Barriers and Factors Associated With Disclosure of Chlamydia trachomatis Infection Among Sexually Active Individuals in Buea, Cameroon: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis remains a major global public health concern, particularly among sexually active adolescents and young adults. Disclosure of an infection to sexual partners is essential for effective management and reduction of onward transmission; however, barriers to disclosure and communication persist. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the proportion of participants willing to disclose a positive Chlamydia trachomatis result, the barriers to disclosure, and the factors associated with intended disclosure among sexually active individuals in Buea. METHODS: This community-ba

Key mechanisms for chlamydia control in Guangdong, China: a mixed-methods causal-loop analysis.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) infections is increasing globally, with approximately 131 million new cases annually, leading to significant reproductive health complications. Evidence on the impact of chlamydia prevention and treatment programs in developing countries is scarce, leaving a critical gap in implementation. This study, conducted in Guangdong Province, China, aims to identify leverage points to facilitate evidence implementation by visualizing key factors and their interrelationships influencing chlamydia control through a causal loop diagram (C

Prevalence and related factors of symptom-based sexually transmitted infections among men who inject drugs: findings from three nation-wide surveys in Iran, 2010-2023.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STI) are a major public health concern and can increase HIV acquisition and transmission risk. People who inject drugs (PWID) may have elevated vulnerability due to overlapping sexual, injection-related and structural risk environments. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of symptom-based STI among PWID in 2010, 2014 and 2023 and explore factors associated with STI symptom reporting among men who inject drugs (MWID) in 2023. DESIGN: Exploratory analysis of three repeated cross-sectional national bio-behavioural surveillance surveys. SETTING: Ma

Understanding High-Risk Behavior in Mexican University Youth: Links Between Sexual Attitudes, Substance Use, and Mental Health.

Background/Objectives: Sexual attitudes, particularly those on the erotophilia (positive openness) to erotophobia (negative fear) scales, play a critical role in shaping behaviors and health decisions. While associations between sexual behavior and substance use have been documented, limited research has explored how sexual attitudes relate to mental health and substance use among Latin American university populations. This study aimed to examine the associations among erotophilic attitudes, mental health symptoms (anxiety and depression), substance use risk, and sexual behaviors in Mexican un

Disparities in contraceptive preferences among Bangladeshi women: a multilevel logistic regression study.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the contraceptive preferences of currently married women who are not using any method but intend to do so in the future is critical for addressing unmet need and informing targeted family planning strategies. In Bangladesh, despite progress in contraceptive uptake, disparities persist across socio-demographic groups and geographic regions. This study examines the determinants of preferred future contraceptive methods among non-using but intending women in Bangladesh using a multilevel analytic framework. METHODS: We used data from the 2014 Bangladesh Demographic and

Temporal trends in HIV prevention service access and use among female sex workers (FSW) in Mozambique: a comparative analysis 2011-2019.

BACKGROUND: Female sex workers (FSWs) remain disproportionately affected by HIV due to a combination of structural, social, and behavioral factors, including stigma, limited access to health services, gender-based violence, and legal barriers. In Mozambique, where sex work is informal and highly marginalized, monitoring trends in service uptake is essential to guide responsive and equitable HIV interventions. This study analyzes changes in access to and use of HIV prevention services among FSWs between 2011 and 2019. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of cross-sectional bio-behavioral

Structural conditions, social networks, and the HIV vulnerability among Indonesian male labour migrants and motorbike taxi drivers.

BACKGROUND: The Indonesian National AIDS report reveals that the percentage of HIV cases in the country is significantly higher in men compared to women, which is contrary to global AIDS data. Using a conceptual model of how social networks impact health, this paper describes how structural conditions, such as poverty, lack of job opportunities, and lack of income shaped the social networks of Indonesian men. It also describes how these social networks created opportunities for various social mechanisms, including social influence, peer pressure, and intimate contact, that facilitated HIV infe

Characteristics of individuals who received post-exposure prophylaxis and HIV seroconversion in Malawi: an analysis of national routine HIV testing data.

INTRODUCTION: In Malawi, where HIV prevalence remains high at 6.7%, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) has been implemented as one of the HIV prevention strategies. However, there is limited data on the characteristics of PEP users and HIV seroconversion. Using national routine HIV testing services (HTS) programme data, we described the demographic characteristics and risk of exposure to HIV for HTS clients reporting PEP use and determined HIV seroconversion rates among those with baseline HIV-negative results. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study of individuals aged 2 years

Correlates and effects of information, motivation and behavioral skills on primary sexual abstinence among female university students in Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The burden of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies continue to pose significant public health challenges, disproportionately affecting young women. The information-motivation-behavioral (IMB) skills model is useful for understanding risky and safe sexual behavior. However, while the IMB models have been used primarly to understand and promote HIV prevention with condom use behavior, there is limtted research using the IMB model to understand and promote safer sexual dual-protection behaviors, such as abstinence, to address the risk of both STI/HIV and u

