Cryptococcus gattii has becoming more prevalent in temperate climate zones, during the past decades. We describe a C. gattii serotype B infection in an immunocompetent Italian patient with sclerosing cholangitis. A 26-year-old man was treated with piperacillin-tazobactam because of suspected cholangitis and a 77-year-old man was given ciprofloxacin because of an infected knee-prosthesis. In a retrospective study of 755 atients undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography from 1973 to 1977 at the Royal Free Hospital, 38 (5%) had a juxtapapillary diverticulum. Thirty-four patients with atrophic lesions of liver segments or lobes are described. The primary diagnoses included alcoholic liver disease, various forms of cirrhosis, hydatid disease, tumours and sclerosing cholangitis.
