MUSEUM SPECIMENS OF WESTERN DIAMOND-BACKED RATTLESNAKES (VIPERIDAE: CROTALUS ATROX) REVEAL TRENDS IN BODY SIZE, DIET, AND ENDOPARASITES OVER THE LAST 75 YEARS.

Climate projections for the Southwestern United States predict increases in temperature, drought intensity and frequency, and wildfire intensity and frequency. Such climatic change is expected to impact communities and species of the region, including Crotalus atrox (western diamond-backed rattlesnake) and its helminth communities. We hypothesized that C. atrox in New Mexico has experienced measurable changes in body size, diet composition, and helminth communities over the past century. We examined specimens of C. atrox from 3 time periods: 1947-1960 (1950s, n = 34), 1980-1990 (1980s, n = 53)

Neurometabolomic impacts of wood smoke and protective benefits of anti-aging therapeutics in aged female C57BL/6J mice.

BACKGROUND: Wildland fires in the United States have increased in frequency and scale over the past 30 years exposing millions of people to hazardous air pollutants. Among others, aging individuals are particularly vulnerable to the effects of wildfire smoke. In this study, we assessed the neurobiological impacts of wood smoke (WS) on aged mice and the potential of anti-aging therapeutics to mitigate these impacts. METHODS: Female C57BL/6 J mice, aged 18 months, were divided into 10 groups and exposed to either filtered air (FA; 5 groups) or biomass derived WS (5 groups) for 4 h/day, every ot

Shared buddies: ectomycorrhizal fungal communities in pinus and quercus and their potential relevance for mixed-forest restoration.

Pines and oaks are ecologically and economically important taxa that co-occur in several forest and woodland systems across the northern hemisphere and that have been severely affected by diverse disturbances (e.g., wildfire, drought). Despite their relevance, the value of co-planting pines, that regenerate from seeds, and oaks, which are able to resprout, to improve forest restoration following disturbance has only recently been appreciated. An important consideration with this strategy is whether pines and oaks share root-associated fungal symbionts (ectomycorrhizas -EcM-, arbuscular mycorrh

Acute toxicology of components of vegetation smoke.

Only in recent times, systematic attention has been paid to the occupational health of forest firefighters and workers who manage prescribed fire. Two parts of the effort to learn the impact on worker health are medical observation of those workers, and study of occupational hygiene. It is also necessary to learn what components of smoke are most likely to affect firefighters, and to learn something of the manner in which those substances might compromise health; this review is a step toward that end. The number of possible products of vegetation combustion is almost limitless, and every fuel

PM2.5 in Carlsbad Caverns National Park: Composition, sources, and visibility impacts.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park in southeastern New Mexico is adjacent to the Permian Basin, one of the most productive oil and gas regions in the country. The 2019 Carlsbad Caverns Air Quality Study (CarCavAQS) was designed to examine the influence of regional sources, including urban emissions, oil and gas development, wildfires, and soil dust on air quality in the park. Field measurements of aerosols, trace gases, and deposition were conducted from 25 July through 5 September 2019. Here, we focus on observations of fine particles and key trace gas precursors to understand the important contr…

Inhalation Injury: Update on Pathogenesis, Emerging Hazards, and Management.

Inhalation injury, the pulmonary and systemic damage caused by a single or brief exposure to toxic gases, vapors, aerosols, or particulate matter, encompasses exposure categories ranging from structural-fire smoke and industrial chemical releases to wildfire smoke, earthquake-generated dust, and novel consumer products. Relevant exposures differ markedly in timescale, and four entities are distinguished: acute inhalation injury; subacute toxic pneumonitis, which follows repeated exposure peaks or sustained exposure over weeks to months; chronic inhalational disease; and population-level enviro

Putative roles of vitamin D in modulating immune response and immunopathology associated with COVID-19.

The first incidence of COVID-19 was reported in the Wuhan city of Hubei province in China in late December 2019. Because of failure in timely closing of borders of the affected region, COVID-19 spread across like a wildfire through air travel initiating a pandemic. It is a serious lower respiratory track viral infection caused by highly contagious, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). Coronavirus including COVID-19 causing SARS-CoV-2 causes zoonotic diseases and thought to be originated from bats. Since its first incidence, the virus has spread all across the world, ca

Impacts of extreme air pollution events on pregnancy outcomes: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Extreme air pollution events are characterised by high pollution concentrations and a wide impact range, which may pose a serious threat to the health of pregnant women and fetuses. Air pollutants can affect fetal development through the placental barrier, increasing the risk of premature birth, low birth weight, gestational hypertension and miscarriage. Although some studies have investigated the impact of extreme air pollution events on pregnancy outcomes, there is no systematic and comprehensive synthesis of the evidence regarding the impact of these extreme events. OBJECTIVE:

Seasonal extreme temperatures and short-term fine particulate matter increases pediatric respiratory healthcare encounters in a sparsely populated region of the intermountain western United States.

