The Role of Wildlife and Climate Change in the Emergence of One Health-Related Viral Diseases in Australia.

Wildlife-origin viral diseases are an increasing One Health challenge in Australia, with climate change emerging as a key driver of disease emergence, transmission, and spillover. Australian wildlife, particularly marsupials, birds, and bats, serve as important reservoirs of zoonotic and vector-borne viruses. However, the combined influence of wildlife reservoirs and climate change on viral disease ecology in Australia has not been comprehensively synthesised. This review examines the epidemiology, significance, and climate sensitivity of wildlife-associated viral diseases and evaluates how cl

High within-herd prevalence and assessment of production impacts of Coxiella burnetii in postpartum cattle from a Scottish dairy herd.

Coxiella burnetii is endemic in Great Britain dairy herds but detailed investigations of C. burnetii epidemiology and impacts on livestock production in this region are scarce. The objectives of this cross-sectional study were to first determine the within-herd prevalence of C. burnetii on a commercial Scottish dairy farm with prior detection of C. burnetii and second assess the relationship between pathogen load and individual health and performance traits. Vaginal swabs were collected from cows up to seven days postpartum. DNA extracts were tested for C. burnetii by IS1111 qPCR assay. Genera

Long-term monitoring of particulate matter in an Asian community using research-grade low-cost sensors.

Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 µm or less (PM2.5) poses significant health risks, necessitating comprehensive exposure assessment. Long-term community monitoring can provide representative exposure levels for environmental epidemiological studies. This study deployed nine research-grade low-cost sensors (AS-LUNG-O) for 3.5 years of street-level PM2.5 monitoring in an Asian community, evaluating temporospatial variations, hotspots, and emission sources. The hourly mean PM2.5 concentrations from December 2017 to July 2021 were 24.3 ± 14.1 µg/m3. PM2.5 levels were typicall

A multidimensional network of factors associated with long COVID in the French population.

BACKGROUND: Various factors associated with long COVID have been evidenced, but the heterogeneity of definitions and epidemiological investigations has often hidden risk pathways relevant for understanding and preventing this condition. METHODS: This nationwide random sampling survey conducted in France after the Omicron waves in autumn 2022 assessed eight sets of factors potentially associated with long COVID in a structured epidemiological investigation based on a conceptual model accounting for the relationships between these sets of factors. A representative sample of 1813 adults of whom

Epidemiological Features of Sinonasal Adenocarcinoma and Prognostic Nomogram: A Study Based on the SEER Database.

OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to update demographic profiles of sinonasal adenocarcinoma (SNAC) between 2000 and 2020, identify independent prognostic risk factors, and devise a predictive nomogram for overall survival (OS). METHODS: Utilizing the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, cases of SNAC from 2000 to 2020 were analyzed for incidence trends. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression models helped pinpoint factors impacting patient survival. A prognostic nomogram was then created based on these factors and assessed via concordance index, ROC analysis, and calibra

Leveraging machine learning for predicting Opisthorchis viverrini infection in cats: A tool for veterinary epidemiology.

Opisthorchis viverrini (Ov) infection is a major public health concern in the Greater Mekong Subregion, with cats as key reservoir hosts. Although machine learning (ML) is widely used in human medicine, its application in veterinary epidemiology remains limited. This study aimed to develop interpretable ML models to predict Ov infection and to identify key risk factors in cats using data from 175 households in endemic areas. Five ML algorithms-Classification Tree, Random Forest, Ridge Logistic Regression (Ridge LR), eXtreme Gradient Boosting, and Support Vector Machine (SVM)-were optimized usi

Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression for Social Epidemiologic Research.

BACKGROUND: Little attention has been devoted to framing multiple continuous social variables as a "mixture" for social epidemiologic analysis. We propose using the Bayesian kernel machine regression analytic framework that yields univariate, bivariate, and overall exposure mixture effects. METHODS: Using data from the 2023 Survey of Racism and Public Health, we conducted a Bayesian kernel machine regression analysis to study several individual, social, and structural factors as an exposure mixture and their relationships with psychological distress among individuals with at least one police

Epidemiologic association and shared genetic architecture between cataract and hearing difficulties among middle-aged and older adults.

Age-related cataract and hearing difficulties are major sensory disorders that often co-exist in the global-wide elderly and have a tangible influence on the quality of life. However, the epidemiologic association between cataract and hearing difficulties remains unexplored, while little is known about whether the two share their genetic etiology. We first investigated the clinical association between cataract and hearing difficulties using the UK Biobank covering 502,543 individuals. Both unmatched analysis (adjusted for confounders) and a matched analysis (one control matched for each patien
