The Cross-Species Immunity During Acute Babesia Co-Infection in Mice.

Babesiosis causes high morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised individuals. An earlier study suggested that lethal Babesia rodhaini infection in murine can be evaded by Babesia microti primary infection via activated macrophage-based immune response during the chronic stage of infection. However, whether the same immune dynamics occur during acute B. microti co-infection is not known. Hence, we used the mouse model to investigate the host immunity during simultaneous acute disease caused by two Babesia species of different pathogenicity. Results showed that B. microti primary infection at

Blood Mucorales PCR to track down Aspergillus and Mucorales co-infections in at-risk hematology patients: A case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Serum Mucorales PCR can precede the final diagnosis of invasive mucormycosis by several days or weeks and could therefore be useful as a non-invasive screening tool. METHODS: We assessed the performance of a commercial Mucorales PCR assay (MucorGenius®, PathoNostics, Maastricht, The Netherlands) on prospectively collected banked sera from hematology patients at risk for invasive mould infections. We evaluated if there is an underestimated incidence of missed Mucorales co-infections in patients with invasive aspergillosis (IA). We tested Mucorales PCR on the sera of all patients

[Bacterial and fungal co-infection: an association of criminals to look for].

INTRODUCTION: Mucorales are fungi that cause opportunistic infections. Its incidence increases. CASE REPORT: We report case of a 68-year-old woman with myelodysplastic syndrome responsible for prolonged neutropenia, hospitalized for pneumonia and sinusitis caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. But, despite antibiotic therapy, the patient's health deteriorated with discovery of systemic emboli on CT-scan and died. Sinus biopsies performed before her death diagnosed invasive fungal infection (Mucorales). CONCLUSION: Mucorales co-infections are rare but have already been described. Any invasive fun

Dysregulation of the IFN-I signaling pathway by Mycobacterium tuberculosis leads to exacerbation of HIV-1 infection of macrophages.

While tuberculosis (TB) is a risk factor in HIV-1-infected individuals, the mechanisms by which Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the agent … their antiviral functions, but our previous work showed that this is not the case in the context of coinfection with HIV-1. Here, we show that the IFN-I response signature in cmMTB-treated macrophages matches the one observed in the blood of active TB patients, and depends on the timing of incubation with cmMTB. This suggests that the timing of macrophage's e …

Protothecosis and Toxoplasma gondii co-infection in a dog from Nova Scotia, Canada.

A 2-year-old, neutered male mixed-breed dog from Nova Scotia, Canada was evaluated for panuveitis, polyuria, polydipsia, and hind limb ataxia. Toxoplasmosis was diagnosed ante-mortem based on markedly increased Toxoplasma gondii titers. The post-mortem examination confirmed systemic toxoplasmosis and demonstrated disseminated protothecosis. This article documents the first reported case of canine protothecosis in Atlantic Canada. Key clinical message: This case report demonstrates that protothecosis should be a clinical consideration for dogs in Canada. Co-infection with other organisms may oc

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis due to a zoonotic co-infection.

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a post-infectious, autoimmune, demyelinating neurological illness, usually attributed to infection with viruses. We describe a case of ADEM occurring in a child with Leptospira-Brucella co-infection. The 12-year-old girl developed a biphasic febrile illness with encephalopathy. On evaluation, she was found to have serological evidence of Brucella and Leptospira infections. Persistence of neurological symptoms after initiating treatment for the co-infection led us to do a magnetic resonance imaging scan of the brain which showed typical findings su

Randomized controlled trial of the relative efficacy of high-dose intravenous ceftriaxone and oral cefixime combined with doxycycline for the treatment of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae co-infection.

OBJECTIVES: Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) are the commonest bacterial causes of sexually transmitted infections in humans with high incidence of co-infection. Treatment with high doses of ceftriaxone (CRO) and cefixime (CFM) is strongly recommended due to the reduced drug susceptibility of NG. However, their safety and efficacy have not been confirmed. We compared the safety and efficacy of a single 1 g intravenous (IV) dose of ceftriaxone (CRO) plus doxycycline (DOX) versus a single 800 mg oral dose of cefixime (CFM) plus DOX for the treatment of NG-CT co-infection

Metagenomic analysis reveals mixed Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in a 18th century Hungarian midwife.

