PURPOSE: To determine awareness of bladder dysfunction and attitudes towards its management among office-based physicians.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 211,648 patients consulting office-based primary care physicians (PCPs), gynaecologists (OBGs) or urologists (UROs) for any reason were given a questionnaire of four questions related to symptoms of bladder dysfunction. PURPOSE: Urinary tract anomalies or dysfunction leaves the bladder unsuitable for urine drainage in a significant proportion of children presenting for kidney transplantation. A case of feline rectal prolapse which appeared to be secondary to transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder is described. The cat was reported to be incontinent and treatment was declined by the owners. Euthanasia was performed and necropsy revealed an extensive nodular thickening of the entire urinary bladder wall. A diagnosis of urinary bladder transitional cell carcinoma was made on histopathological examination.

BACKGROUND: Since the introduction of mass screening of infants for neuroblastoma, the incidence of neuroblastoma has increased in Japan. The reason for this increased incidence is the possible inclusion of many neuroblastomas that would have regressed spontaneously and would never have been detected clinically. An extremely rare tumor at the dome of the urinary bladder in a 7-month-old infant was detected by the mass screening.

Bladder augmentation with intestinal or urinary segments has virtually replaced other treatments in the management of both neuropathic and no neuropathic bladder dysfunction that has not responded to pharmacotherapy nor other intervention. We present herein our experience in 55 patients who underwent augmentation cystoplasty. Their mean age were 12.2 years (range 2.5-22.8) and the mean follow-up time was 4 years (1-13.1). They were divided in three groups according to the diagnosis: vesical or cloacal exstrophy (14 patients), neuropathic bladder (36) and posterior urethral valves (5 patients).

Transplantation of the ureters into the sigmoid colon by Tikhov-Coffey in the authors' modification has been carried out in 10 children. The ureters were placed into the channel made by supramucosal dissection. Good response was achieved in 9 patients. Ureteral iatrogenic lesions occur with variable frequency in the different types of surgery, mainly in uncomplicated abdominal hysterectomy. This paper contributes 29 patients (2 male and 27 female) with several types of lesions, secondary to gynaecological, intestinal and vascular surgery. The series produced 16 cases of clamping, 6 ureterovaginal fistulae, 6 ureteral sections (5 total and 1 partial) and 1 ureterouterine fistula. The terminal ureter was the most frequently damaged. The diagnostic and therapeutical methods used in this type of lesions are analyzed.

The authors report the first instance of a patient with seminoma probably arising from the prostate but also involving the bladder. A 58-year-old man presented with symptoms and signs of prostatic enlargement. Cystoscopy revealed a fungating neoplasm, probably arising from the prostate and surrounding the bladder neck. The biopsy was consistent with the diagnosis of seminoma. The patient experienced complete remission after chemotherapy with bleomycin, cisplatin, and etoposide.

In the present experiments the dependence of tumour induction upon the different phases of the cell cycle in the proliferating urinary bladder was examined. A patient with primary malignant lymphoma of the urinary bladder is presented. Grossly, the bladder showed multiple submucosal masses. Histologically and immunohistochemically, diffuse B-cell lymphoma of the medium-sized cell type was revealed.
