Prevalence of Radiographic Signs of Osteoarthritis in Lusitano Purebred Horses.

Radiographic prevalence and correlation of radiographic findings has not been performed in Lusitano Purebred horses. The aim of this study was to (1) evaluate the prevalence of primary osteoarthritis radiographic findings in Lusitano Purebred horses; (2) to assess correlations between radiographic findings in different joints of the same limb and different limbs; and (3) elucidate the effect of age in the radiographic findings. A radiographic protocol of the stifle, tarsi, fetlocks and distal limbs was done in 98 Lusitanos and the classification of the radiographs was performed using a 0-4 sca

Domestication Phenotype Linked to Vocal Behavior in Marmoset Monkeys.

The domestication syndrome refers to a set of traits that are the by-products of artificial selection for increased tolerance toward humans [1-3]. One hypothesis is that some species, like humans and bonobos, "self-domesticated" and have been under selection for that same suite of domesticated phenotypes [4-8]. However, the evidence for this has been largely circumstantial. Here, we provide evidence that, in marmoset monkeys, the size of a domestication phenotype-a white facial fur patch-is linked to their degree of affiliative vocal responding. During development, the amount of parental vocal

Behavioural responses to video and live presentations of females reveal a dissociation between performance and motivational aspects of birdsong.

Understanding the regulation of social behavioural expression requires insight into motivational and performance aspects. While a number of studies have independently assessed these aspects of social behaviours, few have examined how they relate to each other. By comparing behavioural variation in response to live or video presentations of conspecific females, we analysed how variation in the motivation to produce courtship song covaries with variation in performance aspects of courtship song in male zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). In agreement with previous reports, we observed that male

Japanese macaque phonatory physiology.

Although the call repertoire and its communicative function are relatively well explored in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), little empirical data are available on the physics and the physiology of this species' vocal production mechanism. Here, a 6 year old female Japanese macaque was trained to phonate under an operant conditioning paradigm. The resulting 'coo' calls and spontaneously uttered 'growl' and 'chirp' calls were recorded with sound pressure level (SPL) calibrated microphones and electroglottography (EGG), a non-invasive method for assessing the dynamics of phonation. A total of

Anatomy and Functional Morphology of the Mysticete Rorqual Whale Larynx: Phonation Positions of the U-Fold.

Many Mysticetes (baleen whales) are acoustically active marine mammals. This is epitomized by rorquals, and specifically male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) whose complex songs comprise a wide range of vocalizations. The sound production mechanism of odontocetes (toothed whales, including dolphins and porpoises) is well described, in contrast to that of mysticetes whose vocalization mechanism remains a subject of active scientific investigation. Anatomical observations and acoustic signal processing have led to divergent hypotheses under the framework of a production-based approach.

Vessel noise cuts down communication space for vocalizing fish and marine mammals.

Anthropogenic noise across the world's oceans threatens the ability of vocalizing marine species to communicate. Some species vocalize at key life stages or whilst foraging, and disruption to the acoustic habitat at these times could lead to adverse consequences at the population level. To investigate the risk of these impacts, we investigated the effect of vessel noise on the communication space of the Bryde's whale Balaenoptera edeni, an endangered species which vocalizes at low frequencies, and bigeye Pempheris adspersa, a nocturnal fish species which uses contact calls to maintain group co

Copying hierarchical leaders' voices? Acoustic plasticity in female Japanese macaques.

It has been historically claimed that call production in nonhuman primates has been shaped by genetic factors, although, recently socially-guided plasticity and cortical control during vocal exchanges have been observed. In humans, context-dependent vocal convergence with relatives, friends or leaders' voices can be found. Comparative studies with monkeys and apes presenting tolerant social organizations have demonstrated that affiliative bonding is the determining factor of convergence. We tested whether vocal copying could also exist in a primate species with a despotic social organization.

Finding motifs in birdsong data in the presence of acoustic noise and temporal jitter.

Here we present a novel approach to quickly and reliably find long (200 ms - 2 s) stereotyped sequences of sounds ("motifs") in acoustic recordings of birdsong. Robust and time-efficient identification of such sequences is a crucial first step in many studies ranging from development to neuronal basis of motor behavior. Accurately identifying motifs is usually hindered by the presence of animal-intrinsic variability in execution and tempo, and by extrinsic acoustic noise (e.g., movement artifacts, ambient noise). The algorithm we describe in this report has been optimized to work in bird speci

Acoustic communication in crocodilians: information encoding and species specificity of juvenile calls.

In the Crocodylia order, all species are known for their ability to produce sounds in several communication contexts. Though recent experimental studies have brought evidence of the important biological role of young crocodilian calls, especially at hatching time, the juvenile vocal repertoire still needs to be clarified in order to describe thoroughly the crocodilian acoustic communication channel. The goal of this study is to investigate the acoustic features (structure and information coding) in the contact call of juveniles from three different species (Nile crocodile Crocodylus niloticus,

Regulation of learned vocal behavior by an auditory motor cortical nucleus in juvenile zebra finches.

