Measurement of the validity of a preschool vision screening program.

OBJECTIVES: The validity (sensitivity and specificity) of a preschool vision screening program was measured over a 3-year period to determine how well strabismus and significant refractive errors could be detected. METHODS: Public health nurses were trained to administer tests of visual acuity, stereoacuity, and ocular alignment. Failure on any test, visual acuity of 6/9 or less, stereoacuity of less than 100 seconds of arc, or an apparent misalignment of the eyes resulted in referral to an eye care practitioner. An age-matched control was also referred. Analysis of practitioner reports used

Disparity-driven vs blur-driven models of accommodation and convergence in binocular vision and intermittent strabismus.

PURPOSE: To propose an alternative and practical model to conceptualize clinical patterns of concomitant intermittent strabismus, heterophoria, and convergence and accommodation anomalies. METHODS: Despite identical ratios, there can be a disparity- or blur-biased "style" in three hypothetical scenarios: normal; high ratio of accommodative convergence to accommodation (AC/A) and low ratio of convergence accommodation to convergence (CA/C); low AC/A and high CA/C. We calculated disparity bias indices (DBI) to reflect these biases and provide early objective data from small illustrative clinica

Binocular function in school children with reading difficulties.

INTRODUCTION: Prior findings suggest that poor readers tend to have poor binocular vision skills, but data on the binocular abilities of children with poor reading skills are lacking. Our aim was to characterize distance and near horizontal heterophoria, distance and near horizontal fusional vergence ranges, accommodative convergence/accommodation (AC/A) ratio, near point of convergence, and stereopsis in poor-reading school-age children without dyslexia selected from a non-clinical population. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study on 87 poor readers and 32 control children (all 8-13

Inhibiting the transient choroidal thickening response using the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor l-NAME prevents the ameliorative effects of visual experience on ocular growth in two different visual paradigms.

It is generally accepted that the increase in choroidal thickness in response to myopic defocus in chicks acts to move the retina towards the image plane. It may also constitute part of the signal cascade in the visual regulation of eye growth. To test this, we used the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor l-NAME to inhibit the defocus induced choroidal thickening under two different visual conditions, and looked at the effects on ocular growth rate. Exp. 1: Deprivation/Vision: chicks were monocularly deprived of form vision with translucent diffusers from day 6 to day 9. In the middle of each day

Tertiary Syphilis-Induced Ocular Syphilis Complicated by Retinal Detachment.

Tertiary syphilis can cause eye diseases such as ocular syphilis and retinal detachment. Herein, we present a case of a 28-year-old male with no reported past medical history. He presented to the emergency department with complaints of pain, blurriness, and vision loss in his left eye, leading to a fall during a recent ophthalmologist visit. Diagnosis typically relies on detailed clinical examination, lumbar punctures, and serological testing to diagnose and manage the patient's condition. The results of these tests led to the diagnosis of tertiary syphilis-induced ocular syphilis complicated

Topiramate-Induced Aqueous Misdirection in a Nanophthalmic Eye.

A 51-year-old female was referred to the emergency department with a one-day history of severe right eye pain, blurry vision, and conjunctival injection. A review of past ocular history was notable for nanophthalmos and narrow angles with patent peripheral iridotomies. Anterior segment exam findings were consistent with aqueous misdirection and a review of medications indicated recent topiramate initiation for headaches and depression. The acute attack was initially controlled with medical management and plans for future surgical intervention were made. Although ocular screening prior to initi

Intraocular lens optics and aberrations.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review outlines concepts in intraocular lens (IOL) optics and aberrations important both for current IOLs and for new IOLs in development. RECENT FINDINGS: Optical aberrations make a significant impact on the laboratory and clinical performance of IOLs, especially under mesopic and low-contrast conditions. Minimizing or correcting these aberrations can potentially improve visual function. Strategic management of aberrations can have clinical utility for extended depth of focus and presbyopia correction. SUMMARY: All IOLs affect ocular aberrations in some manner. It is

The dark and bright sides of retinal G protein-coupled receptor (RGR) in vision and disease.

The visual chromophore 11-cis-retinal (11cRAL) is essential to vertebrate phototransduction and therefore, must be regenerated so vision can be sustained. 11cRAL regeneration mediated by the classical visual cycle is insufficient under photopic conditions. Expressed in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and Müller glia, the retinal G protein-coupled receptor (RGR) can act as an alternative visual cycle photoisomerase, photogenerating 11cRAL in bright light conditions. While named a G protein-coupled receptor, RGR has no known coupled G protein. In the photoisomerase process, RGR bound all-tr
