Pretherapeutic FDG-PET total metabolic tumor volume predicts response to induction therapy in pediatric Hodgkin's lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Standardized treatment in pediatric patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) follows risk stratification by tumor stage, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and tumor bulk. We aimed to identify quantitative parameters from pretherapeutic FDG-PET to assist prediction of response to induction chemotherapy. METHODS: Retrospective analysis in 50 children with HL (f:18; m:32; median age, 14.8 [4-18] a) consecutively treated according to EuroNet-PHL-C1 (n = 42) or -C2 treatment protocol (n = 8). Total metabolic tumor volume (MTV) in pretherapeutic FDG-PET was defined using a semi-automated, bac

Clinical T staging is superior to fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography for predicting local outcomes after intra-arterial infusion chemoradiotherapy for maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma.

Concomitant intra-arterial infusion chemoradiotherapy (IA-CRT) has been used to treat locally advanced maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma (MSSCC) with positive outcomes. However, an optimal predictive prognostic factor for MSSCC treated with IA-CRT remains elusive. The aim of the present study was to assess the feasibility of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET), including volumetric parameters, to predict the prognosis of MSSCC treated with IA-CRT. Twenty-four patients with newly diagnosed MSSCC receiving FDG-PET imaging before IA-CRT treatment were analyzed in t

Precise preoperative diagnosis of struma ovarii with pseudo-Meigs' syndrome mimicking ovarian cancer with the combination of 131I scintigraphy and 18F-FDG PET: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Struma ovarii is a rare ovarian neoplasm that often appears malignant on conventional imaging. Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome with ascites, pleural effusion, and elevated serum CA 125 levels is much rarer and leads to misdiagnosis of ovarian cancer and unnecessary extended surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old woman with abdominal distention and dyspnoea was referred to our hospital. Ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a polycystic ovarian tumor with a solid component, pleural effusion, and massive ascites with negative cytology. Her serum

Novel Features and Abnormal Pattern of Cerebral Glucose Metabolism in Spinocerebellar Ataxia 19.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 19 (SCA19), allelic with spinocerebellar ataxia type 22 (SCA22), is a rare syndrome caused by mutations in the KCND3 gene which encodes the potassium channel Kv4.3. Only 18 SCA19/22 families and sporadic cases of different ethnic backgrounds have been previously reported. As in other SCAs, the SCA19/22 phenotype is variable and usually consists of adult-onset slowly progressive ataxia and cognitive impairment; myoclonus and seizures; mild Parkinsonism occurs in some cases. Here we describe a Swedish SCA19/22 family spanning five generations and harboring the T377M m

18F-FDG PET-CT pattern in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is an important and treatable cause of neurologic impairment. Diagnosis is complicated due to symptoms overlapping with other age related disorders. The pathophysiology underlying iNPH is not well understood. We explored FDG-PET abnormalities in iNPH patients in order to determine if FDG-PET may serve as a biomarker to differentiate iNPH from common neurodegenerative disorders. METHODS: We retrospectively compared 18F-FDG PET-CT imaging patterns from seven iNPH patients (mean age 74 ± 6 years) to age and sex matched controls, as well

Coronary Adventitial and Perivascular Adipose Tissue Inflammation in Patients With Vasospastic Angina.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggested that perivascular components, such as perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) and adventitial vasa vasorum (VV), play an important role as a source of various inflammatory mediators in cardiovascular disease. OBJECTIVES: The authors tested their hypothesis that coronary artery spasm is associated with perivascular inflammation in patients with vasospastic angina (VSA) using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). METHODS: This study prospectively examined 27 consecutive VSA patients with acetylcholine-induced

The utility of FDG-PET in the differential diagnosis of Parkinsonism.

INTRODUCTION: Differential diagnosis of parkinsonian disorders can be difficult on clinical grounds, especially in the early stage. Recent advancements in 18-F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) imaging reveals different patterns of regional glucose metabolism in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD) and atypical parkinsonian syndromes, such as multiple system atrophy (MSA), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal syndrome (CBS), which may help differentiating between these conditions. PURPOSE: To assess the utility of FDG-PET imaging in differential diagno

Brain metabolism in patients with freezing of gait after hypoxic-ischemic brain injury: A pilot study.

Movement disorders are 1 of the long-term neurological complications that can occur after hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI). However, freezing of gait (FOG) after HIBI is rare. The aim of this study was to examine the brain metabolism of patients with FOG after HIBI using F-18 fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography (F-18 FDG PET).We consecutively enrolled 11 patients with FOG after HIBI. The patients' overall brain metabolism was measured by F-18 FDG PET, and we compared their regional brain metabolic activity with that from 15 healthy controls using a voxel-by-voxel-based st

A 54-year-old man with new-onset ventricular fibrillation.

CLINICAL INTRODUCTION: A 54-year-old man without significant medical history presented with sudden-onset chest discomfort and multiple episodes of ventricular fibrillation requiring external defibrillation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Coronary angiography ruled out significant artery stenosis. Both ventriculography and echocardiography revealed decreased left ventricular ejection fraction (25%). On examination, he was haemodynamically stable. The lungs were clear to auscultation and there was no jugular venous dilation. The cardiac examination revealed a regular rate and rhythm without m

False positive 18FDG PET-CT results due to exogenous lipoid pneumonia secondary to oily drug inhalation: A case report.

RATIONALE: Exogenous lipoid pneumonia is a rare condition due to abnormal presence of oily substances in the lungs. It is a rarely known cause for false positive FDG PET-CT results and can sometimes lead to invasive investigations. Searching and finding the source of the oily substance is one of the keys to the diagnosis. Inhalation of oily drugs during snorting has rarely been described. PATIENT CONCERNS: A patient with well controlled HIV infection was referred for an FDG PET-CT to assess extension of Kaposi's disease, recently removed from his right foot. The patient had no particular symp

[18F]-Fluorodeoxyglucose Uptake in Lymphoid Tissue Serves as a Predictor of Disease Outcome in the Nonhuman Primate Model of Monkeypox Virus Infection.

Real-time bioimaging of infectious disease processes may aid countermeasure development and lead to an improved understanding of pathogenesis. However, few studies have identified biomarkers for monitoring infections using in vivo imaging. Previously, we demonstrated that positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging with [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) can monitor monkeypox disease progression in vivo in nonhuman primates (NHPs). In this study, we investigated [18F]-FDG-PET/CT imaging of immune processes in lymphoid tissues to identify patterns of inflammation in the monkep

Unusual Case of Postmenopausal Diffuse Endometriosis Mimicking Metastastic Ovarian Malignancy.

Endometriosis is a common gynecologic condition of the premenopausal years. However, postmenopausal endometriosis is rare (2.2%) and thought to be related to high level of circulating estrogen, especially in hormonal replacement therapy. We present a case of a 69-year-old postmenopausal woman, previously healthy and on no regular medication, with diffuse peritoneal endometriosis and bilateral ovarian endometrioma mimicking metastatic ovarian carcinoma on FDG PET/CT. Both ovarian endometrioma had low-grade activity, but more strikingly, there was diffuse FDG-avid peritoneal dissemination and gr
