The government of Nepal has articulated a commitment to the provision of post-abortion contraception since the implementation of a legal safe abortion policy in 2004. Despite this, gaps in services remain. This study examined the perspectives of abortion service providers and administrators regarding strengths and shortcomings of post-abortion contraceptive service provision. In-depth interviews were conducted with 24 abortion providers and administrators at four major health facilities that provide legal abortion in Nepal. Facility factors perceived to impact post-abortion contraceptive servi

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Media attention on 2009 H1N1 vaccination has been negative. Information on the willingness of health care workers (HCWs) to accept vaccination against the 2009 pandemic influenza is sparse. Thus, we undertook this study to investigate the attitude of HCWs toward this vaccine and possible factors associated with vaccine acceptance.
DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional observational study of HCWs conducted at Saudi Aramco Medical Services Organization (SAMSO) in February 2009.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 250 individuals a

Women volunteers with or without a first-degree relative with breast cancer (FDR) were compared on several measures. Relative to the comparison group, women in the FDR group had more negative attitudes about breast cancer (including more anxiety about breast cancer), viewed their risk for getting breast cancer as greater (although they underestimated the actual risk), and were more likely to engage in appropriate screening behavior. A high percentage of women in both groups stated that they would want to have a genetic test for breast cancer if it were generally available.

Health concerns of high school students in the 10th grade and again in the 12th grade were studied. The students filled out an anonymous questionnaire that included a list of 73 concerns. At both ages their main concerns were reportedly related to school. Concerns relating to army service ranked high particularly in the 12th grade, among both sexes. Concerns relating to sexual relations were frequent among boys at both ages, whereas concerns about mood and loneliness were more frequent among girls. Reports on physical concerns were frequently related to height among the younger boys and weight

In an earlier review of the behavioral effects of HIV counseling and testing (HIV CT), Higgins and colleagues (1991) found that the evidence regarding the ability of HIV CT to influence HIV-risk related practices was largely inconclusive. This article reviews 35 domestic and international studies published since that time to reassess the scientific data regarding the ability of HIV CT to motivate changes in risk-related practices and to promote help-seeking behavior. The studies identified for this review were grouped into four categories according to subject population: (1) men who have sex w

Eighty-two of 83 mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, were surveyed to determine their attitudes and behaviors toward AIDS prevention and family planning counseling with psychiatrically ill female outpatients. Nearly all reported that information should be provided on AIDS and family planning. However, they reported that they had raised topics of AIDS with only 19% of patients and family planning with only 25% of patients. This lack of communication was confirmed by patients' own reports. Factors which might relate to this lack of communication are explored.

Although primary prevention of HAV and HBV can be achieved through vaccination, the burden of HCV can only be reduced through behavioral interventions to reduce its risk factors. This study evaluated knowledge regarding transmission, clinical manifestations and prevention of viral hepatitis in Puerto Rico. We assessed the level of knowledge about HAV (six questions), HBV (12 questions) and HCV (eight questions) among non-institutionalized Puerto Rican adults aged 21-64 years. Demographic characteristics and self-reported knowledge of these infections were determined through a face-to-face inte

Preconception care in women with diabetes reduces the risk of spontaneous abortion and congenital malformations as a result of improved glycemic control before and during organogenesis. Prepregnancy planning encompasses optimizing glycemic control and also affording the opportunity for genetic counseling, contraceptive selection, management of diabetes complications, and evaluation of psychosocial aspects of pregnancy, childbearing, and diabetes care. The purpose of this article is to provide nurses with current clinical assessment and management strategies of women with diabetes in order to i

BACKGROUND: Impairment caused by alcohol is the leading risk factor for trauma. However, many physicians do not screen for alcohol use because of concerns about confidentiality and denial of insurance coverage. The purpose of this study was to examine objectively the confidentiality issues and insurance statutes affecting alcohol screening in trauma centers.
METHODS: We conducted a survey of insurance commissioners in all 50 states to determine the prevalence of statutes allowing denial of coverage for injuries sustained while impaired due to alcohol, reviewed state insurance laws, and review

The disparity between supply and demand for life-saving and life-sustaining donor organs disproportionally affects ethnic and racial minorities, which is partly due to negative attitudes and beliefs regarding transplantation. One way to address these disparities is to implement targeted and tailored behavioral interventions among minority communities, such as the American Muslim population. We designed, implemented, and evaluated a religiously tailored, ethically balanced, and mosque-based educational intervention within the USA. This intervention increased participants' biomedical and religio

HIV disproportionately affects Latino men who have sex with men (LMSM) in the United States (U.S.). Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) reduces HIV transmission, but prescription and use rates remain low among this population. This systematic literature review aimed to (1) identify and categorize barriers and facilitators of LMSM's PrEP use, and (2) leverage findings for future interventions. The PICOS structure was used to establish inclusion criteria to search studies published between 2018 and 2023 on December 24 2023. Covidence was used to screen studies and PRISMA 2020 to report the findings.

INTRODUCTION: Black Americans and individuals in the Southern United States bear a disproportionate burden of HIV. To address stigma, a key contributor to these inequities, we developed Cutting Out Stigma (COS), a barbershop-based education and multimedia intervention.
METHODS: We recruited and trained Tennessee (U.S.) barbers as COS Men's Health Ambassadors and invited them to participate in a 6-month COS pilot implementation trial from September 2024 to March 2025. COS barbers provided sexual health education, referrals to HIV (and other ancillary) services for barbershop clients and shared
