PURPOSE: To report a complex cervicothoracic vascular-osseous phenotype detected on CTA and define its surgical and radiological relevance.
METHODS: Neck CTA of a 76-year-old woman was reviewed on multiplanar reconstructions for aortic arch branching, supraaortic courses, vertebral artery segments, collateral channels, cervical ribs, styloid processes, and pharyngeal carotid relationships.
RESULTS: CTA showed a common origin of the brachiocephalic trunk and left common carotid artery (colloquially termed bovine aortic arch), bilateral rudimentary cervical ribs, high-riding pretracheal brachi

OBJECTIVES: While considerable attention has been dedicated to quality improvement in spine surgery, few studies have evaluated progress in spinal cord injury (SCI) outcomes. This study aimed to assess whether morbidity and mortality trends have improved for acute cervical SCI patients in the last decade.
METHODS: The American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Programs database was retrospectively queried and outcomes for adult patients with acute cervical SCI were compared between two 5-year groups: 2013-2017 and 2018-2022. Patient demographics, comorbidities, type of injury, treatment moda

Techniques for rapid blood pressure modification without the side-effects associated with pharmaceuticals are urgently needed, especially for individuals with spinal cord injuries above thoracic level six (T6). Such cervical injuries lead to sympathetic nervous system dysfunction, negatively affecting cardiovascular health and quality of life. Our biofeedback protocol aimed to teach participants to self-modulate their blood pressure using yoga breathwork (kapalabhati and brahmari pranayama), virtual reality imagery, autogenics, and interoceptive attention. In this cohort study, we trained 13 p

Low-dose (< 2 h/day), acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH) elicits multiple forms of serotonin-dependent phrenic motor plasticity and is emerging as a promising therapeutic strategy to restore respiratory and non-respiratory motor function after spinal cord injury (SCI). In contrast, high-dose (> 8 h/day), chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) undermines some forms of serotonin-dependent phrenic motor plasticity and elicits pathology. CIH is a hallmark of sleep disordered breathing, which is highly prevalent in individuals with cervical SCI. Interestingly, AIH and CIH preconditioning differentially i

OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the incidence and risk factors for pneumonia after acute traumatic cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI).
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.Setting: Spinal injuries center in Japan.Participants: Of 184 individuals who were admitted within 2 weeks after acute traumatic cervical spinal injuries, 167 individuals who met the criteria were included in this study.Interventions: The occurrence of pneumonia, degree of dysphagia using the Dysphagia Severity Scale, patient age, history of smoking, presence of tracheostomy, vital capacity, level of injury, and the American Spinal

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and compare the cervical spinal canal (CSC) morphology among healthy people, cervical spondylosis myelopathy (CSM), and latent cervical spondylosis (LCS, people with cervical spine degeneration on medical imaging but without clinic symptoms).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed MRI data describing cervical spinal morphology in healthy persons, LSC patients and CSM patients. All cases underwent cervical MRI. In transverse image, anteroposterior diameter (A-P diameter), area of cervical spinal canal (CSC) and area of cervical spinal cord were measured. In sagittal image, A-

STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional observational study.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to compare the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and fractional anisotropy (FA) between patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) with and without high T2-weighted signal intensity, and to correlate each parameter with clinical assessments.
SETTING: CSM is a common cause of spinal cord dysfunction. The significance of T2 high signal intensity in the prognosis of CSM remains controversial.
METHODS: Diffusion tensor imaging was performed at the cervical spinal cord in 40 patients with CSM an