HIV screening and associated factors among adolescent girls and young women in Tanzania: analysis of the 2022 demographic and health survey data.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection remains a significant global challenge, particularly in resource-limited settings where access to healthcare services is constrained. Despite substantial efforts to combat HIV, the uptake of screening among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) remains sub-optimal. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of HIV screening and identify the factors associated with screening uptake among AGYW in Tanzania. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional analysis of the 2022 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey (2022 TDHS). The study population

The Role of PrEP Initiation on Depression Severity, HIV-Related Anxiety, HIV Stigma, and PrEP Stigma Among Sexual Minority Men in Singapore: Findings from a Prospective Cohort and Longitudinal Mixed-Methods Study.

This longitudinal concurrent mixed-methods study examined the impact of initiating HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) on depression severity and HIV- and PrEP-related stigma among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in Singapore. A cohort of 53 HIV-negative, GBMSM was followed over 12 months, utilizing repeated quantitative assessments and in-depth qualitative interviews to explore psychosocial outcomes and lived experiences. Quantitative analyses revealed significant reductions in depressive symptoms (adjusted coefficient = -1.55; 95% CI: -2.81, -0.29), HIV-related sti

Peer-education strategies for enhancing sexual health services among female sex workers: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Female sex workers (FSWs) remain highly vulnerable to HIV, other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and broader sexual and reproductive health challenges. Peer-led interventions are widely recommended, yet their specific contributions and implementation gaps are poorly synthesised. This scoping review mapped peer-education strategies used globally to promote sexual health among FSWs, with emphasis on intervention components, outcomes, and evidence gaps, including the role of peers. METHODS: This scoping review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) manual and Arksey and

High prevalence of STIs among men engaged in transactional sex and alcohol use in western Kenya: important implications for STI prevention interventions.

OBJECTIVES: Better data on aetiological prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among African men could greatly strengthen STI prevention efforts and convey benefits to women as well. In an ongoing study among men in Kenya, we analysed baseline STI prevalence and individual characteristics associated with STI. METHODS: In Siaya County, Kenya, we recruited men aged 18-39 years who self-reported engagement in transactional sex and alcohol use. We administered a baseline questionnaire to participants and conducted testing for HIV, herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), Chlamydia trach

DoxyPEP Implementation Preferences for Bacterial STD Prevention Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men Living With and Without HIV in Los Angeles: A Mixed-Methods Approach.

Bacterial sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain prominent in the United States among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Doxycycline for post-exposure prophylaxis (DoxyPEP) is a regimen by which the antibiotic doxycycline is taken after sex to prevent bacterial STDs, such as, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. Despite this, this study was conducted because there are a limited number of publications that describe GBMSM's knowledge of, and interest in, taking DoxyPEP and preferences regarding its implementation. We conducted a mixed-methods study between November 2

Vulnerability to Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) / Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) among adolescent girls and young women in India: A rapid review.

Limited evidence is available on the vulnerability of Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) to sexual risk behaviour and STI/HIV. Though there are almost no statistics available on vulnerability, related literature suggests that AGYW have low awareness about sexual risk behaviour/ transmission and the prevalence of STI/HIV, making them vulnerable. We conducted a rapid review of peer-reviewed studies addressing transmission network, prevalence, incidence awareness, common determinants of sexual risk behaviour/STI/HIV, health-seeking behaviour and existing interventions addressing the situatio

Adverse Childhood Experiences and HIV-Related Stigma: A Quantitative Survey of Tanzanian Men, June 2019.

Experiencing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may impact personal opinions, attitudes, and judgments, which can further result in HIV-related stigma. HIV-related stigma consequentially may impact HIV preventive measures such as HIV testing, pre-exposure prophylaxis uptake, and condom use. The extent to which ACEs influence HIV-related stigma perception has not been well studied. Therefore, the study aimed to examine the association between ACEs and perceived and interpersonal HIV-related stigma among Tanzanian HIV-negative men. Quantitative survey data were obtained from the Tanzania STEP

Does self-perceived HIV risk mediate the potential association between HIV-related symbolic stigma and sexual behaviour among young adult women in Cape Town, South Africa?

BACKGROUND: Perception of risk is a central construct of models of health behaviour change as it is assumed to be an intermediate step before adoption of the related safer behaviour. In the context of HIV/AIDS, the literature suggests that psychosocial factors such as stigmatising attitudes related to stereotyping people who contract HIV may influence how people perceive their own risk of HIV infection. However, findings on the relationships between HIV-related stigma, HIV risk perception and sexual behaviour have been inconsistent. We investigated the potential mediating role of HIV risk perc
