The nose, as an organ initiating reflexes affecting itself and the rest of the body, and as a target organ of control, is highly complex. Its innervation includes parasympathetic, sympathetic, sensory/afferent, and somatic motor nerves, which combine in a variety of morphologic pathways. The vasculature of the nose contains capacitance vessels such as sinusoids and distensible venules, as well as arteriovenous anastomoses, arterioles, capillaries, and venules. The secretory tissue of the nose includes epithelial cells, submucosal glands, and relatively large anterior or lateral serous glands; …

BACKGROUND: Behcet's disease is a chronic inflammatory disorder usually characterized by the triad of oral ulcers, genital ulcers, and uveitis. Central to the pathogenesis of Behcet's disease is an autoimmune vasculitis. Neurological involvement, so called "Neuro-Behcet's disease", occurs in 10-20% of patients, usually from a meningoencephalitis or venous thrombosis.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 46-year-old patient with Neuro-Behcet's disease who presented with central neurogenic hyperventilation as a result of brainstem involvement from venulitis.
CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our kno

Angiodysplasia of the colon is a vascular lesion which involves the arterioles, venules and small venous vessels; usually it is a lesion of the aged and presents with rectorrhagia, melena or chronic anemia due to chronic blood loss. We present two cases of angiodysplasia of the colon in two female patients in the eighth decade of their lives, treated in the Servicio de Cirugía del Hospital Universitario Virgen Macarena de Sevilla. We emphasize the value of the angiographic study for the diagnosis of this lesion, and also the usefulness of isotopic study with labeled erythrocytes for the locali…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The retinal microvasculature reflects cumulative small-vessel damage from hypertension and other vascular processes. No study has prospectively examined retinal findings in relation to the incidence of clinical lacunar stroke in comparison with other ischemic stroke subtypes.
METHODS: In 10 496 adults initially free of stroke, we related retinal findings imaged during 1993 to 1995 with the incidence of hospitalized ischemic strokes through 2005.
RESULTS: During a median of 11.2 years of follow-up, 338 incident ischemic strokes occurred (66 lacunar, 192 nonlacunar thro

Histologic changes of regression have been recognized in many malignant tumors, although they have not been documented in thyroid carcinoma. We analyze here the histologic features of 2 cases of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma, one of the diffuse sclerosing variant and another multicentric of the follicular variant, that suggest partial regression. The histologic and clinical features of the 2 thyroid microcarcinomas were compared with the features of regression reported in other tumors. Hematoxylin and eosin stains were examined in each case. In addition, immunoperoxidase stains for thyroglo

Acute inflammations main characteristics are exudation of fluid and plasma proteins and emigration of leukocytes, predominantly neutrophils into inflamed tissue. We have previously demonstrated that leukocyte extravasation can be directly monitored in human patients in vivo after tunnel cataract operation, but at the same time we noticed that only certain manipulations trigger also leukocyte extravasation. To define the type of surgical manipulations triggering leukocyte extravasation, we tested a set of surgical manipulations affecting distinct anatomical components of the conjunctiva. This s

In order to assess the prevalence of venocclusive disease in autopsied recipients of bone marrow transplantation, we reviewed coded liver histology from 204 consecutive autopsied recipients transplanted for leukemia (142), other malignancies (5), or aplastic anemia (57). Twenty-seven patients with leukemia, 2 with carcinoma, and 3 with aplasia had venocclusive disease and survived 2-86 days post-transplant. Early lesions showed subintimal edema and hemorrhage within small central venules and centrilobular congestion with hepatocyte degeneration. Later lesions showed subtotal to complete fibrou…

Several studies have investigated the pathogenesis of aortic wall abnormalities such as aortic dissection or aneurysm; however, the comprehensive pathological in situ event involved in the development of the disease is not understood well. The vasa vasorum form a network of capillaries or venules around the adventitia and outer media, which play an important role in the aortic wall structure and function. Impairment of their function may induce tissue hypoxia, impede the transfer of cellular nutrients, and cause aortic medial degeneration, which is considered the major predisposing factor to t…

Intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) is a rare and benign smooth muscle tumor that arises from intrauterine venules or the myometrium. We herein describe a 49-year-old woman with a history of myomectomy who developed abdominal pain. An intravascular mass with extension to the right atrium was detected in the inferior vena cava. The mass was surgically resected in a single stage under cardiopulmonary bypass. IVL features were indicated by subsequent histopathology. Postoperatively, the patient was diagnosed with massive pericardial effusion and treated with a pericardial window. At 3 months' outpat…

The authors describe 3 cases with successful fingertip replantations using supermicrosurgical arteriole (terminal branch of digital artery) anastomoses, arteriole graft obtained from the same fingertip defect, reverse arteriole flow to subdermal venule, and delayed venular drainage for venous congestion. Among these 16 consecutive distal phalangeal replantations, 7 fingers showed postoperative venous congestion (43.8% of the total fingers) and 5 were reoperated on with delayed venous drainage under digital block. All the reoperated fingers were successfully drained by additional single or doub

Pathogenesis and treatment of hypersensitivity angiitis and Henoch-Schönlein purpura were summarized. Both diseases were included in the category of "leukocytoclastic vasculitis". Hypersensitivity angiitis was frequently associated with drug or infectious exposure and the involvement of venules and capillaries. Many patients with this disease have detectable autoantibodies to neutrophil cytoplasmic antigens (ANCA) typically reactive with myeloperoxidase. Henoch-Schönlein purpura was characterized by vasculitis in multiple organs such as the skin, joints, gastrointestinal tract and kidneys. Hen…

Significant decrease in the tone of the rectal mucosa venules was to be seen at the climax of acute Proteus and Klebsiella enterocolitis, as evidenced by examinations with the aid of rheorectograph and an analyzer of intracavitary motor activity, general blood supply to the intestinal segment under study being not compromised. The tone of the rectal mucous membrane arterioles is raised at the climax of acute dysentery caused by a Flexner type of organism in erosive and haemorrhagic proctosigmoiditis. With the clinical recovery being set in, the blood supply to this area fails to return to norm…
