Vertical and horizontal bone augmentation with the intraoral autogenous J-graft.

This article describes a technique to predictably reconstruct both horizontal and vertical bony defects with one graft, the autogenous J-graft. Bone harvested from the ramus is contoured in three dimensions resulting in both a horizontal and a vertical component. When there is inadequate soft tissue due to the increase in bone volume at time of augmentation, the bone graft is combined with a pedicle palatal connective tissue graft. This provides both a source of blood supply and soft tissue to the grafted site. There are several advantages to the J-graft technique; a single procedure can recon

Shape-dependent disassembly of polygonal microparticles in two dimensions.

Understanding how particle shape governs the assembly and relaxation of colloidal clusters is critical for designing reconfigurable materials. Here, we experimentally investigate the assembly and disassembly dynamics of shape-anisotropic colloidal microparticles confined to two dimensions using a rotating magnetic field. Plate-like, non-magnetic regular polygonal particles (3-6 vertices), each inscribed within a circle of fixed radius, are fabricated via photolithography and dispersed in a magnetic nanoparticle medium, where an in-plane rotating field induces tunable long-range attractions tha

Open-source three-dimensional IoT anemometer for indoor air quality monitoring.

Ventilation in an enclosed space can significantly influence people's comfort, health, and safety. Poor ventilation can generate temperatures dangerous to health or obstruct the dispersion of environmental pollutants, such as toxic gases or pollution. Measuring indoor environmental conditions can thus help improve the quality of the environment and protect people's health and comfort. This work proposes the design of an open-source anemometer to measure wind speed and direction in three dimensions. The purpose of this anemometer is to monitor wind conditions in enclosed spaces and environmenta

Clinical Insights Into Addressing Constricted Maxillary Arch in Angle's Class II Malocclusion: A Case Report.

The transverse dimension, often overlooked in orthodontics, plays a crucial role in malocclusions, affecting not only occlusion in that dimension but also sagittal and vertical dimensions. Posterior crossbites, indicative of transverse maxillary issues, are commonly addressed through palatal expansion. This case report explores the clinical insights into addressing a constricted maxillary arch in Angle's Class II malocclusion using a nickel-titanium (NiTi) expander. The NiTi expander provides constant and optimal expansion forces by incorporating a temperature-activated NiTi alloy. A 16-year-o…

Traditional face-bow transfer versus three-dimensional virtual reconstruction in orthognathic surgery.

Face-bow transfer is an essential step in articulator-based orthognathic surgery planning. However, it can be a source of inaccuracy. Virtual computer-based planning avoids this error through the use of direct patient-related three-dimensional imaging data. The aim of this prospective observational study was to determine the error of face-bow transfer three-dimensionally and correlate it to the different types of malocclusion. Orthognathic surgery performed on 38 patients (10 male, 28 female; mean (standard deviation) age 24.7 (6.9) years) was planned twice: first articulator-based with plaste

Optimizing the Chin and Jawline Appearance: Does Surgery or Injection Make Sense?

The chin is a crucial landmark and mandates careful consideration for facial appearance. Optimal chin appearance requires evaluation and treatment in three dimensions: anteroposterior, transverse, and vertical planes. The optimization of chin deficiencies requires understanding of bony anatomy as well as the relationship of the adjacent facial structures including the lip, teeth, and nose. The practitioner should be familiar with techniques in injection, placement of alloplastic implants, as well bony genioplasty.

Macro- and microstructural assessment of alveolar bone in adults with different vertical facial patterns using cone beam computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: Vertical facial growth patterns play a crucial role in craniofacial morphology and have significant implications for diagnosis, treatment planning, and long-term stability in orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery. This study sought to comprehensively study the macro- and microstructure of alveolar bone in different vertical facial patterns using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: A cross-sectional study involved 120 CBCT scans divided equally into normodivergent and hyperdivergent vertical facial patterns of both genders. Alveolar bone analyses were conducted for bo

Maxillary sinuses and midface in patients with cleidocranial dysostosis.

The cleidocranial dysplasia is general skeletal disorder with an autosomal dominant inheritance. It is manifested by many craniofacial abnormalities, of which the maxillary hypoplasia is the most evident. The aim of the study was to use CBCT to evaluate the volume of the maxillary sinuses and the dimensions of maxillae in patients with CCD and compare them with healthy individuals. Files of four children with cleidocranial dysplasia were investigated. Volume of every maxillary sinus as well as two dimensional measurements of distances between particular points of interest located on surface of

Stabilization splint treatment on complete denture--two reported cases.

The pre-prosthetic treatments of two female patients with osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joints were presented in this paper. In the first case report, an 83-year-old patient wore complete dentures (CDs) for 30 years. The second patient (71 years of age) wore a three-year-old upper CD and a lower removable partial denture with a two-unit fixed dental prosthesis. Pain was successfully eliminated by the stabilization splint on the upper CD. Magnetic resonance imaging was used to confirm the diagnosis and clinical follow-up of the splint treatment.

Dentinogenesis imperfecta--clinical presentation and management.

UNLABELLED: Dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI) is a hereditary condition which affects the development of dentine in both the primary and permanent dentitions. Three types of DI have been described in the literature. The presentation of DI is variable, depending on the type and severity of the disease. Early intervention in the treatment of a patient with DI is extremely important both for psycho-social and for functional reasons. This paper attempts to describe the clinical presentation and management of DI, and explores its association with certain medical conditions. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Recogn