BACKGROUND: Western Montana, USA, experiences complex air pollution patterns with predominant exposure sources from summer wildfire smoke and winter wood smoke. In addition, climate change related temperatures events are becoming more extreme and expected to contribute to increases in hospital admissions for a range of health outcomes. Evaluating while accounting for these exposures (air pollution and temperature) that often occur simultaneously and may act synergistically on health is becoming more important. METHODS: We explored short-term exposure to air pollution on children's respiratory

Computational Investigation and Histopathological Validation of Interaction Between Stent Graft and Aorta in Retrograde Type A Dissection After TEVAR in Canine Models.

PURPOSE: Retrograde type A dissection (RTAD) after thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) has been a major drawback of endovascular treatment. To our knowledge, no studies have simulated and validated aortic injuries caused by stent grafts (SGs) in animal models. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate and quantify the SG-aorta interaction through computational simulations and to investigate the underlying mechanism through histopathological examinations. METHODS: Two custom-made Fabulous® (DiNovA Meditech, Hang Zhou, China) SGs were implanted in 2 canine aortas with a 5-mm diff

Design of Cr-Based Molecular Electrocatalyst Systems for the CO2 Reduction Reaction.

ConspectusHuman influence on the climate system was recently summarized by the sixth Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Report, which noted that global surface temperatures have increased more rapidly in the last 50 years than in any other 50-year period in the last 2000 years. Elevated global surface temperatures have had detrimental impacts, including more frequent and intense extreme weather patterns like flooding, wildfires, and droughts. In order to limit greenhouse gas emissions, various climate change policies, like emissions trading schemes and carbon taxes, ha…

Livestock exposure to bushfires and meat, offal and carcase quality: Is there an association?

The occurrence of bushfires (wildfires) is increasing with climate change in many areas of the world. In Australia, the 2019/20 bushfire season involved a particularly severe and widespread fire emergency (the 'Black Summer' bushfires). Understanding of how exposure to bushfires affects specific disease processes in livestock is limited. This research investigated spatiotemporal relationships between exposure to bushfires and observations of pneumonia and pleurisy in slaughtered sheep, and meat quality in slaughtered cattle. Two related cross-sectional studies were undertaken using historical …

Health effects of drought: a systematic review of the evidence.

Introduction. Climate change projections indicate that droughts will become more intense in the 21 century in some areas of the world. The El Niño Southern Oscillation is associated with drought in some countries, and forecasts can provide advance warning of the increased risk of adverse climate conditions. The most recent available data from EMDAT estimates that over 50 million people globally were affected by drought in 2011. Documentation of the health effects of drought is difficult, given the complexity in assigning a beginning/end and because effects tend to accumulate over time. Most he

Life cycle emissions associated with vault storage of wood cleared for fire management in the Western United States.

BACKGROUND: Climate change, fire suppression, and human encroachment contribute to increasingly intense forest fires in the Western United States, releasing hundreds of millions of metric tons (MMT) CO2/year. Proactive fire-risk reduction treatments coordinated by the US Forest Service (USFS) typically include thinning and burning (or in situ decay) of thinned products and may require thinning on ~ 28 million hectares of public and private land over the next decade. Assuming thinning of only small (~ 30 cm diameter) trees within 0.8 km of existing roads on slopes gentler than a 40% grade, this

Governance for planetary health equity-the Planetary Health Equity Hothouse project.

BACKGROUND: Planetary health equity (PHE) is defined here as equitable good health in a stable Earth system. PHE is arguably in crisis. Human-made climate change is damaging global populations through hotter temperatures, wildfires, and more severe and frequent storms, flooding, and landslides. A tsunami of health inequities will result from this, as pre-existing health conditions and inequities in living and working conditions ensure that socially disadvantaged groups and people in low-income and middle-income countries are disproportionately affected by climate change. Despite evidence of th…
