Auditory hypersensitivities are a common feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Physiological and anatomical studies have suggested that alligators have unique adaptations for spatial hearing. Sound localization cues are primarily generated by the filtering of sound waves by the head. We determined velocity discrimination thresholds and Weber fractions for sounds revolving around the listener at very high velocities. Sounds used were a broadband white noise and two harmonic sounds with fundamental frequencies of 330 Hz and 1760 Hz. Despite the use of hearing protection devices (HPDs) and engineering changes designed to improve workspaces, noise-induced hearing loss continues to be one of the most common and expensive disabilities in the US military. We investigated the effects of the antioxidant edaravone against acoustic trauma in guinea pigs. Edaravone (1.722 x 10(-2) M) was infused into the right ear by an osmotic pump, and the left ear was untreated for control.
