The prevalence of vitiligo and poliosis in patients with uveitis.

Vitiligo is a disease of cutaneous pigment cells. Recently we reported that one third of patients with vitiligo had destructive lesions in the retinal pigment epithelium and/or the choroid which were visible by ophthalmologic examination. To determine whether abnormalities of the pigment system of the eye and skin are in fact associated, we examined for vitiligo the skin and hair of 107 patients with active uveitis. Thirty-four patients had an infectious or a known cause for their uveitis and none of these had vitiligo. In contrast, six of seventy-three patients (8%) with idiopathic uveitis ha…

Some remarks on the immunopathology of toxoplasmic uveitis.

Data obtained from prospective studies of congenital toxoplasmosis and from serological examination of patients with uveitis suggest that ocular toxoplasmosis is mostly congenital in origin. It is mainly related to the immunological clearance of residual cysts persisting after a subclinical congenital toxoplasmosis.

Effectiveness and Safety of Baricitinib for Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis-Associated Uveitis or Chronic Anterior Antinuclear Antibody-Positive Uveitis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of baricitinib in pediatric patients with active juvenile idiopathic arthritis-associated uveitis (JIA-U) or chronic anterior antinuclear antibody-positive uveitis, who had an inadequate response to methotrexate (MTX) or biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs). METHODS: JUVE-BRIGHT was an open-label, active-controlled phase-3 multicenter trial that used a novel design, including 1:1 randomization to an active reference arm. The primary efficacy endpoint was the proportion of responders at week 24 (W24), defined according to the S…

Evidence and Consensus Based Imaging Guidelines in Behçet Disease Uveitis. Multimodal Imaging in Uveitis (MUV) Taskforce Report 18.

PURPOSE: To develop imaging and consensus-based guidelines for the application of multimodal imaging in the clinical diagnosis, monitoring, and detection of complications in Behçet disease (BD) uveitis. DESIGN: International expert consensus agreement using the nominal group technique guided by systematic literature review. PARTICIPANTS: International uveitis and retina experts participating in the Multimodal Imaging in Uveitis (MUV) taskforce. METHODS: A committee of experts reviewed the published literature on imaging in BD uveitis, along with representative multimodal imaging datasets of…

Bayesian trial of adalimumab versus secukinumab for children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis associated uveitis or chronic anterior uveitis.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)-associated uveitis and chronic anterior uveitis in children may result in permanent sight loss. Currently, the only licensed and approved treatment for JIA-uveitis is adalimumab. However, even in patients where adalimumab may be initially effective, therapeutic response may subside for example, due to neutralising drug antibodies. Further treatment options are necessary to prevent sight loss in children with uveitis. Interleukin 17 is elevated in uveitis. Inhibition of interleukin 17 ameliorates inflammation in mouse models of uveitis. Secukinuma…

Diagnostic efficacy of elevated serum angiotensin-converting enzyme and lymphopenia between presumed sarcoid uveitis and presumed tubercular uveitis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of elevated serum angiotensin-converting enzyme (sACE) and lymphopenia in presumed sarcoid and tubercular uveitis. METHODS: A single-centre retrospective study was conducted on a cohort of 755 adult patients with uveitis between January 2019 and June 2020. Demographic, clinical and laboratory data were retrieved from our hospital database. Measurements of serum angiotensin-converting enzyme (sACE) and lymphocyte counts were analysed. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 41 ± 13 years. Presumed sarcoid uveitis was diagnosed in 50 (7%) patients…
