Ultrasound is an established method of confirming the presence of a hydatidiform mole in utero. The incidence of endotoxemia was studied in 17 patients who underwent ultrasonic lithotripsy (USL), and compared with the incidence in 11 patients who underwent transurethral resection (TUR) and in 8 patients who underwent other operations. Fourteen of 17 patients (82%) who underwent ultrasonic lithotripsy had endotoxemia. The incidence of endotoxemia after USL was significantly higher than that after TUR (9%) or after other operations (12.5%). Only 2 of the 17 patients (12%) who underwent USL had bacteremia. The present study aims at an assessment of hepato-splenomegaly in infectious mononucleosis (IM). In 29 patients admitted to the ENT department with IM, based on the typical clinical and laboratory findings, including a positive mononucleosis test in most cases, the size of the liver and spleen was estimated by ultrasonic scanning on days 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30, 90 and 120 after admission. Percutaneous removal of renal stones is becoming an established procedure, especially for stones lying free in the renal pelvis. These techniques, which include: retrograde pyelography to facilitate a thorough understanding of caliceal anatomy and stone position in 3 dimensions; approaches for accurate placement of a nephrostomy tract for straightline access to the stone and stone removal are discussed.

We report a new technique for mucosal proctectomy that does not require manual separation of the mucosa and submucosa from the underlying muscularis. Mucosal proctectomy using ultrasonic fragmentation of the rectal mucosa was performed in four patients. Three had severe ulcerative colitis, and one patient had radiation proctitis with a rectal stricture. In all cases an endorectal pullthrough with anastomosis to the area of the dentate line was performed. Healing after ultrasonic mucosal proctectomy occurred without infection or retraction. Prenatal real-time ultrasonographic diagnosis of microphthalmia is presented. Diagnosis was made at 18 weeks' gestation in a fetus of a patient with a previous infant affected with the syndrome of cryptophthalmia with absence of septum nasi and ambiguous genitalia (Fraser syndrome). Recognition of microphthalmia as a part of Fraser syndrome and the easy visualization of fetal facial bones and orbits in the second trimester made the diagnosis possible.

The inferior right hepatic vein (IRHV) was demonstrated sonographically in 27 out of 269 patients (10%). It was shown to be thicker than the right hepatic vein in 8 (3%). In 2 patients, two accessory right hepatic veins were demonstrated, with one being the IRHV and the other the middle right hepatic vein. Delineation of the IRHV is significant in hepatectomy, detection of tumor thrombus in hepatocellular carcinoma, Budd-Chiari syndrome, and dilatation of the intrahepatic bile ducts.

Ultrasound is a reliable and safe method for the evaluation of scrotal anatomy. The usual method of ultrasonic examination has been contact scanning with a conventional articulated arm scanner. We herein report our experience in 108 cases using an ultrasonic technique which provides panoramic scans of the entire scrotum and precision tomographic plane placement without distorting the scrotum or causing patient discomfort.

Four captive lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) were subjected to abdominal ultrasonic scanning. Evidence of progressive infection by the enzootic parasite Echinococcus vogeli was observed in all 4 of them. Ultrasonic scanning revealed abdominal disease, with evidence of both hepatic and bowel involvement. Three gorillas subsequently died. Necropsy results validated the ultrasonic diagnoses.
