Optic neuritis after bee sting.

The purpose of this report is to document an unusual case of fully recovered vision after optic neuritis caused by bee sting. A 46-year-old … d to 20/20 and P100 latency in pattern VEP was also normalized. Furthermore, visual field and color vision tests revealed no remaining abnormalities. This case suggests that early corticosteroid treatment is effective in optic neuritis caused by bee sting.

Transient tunnel vision and altered consciousness after a single dose of ibuprofen.

Although neurological/ophthalmologic side effects including headache, vertigo, somnolence, paresthesia, optic neuritis, and optic neuropathy are listed as side effects in the medication guidelines for ibuprofen, transient tunnel vision and altered consciousness after a single dose of ibuprofen have not been reported. The patient was a 48-year-old man who experienced sudden-onset tunnel vision for a few seconds, followed by an altered state of consciousness for 20 minutes, during which he was communicating with his boss in an altered manner, 15 minutes after having taken 200 mg of ibuprofen. A congruous superior quadrantanopsia following a junctional scotoma induced by asperogillosis.

A 69-year old man presented to us with decreased vision in his right eye and a relative afferent pupillary defect. Under the presumption that he was suffering from retrobulbar optic neuritis or ischemic optic neuropathy, visual field tests were performed, revealing the presence of a junctional scotoma. Imaging studies revealed tumorous lesions extending from the sphenoid sinus at the right superior orbital fissure, with erosion of the right medial orbital wall and optic canal. Right optic nerve decompression was performed via an endoscopic sphenoidectomy, and histopathologic examination confir

[The influence of ocular dominance on monovision--the interaction between binocular visual functions and the state of dominant eye's correction].

PURPOSE: To examine the interaction between binocular visual functions and the correction of the dominant eye, i.e., for far vs. near vision in monovision. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Ten healthy subjects without any ophthalmological disease were examined. After cycloplegia, the eyes of the subjects were corrected by soft contact lenses (difference in lens power between the lenses: 2.5 D) with an artificial pupil(diameter: 3.0 mm). Visual acuity at various distances, contrast sensitivity, and near stereoacuity were measured while the dominant eye determined by the hole-in-card test (sighting domina

Diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN) is an inflammatory disorder of the retina thought to be caused by a motile worm. It initially presents with unilateral recurring crops of gray-white retinal lesions and mild to severe inflammation. Over a period of months, diffuse retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) changes, arteriolar attenuation, and optic atrophy will develop. In approximately 25% of cases, a worm is visualized during the eye examination. Laser treatment to kill the worm is the only reliable way to halt progression of this disease. METHODS: The following case repor

Amblyopia: Detection and Treatment.

Amblyopia is the leading cause of monocular vision loss in children. Early recognition and treatment are important to prevent vision loss. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends vision screening for all children at least once between three and five years of age to detect the presence of amblyopia or its risk factors. The American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend routine, age-appropriate red reflex testing, examination for signs of strabismus, and vision chart testing. Photoscreening may be a useful adjunct to tr

Distance and near vision changes after intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor injection in eyes with center-involving diabetic macular edema.

PURPOSE: To elucidate distance and near vision changes after intravitreal injections in center-involving diabetic macular edema (CIDME) in phakic and pseudophakic groups. METHODS: A retrospective study was done on 148 eyes (72 phakic and 76 pseudophakic) with center-involving DME. All eyes were treated with intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injection. All patients underwent distance best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) testing, near BCVA testing, dilated fundus examination, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) at baseline and follow-up visits. Eyes that could not im

Cone function in children with a history of preterm birth.

Color vision was examined by psychophysical tests and photopic color full-field electroretinography (ERG) in formerly preterm children, and compared with those of full-term children. In a prospective case-control study, 25 patients with a history of preterm birth 7-14 years of age were divided into three groups: group I, laser-treated retinopathy of prematurity [ROP] (n = 7); group II, spontaneously regressed ROP (n = 8); group III, no ROP (n = 10). Age-matched full-term born children comprised the control group (n = 8). Color vision was assessed by Fansworth D15 and Lanthony desaturated D15 t

Sectorial pigmentary retinopathy associated with head trauma.

Retinal lesions resembling retinitis pigmentosa were observed in a 39-year-old white male patient with a history of head trauma, reduced night vision, and periodic perception of light flashes. Perimetric testing revealed contracted superior-temporal fields. The results of numerous other tests of visual function, however, failed to support the tentative funduscopic diagnosis of sector retinitis pigmentosa.

Central and Peripheral Attention in Virtual Reality: Test of Visual Efficiency for Concussion Detection.

INTRODUCTION: In complex and fast-paced environments, central and peripheral vision are imperative to respond to changes in the environment and ensure personal safety. Measures of vision have become key interests in research exploring biomarkers of concussion. The purpose of this project was to describe differences in performance between individuals with and without an acute concussion on a novel test of peripheral vision delivered through a virtual reality head-mounted device (HMD). METHODS: This was a matched case-control study, including 13 participants with and 26 participants without a c

Field Expansion for Acquired Monocular Vision Using a Multiplexing Prism.

SIGNIFICANCE: Acquired monocular vision (AMV) is a common visual field loss. Patients report mobility difficulties in walking due to collisions with objects or other pedestrians on the blind side. PURPOSE: The visual field of people with AMV extends more than 90° temporally on the side of the seeing eye but is restricted to approximately 55° nasally. We developed a novel field expansion device using a multiplexing prism (MxP) that superimposes the see-through and shifted views for true field expansion without apical scotoma. We present various designs of the device that enable customized fitt

Visualizing Visual Adaptation.

Many techniques have been developed to visualize how an image would appear to an individual with a different visual sensitivity: e.g., because of optical or age differences, or a color deficiency or disease. This protocol describes a technique for incorporating sensory adaptation into the simulations. The protocol is illustrated with the example of color vision, but is generally applicable to any form of visual adaptation. The protocol uses a simple model of human color vision based on standard and plausible assumptions about the retinal and cortical mechanisms encoding color and how these adj

Visual signs and symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common disorder of middle-aged and elderly people, in which there is degeneration of the extra-pyramidal motor system. In some patients, the disease is associated with a range of visual signs and symptoms, including defects in visual acuity, colour vision, the blink reflex, pupil reactivity, saccadic and smooth pursuit movements and visual evoked potentials. In addition, there may be psychophysical changes, disturbances of complex visual functions such as visuospatial orientation and facial recognition, and chronic visual hallucinations. Some of the treatments ass

The Lancaster red-green test before and after occlusion in the evaluation of incomitant strabismus.

BACKGROUND: Patients with incomitant strabismus can often fuse in a limited area of gaze. Prolongation of neurologically learned fusional vergence tone ("vergence adaptation") in and near this area can result in misleading measurements with standard clinical measures of strabismus. Monocular occlusion for at least 30 minutes eliminates most of the effect of vergence adaptation. The Lancaster red-green test provides an elegant and convenient map of incomitant strabismus. We investigated the efficacy of the Lancaster red-green test before and after monocular occlusion for the investigation of in
