Do patients with different mental disorders show specific aspects of shame?

Shame is related to several mental disorders. We assume that facets of shame, namely bodily, cognitive and existential shame, may occur in typical patterns in mental and personality disorders. An excessive level of shame may lead to psychopathological symptoms. However, a lack of shame may also lead to distress, for instance as it may facilitate violation of social norms and thus may promote interpersonal problems. In this study we investigated facets of shame in females suffering from various mental disorders and personality disorders presumably associated with specific aspects of shame. Wome

Prevalence and Correlates of Caregiver-Reported Mental Health Conditions in Youth With Autism Spectrum Disorder in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Mental health conditions (MHCs) have substantial personal and economic costs for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); yet, a current population-based prevalence estimate is lacking. METHODS: This study included 42,283 caregivers of children (ages 3-17 years) from the 2016 population-based National Survey of Children's Health. Prevalence and correlates of caregiver-reported MHCs were estimated in children with ASD and compared with those in children with intellectual disability (ID), children with special health care needs (SHCN), and "all others" (no ASD, SHCN, or ID). Increased Risk of Smoking in Female Adolescents Who Had Childhood ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effects of childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity, on the development of smoking in male and female adolescents. METHOD: Twin difference methods were used to control for shared genetic and environmental confounders in three population-based, same-sex twin samples (N=3,762; 64% monozygotic). One cohort oversampled female adolescents with ADHD beginning in childhood. Regressions of childhood inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms were conducted to predict smoking outcomes by ag

Understanding Duchenne muscular dystrophy-associated brain pathology.

The most common neuromuscular disorder, Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), is caused by mutations in the DMD gene, resulting in a lack of dystrophin. In addition to severe and progressive muscle wasting, a subset of individuals with DMD experience, to largely varying extents, behavioural and cognitive deficits, including a lower IQ, and neurological comorbidities, such as autism spectrum disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Neuroimaging studies in individuals with DMD have identified widespread pathology, including structural, physiological and

Unraveling the causal pathways of maternal smoking and breastfeeding in the development of neuropsychiatric disorders: A Mendelian randomization perspective.

BACKGROUND: Maternal smoking around birth (MSAB) and early-life breastfeeding (BAB) represent critical factors that may exert enduring effects on neuropsychiatric health. Although previous research has examined these exposures separately, the combined impact of both on disorders such as ADHD, ASD, BD, MDD, ANX, and SCZ remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the causal relationships between MSAB and BAB and the risk of developing these neuropsychiatric disorders through Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. METHODS: A two-sample MR analysis was conducted to investigate the potential cau

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Psychiatric Comorbidity among Adolescent Earthquake Survivors: a Longitudinal Cohort Study.

Although posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is highly comorbid with psychiatric disorders, little longitudinal research has been conducted to determine the potentially causal links. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and comorbidity patterns of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and psychiatric symptoms among adolescents exposed to the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in China and to examine the bidirectional prospective associations between PTSD symptoms and other psychiatric symptoms. A sample of 1573 adolescent survivors (45.8% male; mean age at initial survey was 15.0 years, SD =

Psychiatric disorders in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most commonly diagnosed endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age, affecting approximately 5-8% of females in this group. It is characterized by hyperandrogenism, abnormal periods (rare periods or amenorrhea) and polycystic ovaries visualized through ultrasonography. The etiopathogenesis of polycystic ovary syndrome has not been elucidated in detail. There are numerous hypotheses on this subject which tend to complement one another. The most widely recognized hypothesis is that the development of PCOS is due to insulin resistance and hyperinsulinem

Homotypic and heterotypic continuity of symptoms of psychiatric disorders from age 4 to 10 years: a dynamic panel model.

BACKGROUND: Childhood psychiatric disorders and their symptoms evince both within-disorder (homotypic) and between-disorder (heterotypic) continuities. These continuities may be due to earlier symptoms causing later symptoms or, alternatively, that the same (unknown) causes (e.g., genetics) are operating across time. Applying a novel data analytic approach, we disentangle these two explanations. METHODS: Participants in a Norwegian community study were assessed biennially from 4 to 10 years of age with clinical interviews (n = 1,042). Prospective reciprocal relations between symptoms of disor

Internet addiction or excessive internet use.

BACKGROUND: Problematic Internet addiction or excessive Internet use is characterized by excessive or poorly controlled preoccupations, urges, or behaviors regarding computer use and Internet access that lead to impairment or distress. Currently, there is no recognition of internet addiction within the spectrum of addictive disorders and, therefore, no corresponding diagnosis. It has, however, been proposed for inclusion in the next version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM). OBJECTIVE: To review the literature on Internet addiction over the topics of diagnosis,

Children in classes for the severely emotionally handicapped.

