Over the past 10 years a variety of acquired external auditory canal pathologies have been treated at the University of Virginia. Surgical intervention has been required in 16 patients (18 ears). The most common diagnosis in this group was canal stenosis. Split-thickness skin grafts have been used for epithelial coverage. The relationship between the timing and outcomes of the Washington Redskins' football games and the frequency of admissions to hospital emergency rooms in northern Virginia is investigated. An OLS time series analysis is conducted, controlling for days of the week, months, years and special holidays for 1988-1989. The results indicate that the frequency of admissions of women victims of gun shots, stabbings, assaults, falls, lacerations and being struck by objects increases when the team wins. This study presents the operative results of surgeons with experience in both the translabyrinthine and suboccipital approaches to acoustic tumor removal for the purpose of resolving some of the controversy among centers favoring one approach over the other. The subjects were 171 patients with acoustic tumors who were treated at Virginia Mason Clinic from 1975 to 1986. The translabyrinthine approach was used in 64% of cases, the suboccipital approach in 35%, and the middle fossa approach in 1%. The increasing use of surgery for sex reassignment in the treatment of transsexualism is described. The author's early experience over a twenty-year period with the Gender Identity teams at The Johns Hopkins University and The University of Virginia is summarized. The records of all 380 adult patients receiving cardiac pacemakers at West Virginia University in the 15-year period ending January 1, 1977, were reviewed. The five-year survival rate was 58 per cent and the 10 year, 38 per cent with a median survival of 74 months. Mucormycosis is an acute fungal disease with high mortality exhibiting craniofacial, pulmonary, cutaneous, gastrointestinal and disseminated forms. Cerebro-rhino-orbital (CRO) mucormycosis is the type that most frequently involves the structures of the head and neck. Twenty patients with malignant salivary gland tumors of the hard and soft palate were seen at the University of Virginia Hospital from 1956 through 1975.
