To characterize the altered directed connectivity within a distributed cortical network, as is associated with the impaired attention modulation involved in the manifestation of mood disorder in depression, short-window partial directed coherence (PDC) combining with the event-related brain potentials (ERPs) was applied in this study. ERPs were recorded from 13 normal subjects and 12 depressed patients during visual search for facial expressions. The evoked N2 component of ERPs by responding to all neutral faces (F(1,22)=5.51, P<0.05) and the positive face was reduced in the depressed patients

While regions of the lateral occipital cortex (LOC) are known to be selective for objects relative to feature-matched controls, it is not known what set of cues or configurations are used to promote this selectivity. Many theories of perceptual organization have emphasized the figure-ground relationship as being especially important in object-level processing. In the present work we studied the role of perceptual organization in eliciting visual evoked potentials from the object selective LOC. To do this, we used two-region stimuli in which the regions were modulated at different temporal freq…

OBJECTIVE: This report describes a novel case in which superior canal dehiscence syndrome was unmasked by successful stapes surgery for otosclerosis.
METHODS: Case report and literature review regarding superior canal dehiscence syndrome.
INTRODUCTION: Superior canal dehiscence syndrome is a rare but well described condition in which audiovestibular symptoms are caused by noise or straining. A dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal in the floor of the middle cranial fossa is responsible, and acts as a 'third window' into the inner ear.
CASE HISTORY: A patient with confirmed otosclero

N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) has been used extensively in biochemical assays as an inhibitor of the NEM sensitive fusion protein (NSF). However, examination of the effect of NEM on transmitter release in more physiologically relevant preparations has proved inconclusive. In the present study, we have examined the effect of low concentrations of NEM on synaptic transmission in intact nerve-muscle preparations from toads (Bufo marinus). Under conditions of low transmitter release probability (0.3 mM calcium, 1 mM magnesium), treatment with NEM (10 microM) caused a significant increase in the amplitude

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and reliability of intraoperative spinal monitoring using spinal cord-evoked and compound muscle action potentials. We reviewed 716 cases of spinal monitoring performed over 15 years. The series contained 672 patients with spinal functions that could be monitored intraoperatively; 44 (6.1%) were impossible to record. Based on the 21 impossible-to-record patients, it is evident that missing a serious case such as a Frankel B type spinal cord injury indicates the limitations of the current monitoring methods for stimulating and recording. BACKGROUND: Visceral hyperalgesia may play an important part in the pathophysiology of the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). We investigated the neuronal afferent pathways in healthy volunteers and IBS patients by recording evoked potentials (EPs) elicited by electrical stimulation of the colon and abdominal skin inside and outside the referred pain area.
METHODS: Six healthy subjects and nine IBS patients met the inclusion criteria. Morphology and topography of EPs to painful electrical stimuli were estimated in the rectosigmoid junction and on the skin inside/outside the referred pain areas.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the reliability of visual evoked potentials obtained with a set of multiple chromatic and achromatic patterns (C-VEPs) in differentiating asymptomatic perifoveal retinal impairment from central conduction impairment.
METHODS: We propose a set of colored pattern stimuli that allows relatively differential activation of the magnocellular and parvocellular pathways. The system runs on a standard Pentium PC with peripherals that present stimuli and collect, analyze and print data. P1 latencies of C-VEPs obtained with achromatic (black/white) and chromatic (blue/black and re…

The cellular and network mechanisms of the transition of brief interictal discharges to prolonged seizures are a crucial issue in epilepsy. Here we used hippocampal slices exposed to ACSF containing 0 Mg(2+) to explore mechanisms for the transition to prolonged (3-42 sec) seizure-like ("ictal") discharges. Epileptiform activity, evoked by Shaffer collateral stimulation, triggered prolonged bursts in CA1, in 50-60% of slices, from both adult and young (postnatal day 13-21) rats. In these cases the first component of the CA1 epileptiform burst was followed by a train of population spikes at freq

In the rat hippocampus, during the first postnatal week, network activity is characterized by GABA-driven giant depolarizing potentials (GDPs) associated with calcium signals that are readily blocked when the GABAA antagonist bicuculline is applied to the bath. Towards the end of the first postnatal week, in concomitance with the shift of GABA responses from the depolarizing to the hyperpolarizing direction, functional glutamatergic connections start appearing. At this developmental stage, application of bicuculline blocks GABAA-mediated inhibition and induces the appearance of interictal epil