This report will describe the clinical findings of a collaborative program to provide appropriate neuropsychiatric skills for 60 children ages 8 to 14 (grade 3 to 8) and their teachers, comprising the entire population of two self-contained units (eight classes) for the treatment of children designated as severely emotionally handicapped but not autistic. Of the 60 children, 36 (60%) were suffering from learning disabilities. Eighteen of these had neurological signs suggestive of organic defect of the central nervous system; the remaining 18 children with learning disabilities had specific or

Periodic limb movement disorder in children.

Periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) has been reported in children and is more prevalent in certain conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The International Restless Legs Syndrome Group has recently developed the criteria for diagnosis of PLMD in children. These criteria include both specific clinical features and polysomnographic findings. Exclusion of other causes especially sleep-disordered breathing is essential. Several medications including benzodiazepine and dopaminergic medication have been used in children, although these medications have not been adequately st

Neurobiological effects of the green tea constituent theanine and its potential role in the treatment of psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders.

Theanine (n-ethylglutamic acid), a non-proteinaceous amino acid component of green and black teas, has received growing attention in recent years due to its reported effects on the central nervous system. It readily crosses the blood-brain barrier where it exerts a variety of neurophysiological and pharmacological effects. Its most well-documented effect has been its apparent anxiolytic and calming effect due to its up-regulation of inhibitory neurotransmitters and possible modulation of serotonin and dopamine in selected areas. It has also recently been shown to increase levels of brain-deriv

The Gilles de la Tourette syndrome: a principal component factor analytic study of a large pedigree.

BACKGROUND: The genetics and phenotypes of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome are complicated. Once indicated to be inherited as a single major autosomal dominant condition, several areas of interest on many chromosomes and one gene have been identified for Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, but no results have been replicated. Factor analytic studies suggest that there are more than one Gilles de la Tourette syndrome phenotype and it is not a unitary condition. OBJECTIVE: To characterize Gilles de la Tourette syndrome phenotypes in a group of individuals who underwent a complete genome scan. METHO

Baseline neurocognitive scores in athletes with attention deficit-spectrum disorders and/or learning disability.

OBJECT: Up to 16% of children in the US between the ages of 3 and 17 years have either attention deficit-spectrum disorder or a learning disability (LD). Sports-related concussions among youth athletes represent a significant public health concern, and neurocognitive testing is a method to evaluate the severity of cognitive impairment and recovery after a sports-related concussion. The goal of this study was to assess baseline neurocognitive differences between athletes with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and/or LD versus those with neither disorder and to establish normative

Association of attentional network function with exon 5 variations of the CHRNA4 gene.

Mutational analyses in xenopus oocyte and mice models indicate that the positive effect of nicotine on attention may be modulated by genetic variations within exon 5 of the alpha4 subunit of the nicotinergic acetylcholine receptor gene CHRNA4. The potential relevance of exon 5 is further emphasized by two recent family-based association studies of nicotine dependence because subgroups of nicotine-dependent subjects are thought to 'self-medicate' attentional deficits with nicotine. We investigated a synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP): rs1044396, which has recently been associated

Eating disorders and emotional dysregulation are associated with insufficient weight loss after bariatric surgery: a 1-year observational follow-up study.

PURPOSE: Subjects with obesity, especially those seeking bariatric surgery, exhibit high rates of mental disorders and marked psychopathological traits. The primary objective of this prospective, non-interventional study was to investigate whether the presence of different psychiatric disorders, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptomatology and emotional dysregulation influenced weight loss at 1-year follow-up after surgery. METHODS: Subjects consecutively referred for pre-surgical evaluation at the Obesity Center of Pisa University Hospital were recruited. Psychiatric diagno

Understanding the countermovement to online presentations of psychiatric disorder that are perceived as "faked".

BACKGROUND: The self-presentation of psychiatric disorders on social media has generated a countermovement of sceptics who believe some are "faked" for reasons of self-promotion. This has been the focus of a Reddit forum called r/FakeDisorderCringe, an active community with almost 300,000 members. Given the influence of online discourse on public attitudes, understanding which diagnoses attract the most scepticism and what conversational themes surround these concerns is important in understanding lay controversies in mental health. METHODS: We used topic modelling using Latent Dirichlet allo
