A new tool for assessing Pectus Excavatum by a semi-automatic image processing pipeline calculating the classical severity indexes and a new marker: the Volumetric Correction Index.

BACKGROUND: In clinical assessment of Pectus Excavatum (PE), the indication to surgery is based not only on symptoms but also on quantitative markers calculated from Computed Tomography (CT) or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans. According to clinical routine, these indexes are measured manually by radiologists with limited computer support. This process is time consuming and potentially subjected to inaccuracy and individual variability in measurements. Moreover, the existing indexes have limitations, since they are based on linear measurements performed on single slices rather than on vo

The Expanding Role of Virtual Surgical Planning in Maxillofacial Trauma Management.

Advances in virtual surgical planning (VSP) and computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing continue to transform the management of craniomaxillofacial surgical care. There has been a demonstrable shift toward fully personalized surgical care in postablative head and neck reconstruction, orthognathic and temporomandibular joint surgeries, and in surgery for congenital and acquired anomalies. Surgical management of facial trauma exhibits timing and budgetary challenges that have delayed the adoption of VSP into common practice in the area. This review explores the scope, advantages, and

Beyond Subjectivity: Continuous Cybersickness Detection Using EEG-based Multitaper Spectrum Estimation.

Virtual reality (VR) presents immersive opportunities across many applications, yet the inherent risk of developing cybersickness during interaction can severely reduce enjoyment and platform adoption. Cybersickness is marked by symptoms such as dizziness and nausea, which previous work primarily assessed via subjective post-immersion questionnaires and motion-restricted controlled setups. In this paper, we investigate the dynamic nature of cybersickness while users experience and freely interact in VR. We propose a novel method to continuously identify and quantitatively gauge cybersickness l

DigBody®: A new 3D modeling tool for nasal virtual surgery.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recent studies have demonstrated that a significant number of surgical procedures for nasal airway obstruction (NAO) have a high rate of surgical failure. In part, this problem is due to the lack of reliable objective clinical parameters to aid surgeons during preoperative planning. Modeling tools that allow virtual surgery to be performed do exist, but all require direct manipulation of computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. Specialists in Rhinology have criticized these tools for their complex user interface, and have requested more intuiti

Automated detection of vessel lumen and stent struts in intravascular optical coherence tomography to evaluate stent apposition and neointimal coverage.

PURPOSE: Intravascular optical coherence tomography (IV-OCT) is a high-resolution imaging method used to visualize the microstructure of arterial walls in vivo. IV-OCT enables the clinician to clearly observe and accurately measure stent apposition and neointimal coverage of coronary stents, which are associated with side effects such as in-stent thrombosis. In this study, the authors present an algorithm for quantifying stent apposition and neointimal coverage by automatically detecting lumen contours and stent struts in IV-OCT images. METHODS: The algorithm utilizes OCT intensity images and

[Use of virtual reality in forensic psychiatry. A new paradigm?].

BACKGROUND: For more than 20 years virtual realities (VR) have been successfully used in the assessment and treatment of psychiatric disorders. The most important advantages of VR are the high ecological validity of virtual environments, the entire controllability of virtual stimuli in the virtual environment and the capability to induce the sensation of being in the virtual environment instead of the physical environment. VRs provide the opportunity to face the user with stimuli and situations which are not available or too risky in reality. Despite these advantages VR-based applications have

Visual sedimentation.

We introduce Visual Sedimentation, a novel design metaphor for visualizing data streams directly inspired by the physical process of sedimentation. Visualizing data streams (e. g., Tweets, RSS, Emails) is challenging as incoming data arrive at unpredictable rates and have to remain readable. For data streams, clearly expressing chronological order while avoiding clutter, and keeping aging data visible, are important. The metaphor is drawn from the real-world sedimentation processes: objects fall due to gravity, and aggregate into strata over time. Inspired by this metaphor, data is visually de

Virtual reality exposure treatment of agoraphobia: a comparison of computer automatic virtual environment and head-mounted display.

In this study the effects of virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) were investigated in patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia. The level of presence in VRET was compared between using either a head-mounted display (HMD) or a computer automatic virtual environment (CAVE). Results indicate that there was no relationship between the level of experienced presence and treatment outcome. Analyses indicate that VRET in general was more effective than no treatment. No differences in effectiveness were found between VRET using an HMD or CAVE.

Virtual reality exposure therapy in anxiety disorders: a systematic review of process-and-outcome studies.