We examined nitric oxide mediated regulation of pulmonary arterial and venous smooth muscle (PASM and PVSM, respectively): whether this inhibition is mediated via prejunctional receptors on adrenergic nerve endings; whether NO is neuronally derived; the relationship between degree of inhibition and vessel size; and identification of the signalling mechanisms involved. Canine pulmonary vascular tissues were generally quiescent, while human PASM exhibited spontaneous phasic activity. The nitric oxide (NO) synthesis inhibitor Nomega-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA; 10(-4) M) increased tone and enhanced p

1. The effects of wortmannin, an inhibitor of phosphatidylinositol (PI) kinases and myosin light chain kinase, on the quantal release of neurotransmitter from mouse phrenic nerve were investigated. 2. Wortmannin (10 - 100 microM) initially enhanced, thereafter progressively depressed spontaneous quantal discharge (miniature endplate potential, mepp). The mean amplitude and the amplitude distribution of mepp were not altered. 3. The compound inhibited and prevented the intensive quantal release evoked by high KC1 solution as well as the mepp burst induced by alpha-latrotoxin, a polypeptide toxi

There is evidence that the manner in which the central auditory system processes transient signals can be altered by either of two seemingly unrelated experimental factors, namely, hearing loss, or the presence of a continuous tone of moderate intensity. In particular, altered processing of brief signals in the central auditory system is indicated by either: (i) lower (better) behaviorally measured thresholds for pulsate electrical stimulation of brain-stem auditory nuclei, or (ii) an increased amplitude of some components of the brain stem or cortical potentials evoked by brief acoustic stimu

The regulation of synaptic transmission by Ca(2+)-activated potassium (gKca) channels was investigated at the frog neuromuscular junction (nmj). Charybdotoxin (CTX), a blocker of certain types of gKca channels, induced a twofold increase of transmitter release. Similar results were obtained with purified natural toxin, synthetic toxin, and recombinant toxin. Apamin, a blocker of a different type of gKca channel, did not alter transmitter release. CTX was ineffective after intraterminal Ca2+ buffering was increased by application of the membrane-permeant Ca2+ buffer dimethyl-BAPTA-AM. By itself

The role of G proteins in cholinergic suppression of Ca2+-activated K current was studied in isolated canine colonic myocytes with the whole cell voltage-clamp technique. Acetylcholine (ACh; 10.0 microM) caused a 64 +/- 2.4% depression in the Ca2+-dependent component of the outward current evoked at potentials between -45 and -15 mV when GTP (0.1 microM) was included in the pipette-filling solution. This effect was reversed within 2-4 min on washout of ACh. Without GTP in the filling solution, ACh caused a 15 +/- 2.5% depression in outward current in 60% of the cells tested. When the non-hydro

Some basic characteristics of monkey and human acoustic emissions are reviewed and some new data presented. These characteristics are discussed in relation to the sensorineural output of the cochlea. Input--output functions and the frequency dispersal in the waveform of acoustic emissions (AE) from monkeys are described. New findings include changes in the human AE during trains of clicks and sustained suppression of the AE after short bursts of noise of moderate intensity. The similarly of click-evoked AE latencies and whole-nerve action potential (AP) latencies for low stimulus level tonebur

Contributions of evoked discharge in nociceptors with C-fibers to the temporal profiles of magnitude judgments of pain by humans were determined for heat stimulations of the skin before and after the development of hyperalgesia (increased sensitivity to pain) produced by a mild heat injury. Human subjects continuously rated the magnitude of pain evoked by short-duration heat stimuli of 39-51 degrees C delivered to the hairy skin of the arm or leg (calf or foot) before and after the development of hyperalgesia produced by a conditioning stimulus (CS) of either 50 degrees C for 100 s or 48 degre

The variety of sources of brachial plexus injuries (BPIs) and the severity and similarity of their clinical symptoms with those of other injuries make their differential diagnosis difficult. Enriching their diagnosis with objective high-sensitivity diagnostics such as clinical neurophysiology may lead to satisfactory treatment results, and magnetic stimulation (MEP) might be an advantageous addition to the diagnostic standard of electrical stimulation used in electroneurography (ENG). The asymptomatic side in BPI cases sometimes shows only subclinical neurological deficits; this study aimed to
