During the last years sonographic assessment of pathologies of the peripheral nerves has not only become increasingly popular but has also proved to be a valid procedure. High-resolution ultrasonography (HRUS) is nowadays also performed with regard to the assessment of cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS). Therefore, we now demonstrate special sonographic features of a rather frequent pathology of the peripheral nervous system that is often difficult to diagnose and treat--the primary and secondary forms of the cubital tunnel syndrome. Besides the mandatory technical requisites, a special focus is p

Subjective outcome was assessed in 100 patients with cubital tunnel syndrome at least 2 years after anterior transmuscular transposition of the ulnar nerve. The mean time from surgery was 37 months (standard deviation, 10 months). The patient sample of 119 operated cases included 81 unilateral procedures and 19 patients had bilateral procedures. The mean time between surgeries was 7 months. Sixty-one patients who underwent unilateral procedures reported improvement, and there was no difference in 13 unilateral cases. Thirteen patients who underwent bilateral procedures reported improvement in

AIM: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is common in head-injured patients. Ulnar nerve compression by HO at the elbow is rare. The purpose of this study was to establish a strategy for the management of ulnar nerve compression secondary to HO at the elbow.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The authors report a retrospective study (2000-2008) of five cases of ulnar nerve compression at the elbow secondary to HO. All patients were male (mean age, 33 years). The HO was secondary to head injury (four cases) and severe burn (one case). According to the Dellon's classification, the ulnar nerve entrapment was sever

Peripheral nerve entrapment syndromes involve the compression of a short segment of a nerve at a specific site, as a result of the vulnerability of that nerve as it passes through a fibroosseous tunnel or an opening in fibrous or muscular tissue. Injury of the nerve may occur as a result of compression by the overlying structures. Another mechanism of injury is traction of the nerve, with or without friction of the nerve, as it travels and sharply changes direction around critical points. Imaging can be particularly helpful for the diagnosis of these uncommon injuries. Percutaneous decompressi

A case of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (S.T.S.) in a patient with Persistence of the Median Artery is reported. The Authors consider this rare-condition as a possible cause of C.T.S. The persisting vessel may cause a damage to the Median Nerve in two difeent ways: 1) Compression and 2) Ischemia. The latter pathogenesis is expecially advocated when anastomotic connection between the Median Artery and the Radial and Ulnar Arteries as well as the Superficial Palmar Arch are poor. Two different clinical pictures are possible: an acute onset, after a thrombosis, or a chronic impairment when the vessel is

The objectives of this article were to study the impact of the hand function disability due to ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) on workers engaged in occupations requiring heavy hand use. Four patients (42.5 +/- 7 years old), all engaged in heavy-duty jobs, with severe conduction block but without severe axonal loss were recruited. The severity of ulnar nerve compression was quantified based on electrophysiologic studies, Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test, Jamar dynamometer, and Semmes-Weinstein Monofilaments Test. UNE resulted in a reduction in hand strength without any significant impact o

A case of compression of the deep branch of the ulnar nerve associated with pseudarthrosis of the base of the fifth metacarpal and the upper shaft of the fourth metacarpal is reported. The delayed procedure consisted in volar decompression of the ulnar nerve by dividing the pisi-hamate ligament and plating and grafting of both fractures. The patient achieved marked improvement four weeks post-operatively and had complete functional recovery at follow-up of 16 years after injury without narrowing of the hamato-metacarpal joint despite synostosis of the bases of the medial metacarpals.

15 of 271 patients (6%) treated with chronic hemodialysis developed peripheral nerve entrapment syndrome of the median or the ulnar nerve. The majority of these patients were female (p less than 0.03). Fistulas located in arms with nerve entrapment tended to have higher flow rates than fistulas located in arms without nerve entrapment (57%) vs. 4.4%, p less than 0.001). There was no correlation with the renal diagnosis, previous access surgery in the involved arm, the type of vascular access used, the duration of hemodialysis, the adequacy of dialysis, calcium or phosphate homeostasis, plasma

BACKGROUND: Entrapment neuropathy of the ulnar nerve at the level of the elbow is the shared domain of multiple surgical specialties. A wide variety of operative methods for its surgical management have been reported. Our hospital utilizes neurolysis (NL) and subcutaneous transposition (AST). The aim of this paper was to compare the clinical outcomes in patients treated by ulnar nerve transposition versus neurolysis over a 20-year period.
METHODS: We included patients who underwent either neurolysis or an ulnar nerve transposition. A retrospective analysis was performed which included 480 pat

Wheelchair athletes commonly experience hand pain and numbness. This investigation studied the prevalence, location, and risk factors of upper extremity peripheral nerve entrapment among wheelchair athletes. Clinical and electrodiagnostic assessments were performed on both upper extremities of 28 wheelchair athletes and 30 able-bodied controls. Included in the assessment were short-segment stimulation techniques of the median nerve across the carpal tunnel and the ulnar nerve across the elbow. By clinical criteria, the prevalence of nerve entrapment among the wheelchair athletes was 23%, where

We investigated the relationship between cubital tunnel pressure in patients with cubital tunnel syndrome with osteoarthritis and those without osteoarthritis. We studied 31 elbows in 29 patients. We divided the patients into two groups: one associated with osteoarthritis and the other not associated with osteoarthritis. In the latter group, there was ulnar nerve subluxation in 10 elbows and cubitus valgus in 3. Cubital tunnel pressure was measured intraoperatively with a fiberoptic microtransducer. The extraneural pressure with the elbow flexed was significantly increased in patients with ost

The incidence of cumulative trauma disorder (CTD) has become noteworthy in plants that rely on automated production. This rise was evident in an Ohio poultry company. The purpose of this study was to develop a screening tool to detect employees who might be at risk of sustaining a CTD injury and to identify trends of CTD at specific workstations. Thirty-five employees at three workstations completed a questionnaire and underwent a physical examination. Results identified 24 employees with a potential for CTD, and these employees were recommended for remediation. Job modifications and supportiv

BACKGROUND: Nerve compression disorders, such as carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and ulnar entrapment at the elbow (UNE), may be associated with apoptosis and neuroprotective mechanisms in the peripheral nerve that may be detected by biomarkers in the blood. The relationships between CTS and UNE and two biomarkers of apoptosis, i.e., caspase-3 and caspase-8, and the neuroprotective factor Heat Shock Protein 27 (HSP27) in plasma were examined in a population-based cohort.
METHOD: The biomarkers caspase-3, caspase-8 and HSP27 were measured in plasma at inclusion of 4,284 study participants aged 46
