Impact of yoga asanas on flexion and relaxation phenomenon in women with chronic low back pain: Prophet model prospective study.

Chronic nonspecific low back pain (NSLBP) is a prevalent condition with socioeconomic and healthcare challenges. The flexion-relaxation phenomenon (FRP) evaluation is a valid clinical tool for low back pain (LBP) assessment. Yoga, a holistic mind-body practice, has been explored as an LBP intervention. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of yoga asanas on the FRP in women with NSLBP. The study included healthy and chronic NSLBP females who underwent an eight-session yoga asanas program, with the first session conducted in-clinic and the rest delivered with tele-approach. Outcome measures i…

The integration of yoga breathing techniques in cognitive behavioral therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder: A pragmatic randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: In trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), stabilization techniques are used before confrontation ones to increase stress/affect tolerance and thus effectiveness of CBT. This study investigated the effects of pranayama, meditative yoga breathing and breath holding techniques, as a complimentary stabilization technique in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS: Seventy-four PTSD-patients (84% female, 44.2 ± 13 years) were randomized to receive either pranayama at the beginning of each TF-CBT session or TF-CBT alone. The primary outcome was self…

Efficacy of Yoga Nidra on Depression, Anxiety, and Insomnia in Frontline COVID-19 Healthcare Workers: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge of mental health disturbances and the subsequent use of various mind-body therapies. Although evidence supports the benefits of yoga for mental health in a variety of disease states, information on its effects among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 epidemic is scarce. Therefore, this study evaluated and compared the efficacy of relaxation to music and yoga nidra on the mental health of frontline healthcare workers during the pandemic. This open-label randomized trial was conducted at a Level III COVID-19 care center. In the Relaxation-to-Music Gro…

Session of yoga, with and without slow (Ujjayi) breathing, reduces anxiety; no change on acute pain sensitivity and endogenous pain modulation.

OBJECTIVES: Yoga is an increasingly popular mode of exercise that boasts health promoting effects including pain relief. A single bout of exercise induces a reduced sensitivity to noxious heat, but the mechanism for this effect and whether it occurs after a single session of yoga is unexplored. The primary aim of this study was to test, using a post-test only between-subjects design, main and interactive effects of yoga and slow breathing on both sensitivity to heat pain and endogenous pain modulation processing in healthy young women DESIGN: Fifty-four women were block randomized into one of …

Effects of yoga on cardiometabolic risks and fetomaternal outcomes are associated with serum nitric oxide in gestational hypertension: a randomized control trial.

Gestational hypertension (GH) is associated with adverse cardiometabolic and pregnancy outcomes. Though yoga is known to be beneficial in pregnancy, the effects of yoga rendered for twenty weeks starting from 16th week of gestation in pregnant women having risk of GH on the incidence of hypertension, cardiometabolic risks and fetomaternal outcomes have not been studied. A randomized control trial was conducted on 234 pregnant women having risk of GH receiving standard antenatal care (Control group, n = 113), and receiving standard care + yoga (Study group, n = 121). Interventions were given fo…

A mindful yoga intervention for young women with major depressive disorder: Design and baseline sample characteristics of a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the gains made by current first-line interventions for major depressive disorder (MDD), modest rates of treatment response and high relapse indicate the need to augment existing interventions. Following theory and initial research indicating the promise of mindful yoga interventions (MYIs), this study examines mindful yoga as a treatment of MDD. METHODS/DESIGN: This randomized controlled trial uses a sample of young females (18-34 years) to examine the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of a 9-week manualized MYI added to treatment as usual (TAU) versus TAU alone. Primary out…

He was administered N&Y therapies for 10 days, along with conventional medicines. There was improved QoL and reduced dosage of insulin, along with reduction in body weight. These changes were sustained and improved further during the 60-day follow-up period. Although there was no improvement in the skin lesions, the improvement in QoL indicate a possible ro…

Relaxation in action: enhanced vagal modulation during Virabhadrasana (a standing yoga-asana) despite orthostatic demand suggests efficient regulation of effort.

INTRODUCTION: Classical Yoga-Āsana emphasizes not merely adoption of posture, but progressive reduction of unnecessary effort while maintaining stable engagement. However, the neurophysiological implications of effort modulation during yoga practice remain insufficiently understood. This study examined whether externally similar Yoga-Āsana performed with different effort organization may engage distinct autonomic regulatory organizations. METHODS: Eight experienced female yoga practitioner-teachers (median age: 58 years; median yoga experience: 19 years) participated in a within-subject explo…

Breath restored: yoga-based training lowers estimated lung age among individuals with opium dependence in a residential pre-post study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic opium use is associated with respiratory impairment and increased risk of respiratory-related mortality. We evaluated whether a structured, breath-centred yoga programme could improve pulmonary function in men with opium dependence. METHODS: In this single-arm pre-post feasibility study, 38 men were enrolled during a 1-month residential de-addiction programme and 30 completers (mean age 43.5 ± 12.2 years) underwent spirometry at baseline and after a month of twice-daily, instructor-led breath-based yoga (pranayama, asana-linked breathing, and relaxation). Primary outcomes …

Implementation of Virtual Yoga Shared Medical Appointment (VYSMA) Pilot at an Academic Medical Center Within a Mixed-Diagnosis Oncology Population.

Yoga is highly sought after by people seeking oncology care, endorsed by clinical practice guidelines, and supported by leading cancer organizations, yet barriers related to access, time, cost, and availability of quality providers remain. Shared medical appointments (SMA), a group healthcare model where patients with similar medical conditions participate in a collective appointment with healthcare providers, are associated with increased access to quality care, patient satisfaction, and clinician satisfaction. We piloted a unique insurance-covered virtual yoga SMA series to assess feasibilit…
