Co-hydrothermal carbonization of microalgae and digested sewage sludge: Assessing the impact of mixing ratios on the composition of primary and secondary char.

The role of microalgae cultivation in wastewater treatment and reclamation has been studied extensively, as has the potential utility of the resulting algal biomass. Most methods for processing such biomass generate solid residues that must be properly managed to comply with current sustainable resource utilization requirements. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) can be used to process both individual wet feedstocks and mixed feedstocks (i.e., co-HTC). Here, we investigate co-HTC using microalgae and digested sewage sludge as feedstocks. The objectives were to (i) study the material's partitioni

Fixed-bed biofilter for polluted surface water treatment using chitosan impregnated-coconut husk biochar.

Pelletizing biochar enables its use as a biofilter medium for polluted canal water treatment. Coconut husk biochar pellets and their modification with chitosan (CHC) were compared with conventional activated carbon pellets and gravel. The biofilter columns with these media were operated with a hydraulic loading rate of 0.1 m3/m2∙h. CHC showed the highest potential to reduce phosphate and nitrogen, via the adsorption process in the first week of filtration and later enhanced by biodegradation, to achieve removal efficiencies of 61.70 and 54.37% for these two key nutrients, respectively, over fi

Exploring the influence of air resistance on the hollow fiber membrane process in water treatment based on ultrasonic phased array technology.

In water treatment with membrane filtration process, a lot of factors such as process design, operation, and fouling affect membrane flux. But it is often neglected the flux decline which attribute to air resistance. In this study, it has been observed that air resistance caused by air trapped initially at startup as well as the release of air from the permeating liquid has an adverse effect on the membrane filtration and backwash process in water treatment. In the study, a new in-situ monitoring method, ultrasonic phased array (UPA), was used to investigate the distribution of released air in

Study and evaluation of the characteristics of saline wastewater (brine) produced by desalination and industrial plants.

Desalination and industrial plants all around the world generate large amounts of saline wastewater (brine). The discharge of brine from facilities poses a severe environmental threat, while at the same time, the opportunity to recover resources is being lost as discharged brine is rich in valuable metals that could be recovered as salts/minerals. To this aim, this study presents and analyzes for the first time the characteristics of different brine effluents (from industries such as desalination, oil and gas production, petrochemical, aquaculture, pharmaceutical, textile) to prevent environme

Electro-oxidation to convert dissolved organic nitrogen and soluble non-reactive phosphorus to more readily removable and recoverable forms.

Conventional wastewater treatment processes cannot effectively remove dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and soluble non-reactive phosphorus (sNRP), which can pose regulatory compliance challenges for total nitrogen and total phosphorus discharges. Moreover, DON and sNRP are not easily recoverable for beneficial reuse as part of the waste to resource paradigm. Conversion of DON and sNRP to more readily removable dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and soluble reactive phosphorus (sRP), respectively, will help meet stringent nutrient limits and facilitate nutrient recovery. In this study, electro-

Optimal cleaning strategy to alleviate fouling in membrane distillation process to treat anaerobic digestate.

This paper deals with the membrane fouling issue in the Direct Contact Membrane Distillation (DCMD) process treating a wasted sludge from an anaerobic digestion process. The main objective is to define an optimal cleaning strategy to alleviate fouling. Using a lab scale DCMD process, a cleaning strategy based on DI water flushing followed by 0.2% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and 3% citric acid (C6H8O7) cleaning was tested with different cleaning frequencies and various chemical cleaning durations at different cross-flow velocities. To avoid severe fouling, the optimal cross-flow velocity was fo

Pretreatment using Opuntia cochenillifera followed by household slow sand filters: technological alternatives for supplying isolated communities.

Household slow sand filter (HSSF) performance in continuous and intermittent flows was evaluated when influent water was treated with a natural coagulant extracted from Opuntia cochenillifera. The water under study, used as influent, had a turbidity of 111 ± 17.3 NTU. When clarifying the water with O. cochenillifera, the best condition obtained was 30  mg L-1 in natural pH (without correction), generating clarified water with turbidity satisfactory to filters operation (7.83 ± 2.32 NTU). The results indicated a better performance of continuous flow HSSF in turbidity removal (79.2% ± 8.39%) and

Characterization of disinfection byproduct formation and associated changes to dissolved organic matter during solar photolysis of free available chlorine.

Solar irradiation of chlorine-containing waters enhances inactivation of chlorine-resistant pathogens (e.g., Cryptosporidium oocysts), through in situ formation of ozone, hydroxyl radical, and other reactive species during photolysis of free available chlorine (FAC) at UVB-UVA wavelengths of solar light (290-400 nm). However, corresponding effects on regulated disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation and associated dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties remain unclear. In this work, when compared to dark chlorination, sunlight-driven FAC photolysis over a range of conditions was found to yiel

Role of membrane fouling substances on the rejection of N-nitrosamines by reverse osmosis.