The Vác Mummy Collection comprises 265 well documented mummified individuals from the late 16th to the early 18th century that were discovered in 1994 inside a crypt in Vác, Hungary. This collection offers a unique opportunity to study the relationship between humans and pathogens in the pre-antibiotic era, as previous studies have shown a high proportion of tuberculosis (TB) infections among the individuals. In this study, we recovered ancient DNA with shotgun sequencing from a rib bone sample of a 18th century midwife. This individual is part of the collection and shows clear skeletal change

Epidemiology of Treponema pallidum and HIV co-infections in the Italian blood donor population: 2009-2021.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, co-infection from HIV and Treponema pallidum has become more common. Early detection of the co-infection allows us to implement therapeutic strategies to control the evolution of the disease and to contain its transmission in the general population. The donor population is the target of choice for the detection of early-stage infections. This study aims to evaluate the trend of HIV/T. pallidum positivity in the Italian blood donor population, defining the type of donor most involved. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of consecutive blood donors' reco

The high risk of malarial recurrence in patients with Plasmodium-mixed infection after treatment with antimalarial drugs: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Malaria mixed infections are often unrecognized by microscopists in the hospitals, and a delay or failure to treat Plasmodium-mixed infection may lead to aggravated morbidity and increased mortality. The present study aimed to quantify the pooled proportion and risk of malarial recurrences after the treatment of Plasmodium-mixed infection. The results of the study may provide benefits in the management of Plasmodium-mixed infection in co-endemic regions. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis searched the international Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPER

Metabolic Adaptations During Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans Co-Infection.

Successful pathogens require metabolic flexibility to adapt to diverse host niches. The presence of co-infecting or commensal microorganisms at a given infection site can further influence the metabolic processes required for a pathogen to cause disease. The Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus and the polymorphic fungus Candida albicans are microorganisms that asymptomatically colonize healthy individuals but can also cause superficial infections or severe invasive disease. Due to many shared host niches, S. aureus and C. albicans are frequently co-isolated from mixed fungal-bacteria

Medicated multi-targeted alginate-based dressings for potential treatment of mixed bacterial-fungal infections in diabetic foot ulcers.

Recently developed medicated dressings target either bacterial or fungal infection only, which is not effective for the treatment of mixed infections common in diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). This study aimed to develop advanced bioactive alginate-based dressings (films and wafers) to deliver therapeutically relevant doses of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and fluconazole (FLU) to target mixed bacterial and fungal infections in DFUs. The alginate compatibility with the drugs was confirmed by SEM, XRD, FTIR and texture analysis, while the medicated wafers showed better fluid handling properties than the film

RSV pneumonia with or without bacterial co-infection among healthy children.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common cause of childhood pneumonia, but there is limited understanding of whether bacterial co-infections affect clinical severity. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study at National Taiwan University Hospital from 2010 to 2019 to compare clinical characteristics and outcomes between RSV with and without bacterial co-infection in children without underlying diseases, including length of hospital stay, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, ventilator use, and death. RESULTS: Among 620 inpatients with RSV pneumonia, the median age

Research Note: Effects of Escherichia coli co-infection on the protective efficacy assessment of two common infectious bronchitis vaccines.

Avian infectious bronchitis (IB), a highly contagious disease hazardous to the poultry industry, is caused by an etiological agent called the infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). Some IBV strains (IBVs) alone usually do not cause high mortality in field conditions if not with secondary pathogens including Escherichia coli (E. coli). Herein, we established an IBV and E. coli co-infection model to evaluate the protective efficacy of two IBV vaccine strains against a new emerging genotype GVI-1 with mild virulence in experimental conditions. Chickens were inoculated with IBV field isolate ZQX (geno

Co-infection of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia and pulmonary CMV in a infant with X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency.

We herein report a rare case of co-infection of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia and pulmonary CMV in a 3-month-old infant with X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency, in which diagnostic clues were obtained from the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. We focus on the value of cytological diagnosis of P. jirovecii pneumonia and pulmonary CMV in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Recognizing morphological characteristics of these pathogenic microorganisms is important to get timely diagnosis and treatment for the patients. Furthermore, repeated severe infections in infants should remind us to scree
