity in individuals with bipolar disorder, a theory supported by studies showing that certain personality/temperamental traits are not only common to bipolar disorder patients and creative individuals but also correlate with measures of creativity. Thus, we suggest based on studies using three im

Exploring the association between lower serum BDNF levels and delayed-onset PTSD in physically injured patients with vulnerable personality traits: A two-year prospective study.

This longitudinal study investigated the relationships among serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (sBDNF) levels, personality types, and the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), distinguishing between earlier- and delayed-onset PTSD over two years in individuals with physical injuries. A total of 895 adults with moderate to severe injuries were recruited from a trauma center and assessed within one month post-injury. Baseline evaluations included sBDNF measurements and personality assessments using the Big Five Inventory-10, which classified participants as having either res
