BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The incidence of intralabyrinthine schwannomas is increasing, and a growing attention is given to the detrimental effects on hearing function. On the contrary, the vestibular profile of intralabyrinthine vestibular schwannomas (VSs) is still not well understood. We aimed to investigate and report the observed relationships between the intralabyrinthine location of the schwannomas and objective and subjective vestibular profile of the patients.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of 20 consecutive individuals with sporadic intralabyrinthine schwannomas and grouped acc

Repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) results in a myriad of symptoms, including vestibular impairment. The mechanisms underlying vestibular dysfunction in rmTBI patients remain poorly understood. Concomitantly, acute hypogonadism occurs following TBI and can persist chronically in many patients. Using a repetitive mild closed-head animal model of TBI, the role of testosterone on vestibular function was tested. Male Long Evans Hooded rats were randomly divided into sham or rmTBI groups. Significant vestibular deficits were observed both acutely and chronically in the rmTBI groups. Sys

Vestibular and auditory functions after glycerol intake were assessed correlated in twenty-eight patients diagnosed as menieric according to AAOO criteria. All patients had unilateral Ménière's disease confirmed by monolateral hypoacusia and labyrinthine hypofunction. Hearing thresholds were tested by tone-audiometry, according to the standard glycerol test. Variation in vestibular response were assessed comparing the VOR during the rotatory sinusoidal test as well as the caloric test, before glycerol intake and 2 hours after drug administration. Slow phase angolar velocity, directional prepon

BACKGROUND: In patients with a vestibular schwannoma, some studies have reported that useful hearing preserved initially after surgery deteriorates gradually in the long term. Studies with more patients are needed to clarify the maintenance rate of postoperative hearing function and to identify prognostic of hearing function.
METHOD: Ninety-one patients (mean age, 39.5 years; mean tumor size, 18.9 mm) with preserved useful hearing immediately after surgery were retrospectively analyzed. The useful hearing was defined as the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) cl

Here we review the clinical value of a video-oculography test for clinical evaluation of vestibular otolith function. This test is known as the video ocular counter roll (vOCR) and is based on measurement of torsional vestibulo-ocular reflex with a lateral head tilt. The vOCR test consists of a simple maneuver during which the head and torso are tilted en bloc by the examiner. The pattern of vOCR deficit among patients highlights its clinical value in identifying the stage of vestibular loss and recovery. The quick application of vOCR allows examination of otolith-ocular function and assessmen

The accuracy in detecting angular displacements of the head and the neck was investigated in 14 patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) and 16 age matched normal controls by the technique of vestibular and cervical "remembered" saccades. It was found that although the remembered saccades in PD patients were multiple-step and showed low initial saccadic gain, the final eye position of the eyes matched the rotational stimulus as accurately as in normals. This indicates that perception of head/neck rotation is normal in PD which is inconsistent with views that vestibulo/proprioceptive d

Vestibular impairments have not been routinely identified in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), because of the confounding effects of deficits in other neural systems. In this study, 35 patients with MS were evaluated by means of a systematic alteration of the sensory environment (dynamic posturography) in order to identify those patients who became unstable when vestibular inputs were needed to maintain stance. Subjects were assigned to either a high-function (HF) or a low-function (LF) group on the basis of a functional status assessment score obtained prior to the posturography test. Fo

Vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) responding to acceleration stimuli is originated from the vestibular apparatuses and thus widely used as an in vivo indicator of the vestibular function. We have developed a vestibular function testing (VFT) system that allows to evaluate VOR response with improved efficiency. The previously required surgical procedure has been avoided by using a newly designed animal-immobility setup. The efficacy of our VFT system was demonstrated on the mice with vestibular abnormalities caused by either genetic mutations (Lhfpl5-/- or Cdh23-/-) or applied vestibulotoxicant (3,

The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between the results of the objective assessment of the vestibular organ in patients with peripheral vertigo with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and thyroid hormone metabolism. Twenty eight women with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and chronic vertigo were enrolled in the study. Patients underwent audiological assessment of hearing, Dix-Hallpike test, videonystagmography with caloric test, head impulse test (HIT) and cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs). Levels of thyroid hormones and anti-thyroid antibodies were determined. Relationship

OBJECTIVE: To separate vestibular neuritis (VN) from posteriorcirculation stroke (PCS) using quantitative tests of canal and otolith function.
METHODS: Video Head-Impulse tests (vHIT) were used to assess all three semicircular canal pairs; vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain and saccade metrics were examined. Cervical and ocular-Vestibular-Evoked Myogenic Potentials (c- and oVEMP) and Subjective Visual Horizontal (SVH) were used to assess otolith function.
RESULTS: For controls (n = 40), PCS (n = 22), and VN (n = 22), mean horizontal-canal VOR-gains were 0.96 ± 0.1, 0.85 ± 0.3 and 0.40 ± 0.2,

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Skull vibration-induced nystagmus (SVIN) is a robust sign of vestibular asymmetry, yet its relationship with tests of impulsive canal function, short-latency otolithic reflexes, and sustained visuo-vestibular processing remains incompletely defined. To describe four clinical-physiological cases in which SVIN was dominant or disproportionate relative to the canal, otolithic-reflex, and sustained-domain profiles, and to propose a temporal-domain interpretation of this physiological non-congruence.
METHODS: Four patients with persistent disequilibrium, episodic vertigo, or

We have had 30 patients with Harada's disease at our clinic from 1980 to 1993 and their neurotological findings were retrospectively reviewed. There were 12 males and 18 females, whose ages ranged from 15-years to 67-years. Preceding symptoms such as headache or common cold were observed in 50% of the patients. Pleocytosis of the cerebrospinal fluid was found in 89% of the patients. Subjective cochlear and/or vestibular symptoms were noted in 60% of the patients. In 43 of the 50 ears, sensorineural hearing loss (< 40 dB) was observed. In 77% of the patients, vestibular function tests gave abno…