In the process of song learning, songbirds such as the zebra finch shape their initial soft and poorly formed vocalizations (subsong) first into variable plastic songs with a discernable recurring motif and then into highly stereotyped adult songs. A premotor brain area critically involved in plastic and adult song production is the cortical nucleus HVC. One of HVC's primary afferents, the nucleus interface of the nidopallium (NIf), provides a significant source of auditory input to HVC. However, the premotor involvement of NIf has not been extensively studied yet. Here we report that brief an

Time's arrow flies like a bird: two paradoxes for avian circadian biology.

Biological timekeeping in birds is a fundamental feature of avian physiology, behavior and ecology. The physiological basis for avian circadian rhythmicity has pointed to a multi-oscillator system of mutually coupled pacemakers in the pineal gland, eyes and hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). In passerines, the role of the pineal gland and its hormone melatonin is particularly important. More recent molecular biological studies have pointed to a highly conserved mechanism involving rhythmic transcription and translation of "clock genes". However, studies attempting to reconcile the phys

Temperature dependence of cicada songs (Homoptera, Cicadoidea).

The songs of male Portuguese cicadas Tettigetta argentata, T. josei and Tympanistalna gastrica were recorded at five to seven temperatures within the range 24-38.5 degrees C. To investigate the temperature dependence of the neuromuscular apparatus involved in song production, different temporal elements of the calling songs were measured. We report a strong temperature dependence for the syllable and the echeme rates in T. josei and Ty. gastrica. This suggests that in these species the neuromuscular structures involved in the timbal cycle and in generating the echeme succession of the song are

The metabolic cost of birdsong production.

The metabolic cost of birdsong production has not been studied in detail but is of importance in our understanding of how selective pressures shape song behavior. We measured rates of oxygen consumption during song in three songbird species, zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), Waterslager canaries (Serinus canaria) and European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris). These species sing songs with different acoustic and temporal characteristics: short stereotyped song (zebra finch), long song with high temporal complexity (canary) and long song with high acoustic, but low temporal, complexity (starling)

Toxicity trial of canine posterior cricoarytenoid intramuscular vincristine injections.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: In animal studies, intramuscular vincristine injections have been shown to block reinnervation of the denervated target muscle. This application could be used selectively to influence recovery patterns following injury of recurrent laryngeal nerves (RLNs). However, vincristine is currently Food and Drug Administration approved only for intravenous use. A formal toxicity trial of intramuscular injections was performed. STUDY DESIGN: Animal study. METHODS: Sixteen female canines underwent direct laryngoscopy with injection of moderate- (0.4 mg, n = 8) or high-dose (0.6 m

Twin vocal folds as a novel evolutionary adaptation for vocal communications in lemurs.

Primates have varied vocal repertoires to communicate with conspecifics and sometimes other species. The larynx has a central role in vocal source generation, where a pair of vocal folds vibrates to modify the air flow. Here, we show that Madagascan lemurs have a unique additional pair of folds in the vestibular region, parallel to the vocal folds. The additional fold has a rigid body of a vocal muscle branch and it is covered by a stratified squamous epithelium, equal to those of the vocal fold. Such anatomical features support the hypothesis that it also vibrates in a manner like the vibrati

Muscular and neuronal control of voice production - forgotten findings, current concepts, and new developments.

Voice production has been an area of interest in science since ancient times, and although advancing research has improved our understanding of the anatomy and function of the larynx, there is still little general consensus on these two topics. This review aims to outline the main developments in this field and highlight the areas where further research is needed. The most important hypotheses are presented and discussed highlighting the four main lines of research in the anatomy of the human larynx and their most important findings: (1) the arrangement of the muscle fibers of the thyroaryteno

Laryngeal paralysis in dogs: an update on recent knowledge.

Laryngeal paralysis is the effect of an inability to abduct the arytenoid cartilages during inspiration, resulting in respiratory signs consistent with partial airway obstruction. The aetiology of the disease can be congenital (hereditary laryngeal paralysis or congenital polyneuropathy), or acquired (trauma, neoplasia, polyneuropathy, endocrinopathy). The most common form of acquired laryngeal paralysis (LP) is typically seen in old, large breed dogs and is a clinical manifestation of a generalised peripheral polyneuropathy recently referred to as geriatric onset laryngeal paralysis polyneuro

The role of ultrasound in the assessment of laryngeal paralysis in the dog.

Forty dogs with clinical signs suggestive of upper respiratory tract disease underwent echolaryngography and laryngoscopy. Laryngoscopy was used as the definitive technique to diagnose laryngeal paralysis. The ultrasound investigation accurately indicated the presence of the paralysis and confirmed the uni- or bilateral nature of the disorder. Findings indicative of laryngeal paralysis included asymmetry or absence of motion of the cuneiform processes (30/30), abnormal arytenoid movement (16/30), paradoxical movement (9/30), caudal displacement of the larynx (2/30) and laryngeal collapse (1/30

A review of laryngeal paralysis in dogs.

Laryngeal paralysis is now a frequently recognized disorder, particularly in older dogs of certain breeds such as the Labrador retriever, Afghan Hound and Irish Setter. The presenting signs may consist of exercise intolerance, inspiratory stridor, inspiratory dyspnoea, gagging, coughing and dysphonia. Two forms of laryngeal paralysis exist, hereditary and acquired. The hereditary form is found in young dogs and transmitted by an autosomal dominant gene. At present little is known about the aetiology of acquired laryngeal paralysis and therefore treatment is directed at relieving the laryngeal