The impact of fouling substances on the rejection of four N-nitrosamines by a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane was evaluated by characterizing individual organic fractions in a secondary wastewater effluent and deploying a novel high-performance liquid chromatography-photochemical reaction-chemiluminescence (HPLC-PR-CL) analytical technique. The HPLC-PR-CL analytical technique allowed for a systematic examination of the correlation between the fouling level and the permeation of N-nitrosamines in the secondary wastewater effluent and synthetic wastewaters through an RO membrane. Membrane fouling

Effects of chromium on activated sludge and on the performance of wastewater treatment plants: A review.

Chromium is a heavy metal of commercial importance, thus significant amounts are released in wastewaters. Chromium in wastewaters and in the aquatic environment is primarily encountered in oxidation stages +3 (Cr((III))) and +6 (Cr((VI))). Recent publications suggest that Cr((VI)) compounds are more toxic than Cr((III)) ones, while Cr((III)) has been identified as trace element, at least for complex organisms. With respect to chromium species mobility, Cr((VI)) can cross cellular membranes, which then may be oxidized to Cr((III)) and react with intracellular biomolecules. Clear conclusions can

Direct seawater desalination by ion concentration polarization.

A shortage of fresh water is one of the acute challenges facing the world today. An energy-efficient approach to converting sea water into fresh water could be of substantial benefit, but current desalination methods require high power consumption and operating costs or large-scale infrastructures, which make them difficult to implement in resource-limited settings or in disaster scenarios. Here, we report a process for converting sea water (salinity approximately 500 mM or approximately 30,000 mg l(-1)) to fresh water (salinity <10 mM or <600 mg l(-1)) in which a continuous stream of sea wate

Passive sampling for PFAS in a drinking water treatment plant: Potential utility, challenges, and pathways forward.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) need to be effectively monitored in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) to assess treatment performance and manage potential health risks. Grab sampling provides only snapshot concentrations, whereas passive sampling offers time-weighted average concentrations (CTWA). Polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS) are widely used for polar contaminants, including PFAS, yet their reliability for estimating CTWA in individual DWTP processes remains unclear. RESULTS: PFAS passive sampling performance was evaluated in controlled labo

Methylene blue removal from water using chaya-derived biochar: Effect of metabolite extraction on adsorption.

This study evaluated biochars derived from Cnidoscolus aconitifolius (chaya) leaf residues for methylene blue (MB) removal from water. Two materials were produced under identical thermal conditions from untreated biomass (CCP-A) and post-extraction biomass (CCP-B), allowing direct assessment of the effect of metabolite extraction. Characterization by SEM/EDS, XRD, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, and N2 adsorption-desorption showed that extraction altered surface chemistry and textural properties, increasing oxygen-containing functionalities and BET surface area from 1.92 to 6.10 m2 g-1 and decr

Barriers and facilitators to the utilisation of point-of-use water treatment systems during and immediately following flood-related disasters: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 6 seeks to ensure universal access to safe drinking water by 2030, but vast inequities in access exist, especially among vulnerable communities including limited resource, rural, disaster-affected areas. Flood disasters, exacerbated by the climate crisis, hinder the ability of individuals and families to meet essential drinking water needs and increase their susceptibility to waterborne illnesses. Point-of-use (POU) water treatment is an effective solution for water-insecure populations during and immediately following flood em

Elevated Mammalian Cell Cytotoxicity of Chlorinated Drinking Waters in the Presence of CuO.

It has been demonstrated previously that cupric oxide (CuO) can enhance the formation of one- to two-carbon-atom disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during water chlorination. Effects of CuO on the Chinese hamster ovary cell cytotoxicity of chlorinated water and the underlying mechanisms were investigated in this study. Results showed that 0.1 g L-1 CuO elevated the cytotoxicity of chlorinated waters by 20% and 120% at initial bromide concentrations of 15 and 415 μg L-1, respectively. Increasing the CuO dose increased the cytotoxicity induced by both known and unknown DBP fractions, and a more pron

Data-driven machine learning improves prediction of sulfonamide antibiotic adsorption by biochar in aqueous phase.

Sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) have attracted much attention due to their environmental risks to aquatic ecosystems. Biochars (BCs), as excellent adsorbent materials, have been used to remove SAs from aqueous phases. To achieve effective evaluation of adsorption, machine learning (ML) strategies are increasingly being developed. However, no applicable data-driven ML models have been studied to predict the adsorption of SAs by BCs in water. Therefore, this study employed an ML approach based on Wasserstein generative adversarial network (WGAN) data augmentation to predict the adsorption of SAs o

Effect of iron particle formation on the transformation of Al in drinking water distribution system: implications for Al deposition control.

Aluminum (Al), a common residual matter in drinking water distribution system (DWDS), can undergo transformation, accumulation and re-release, posing challenges for maintaining stability of distributed water quality. However, the interactions between various Al species and iron oxides (FeOx) mainly generated from pipe corrosion remain poorly characterized. This study investigated the transformation behaviors of Al under different FeOx formation processes and water chemistry conditions. Results showed that in-situ formed FeOx significantly enhanced the transformation of inorganic Al into stable