In recent years, virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) has become an interesting alternative for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Research has focused on the efficacy of VRET in treating anxiety disorders: phobias, panic disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. In this systematic review, strict methodological criteria are used to give an overview of the controlled trials regarding the efficacy of VRET in patients with anxiety disorders. Furthermore, research into process variables such as the therapeutic alliance and cognitions and enhancement of therapy effects through cognitive enha

The New Jersey Institute of Technology Robot-Assisted Virtual Rehabilitation (NJIT-RAVR) system for children with cerebral palsy: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: We hypothesize that the integration of virtual reality (VR) with robot assisted rehabilitation could be successful if applied to children with hemiparetic CP. The combined benefits of increased attention provided by VR and the larger training stimulus afforded by adaptive robotics may increase the beneficial effects of these two approaches synergistically. This paper will describe the NJIT-RAVR system, which combines adaptive robotics with complex VR simulations for the rehabilitation of upper extremity impairments and function in children with CP and examine the feasibility of thi

Modified implanted drop foot stimulator system with graphical user interface for customised stimulation pulse-width profiles.

A modified implanted drop foot stimulator that allows cyclic modulation of the stimulation pulse-width during gait has been developed. Stimulation was on two channels of a four-channel 12 polar cuff electrode. The stimulator allowed modulation of stimulation pulse-width, between 0 and 255 micros, on both channels throughout the swing and stance phases of gait. Stimulation was applied between 17 and 40 Hz. The clinician can specify an infinite range of stimulation profiles on a desktop computer, using a user-friendly LabVIEW interface. The desktop program generated a stimulation profile table o

Virtual reality system in conjunction with neurorobotics and neuroprosthetics for rehabilitation of motor disorders.

Cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) and spinal cord injuries (SCI) are the most common causes of paralysis and paresis with reported prevalence of 12,000 cases per million and 800 cases per million, respectively. Disabilities that follow CVA (hemiplegia) or SCI (paraplegia, tetraplegia) severely impair motor functions (e.g., standing, walking, reaching and grasping) and prevent the affected individuals from healthy-like, full and autonomous participation in daily activities. Our research focuses on the development of a new virtual reality (VR) system combined with wearable neurorobotics (NR), moto

Computer-assisted single- or double-cut oblique osteotomies for the correction of lower limb deformities.

Corrective osteotomy interventions on lower extremities are widely accepted procedures for restoring axial alignment of lower limbs. However, some studies reveal failure rates of up to 70 per cent in a 10 year time frame, which indicates that the success of corrective osteotomies depends on multiple factors. Based on a comprehensive review of error sources among conventional correction osteotomy interventions, a novel approach was developed in order to reduce these error sources among all clinical working steps (deformity determination, planning, and intra-operative realization). The article d

Giving new life to an outdated spectrofluorometer for static and time-resolved UCNP optical characterization.

The obsolescence of proprietary, closed-source software and electronics renders high-quality scientific equipment inoperable, particularly affecting low-income countries where replacement costs hinder research and student training. Institutions often prioritize renewing equipment that addresses the needs of a larger user base, thereby limiting the emergence of research lines, such as up-conversion studies, that require more specific equipment. Refurbishing older equipment with open-source solutions offers a cost-effective way to extend its lifespan while introducing new functionalities. In thi

Cloud and IoT based smart agent-driven simulation of human gait for detecting muscles disorder.

Motion disorders affect a significant portion of the global population. While some symptoms can be managed with medications, these treatments often impact all muscles uniformly, not just the affected ones, leading to potential side effects including involuntary movements, confusion, and decreased short-term memory. Currently, there is no dedicated application for differentiating healthy muscles from abnormal ones. Existing analysis applications, designed for other purposes, often lack essential software engineering features such as a user-friendly interface, infrastructure independence, usabil

Using Human-Centered Design and Development to Create a Digital Sick Day Medication Guidance Application for People With Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, or Chronic Kidney Disease: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease are associated with high morbidity and costs of care. Medications can reduce long-term complications but may contribute to complications such as hypoglycemia and acute kidney injury during acute illnesses. Sick day medication guidance (SDMG) could help prevent these adverse events, but evidence for effective strategies to deliver this guidance is lacking. OBJECTIVE: We iteratively designed and developed a digital prototype user interface (UI) to deliver SDMG for patient self-management. The application, called "Preventin

Intelligent Virtual Dental Implant Placement via 3D Segmentation Strategy.

Virtual dental implant placement in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a prerequisite for digital implant surgery, carrying clinical significance. However, manual placement is a complex process that should meet clinical essential requirements of restoration orientation, bone adaptation, and anatomical safety. This complexity presents challenges in balancing multiple considerations comprehensively and automating the entire workflow efficiently. This study aims to achieve intelligent virtual dental implant placement through a 3-dimensional (3D) segmentation strategy. Focusing on the missing
