Sex differences in the neural underpinnings of unimanual and bimanual control in adults.

While many of the movements we make throughout our day involve just one upper limb, most daily movements require a certain degree of coordination between both upper limbs. Historically, sex differences in eye-hand coordination have been observed. As well, there are demonstrated sex-specific differences in hemisphere symmetry, interhemispheric connectivity, and motor cortex organization. While it has been suggested that these anatomical differences may underlie sex-related differences in performance, sex differences in the functional neural correlate underlying bimanual performance have not bee

Assessment of Cranial Sexual Dimorphism Using 3D Reconstruction: Implications for Gender-Affirming Surgery.

BACKGROUND: As more centers offer gender-affirming procedures, dissemination of best practices is critical to ensuring quality care. This study is the first to use advanced 3-dimensional visualization software to characterize cranial differences between natal males and females, as they relate to planning for facial gender-affirming operations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on randomly selected patients with facial computed tomography imaging performed at a single institution between February 2020 and July 2021. Patients with acquired bony deformity on computed

Effects of acromegaly treatment on left ventricular systolic function assessed by speckle tracking echocardiography in relation to sex differences: results from a prospective single center study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the preserved LVEF, patients with acromegaly are characterized by subclinical systolic dysfunction i.e., abnormal global longitudinal strain (GLS) assessed by speckle tracking echocardiography (STE). The effect of acromegaly treatment on LV systolic function assessed by STE, has not been evaluated so far. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-two naïve acromegalic patients without detectable heart disease were enrolled in a prospective, single-center study. 2D-Echocardiography and STE were performed at diagnosis, 3&6 months on preoperative somatostatin receptor ligand (SRL) treatme

The sex-dependent and enduring impact of pubertal stress on health and disease.

Illness is often predicated long before the manifestation of its symptoms. Exposure to stressful experiences particularly during critical periods of development, such as puberty and adolescence, can induce various physical and mental illnesses. Puberty is a critical period of maturation for neuroendocrine systems, such as the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axes. Exposure to adverse experiences during puberty can impede normal brain reorganizing and remodelling and result in enduring consequences on brain functioning and behaviour. Stress responsiv

A hard pill to swallow? Parental health shocks and children's mental health.

Based on comprehensive administrative health record data from Austria, this study examines how children's mental health responds to a severe parental health shock. To account for the endogeneity of a serious parental illness, our sample is restricted to children who experience the health shock of a parent at some point in time and we exploit the timing of shocks in a dynamic DID setting. We find a positive causal effect of parental health shocks on children's mental health care utilization. Affected children have higher medical attendance for the treatment of mental illnesses, consume more psy

Association between lower-level of environmental lead exposure and reactive and proactive aggression in youth: Sex differences.

Lead exposure during childhood has been associated with a variety of negative outcomes, including antisocial/aggressive behavior. However, different subtypes of antisocial behavior have been found to have different neurobiological correlates, and it is unclear whether lead exposure is related to specific subtypes of aggressive behavior. The objective of the study was to examine relationships between childhood blood lead levels (BLL) and proactive and reactive aggression. Further, given prior findings of sex differences in the effects of lead exposure, we examine whether there are sex differenc

Sex differences in the symptom network structure of depression: Findings from a nationwide sample of the Spanish adult population.

BACKGROUND: Sex differences in the prevalence and clinical features of depression have been widely described. However, some authors argue that categorical diagnostic systems do not adequately capture the complexity of depression. The aim of this study was to examine sex differences in the symptom network structure of depressive symptoms among individuals with a major depressive episode. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 510 participants (age 62.17 ± 14.43, 71.96 % women) from a nationwide study of the Spanish non-institutionalised adult population (Edad con Salud). To estimate the presen

Sex differences in subjective cognitive impairment and clinical correlates in Chinese patients with subthreshold depression.

OBJECTIVE: Subthreshold depression (SD) is a global mental health problem given its high prevalence, comorbidity, functional impairment, and its association with increased service utilization. However, currently little is known about sex differences of SD in cognitive impairment with clinical correlates. This study aims to explore sex differences in subjective cognitive impairment and clinically associated risk factors in Chinese patients with subthreshold depression (SD). METHODS: A total of 126 patients with SD, 40 males and 86 females, aged 18-45 years, were included in this cross-sectiona

Neuroimaging Investigations of Obesity: a Review of the Treatment of Sex from 2010.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize the results of adult obesity neuroimaging studies (structural, resting-state, task-based, diffusion tensor imaging) published from 2010, with a focus on the treatment of sex as an important biological variable in the analysis, and identify gaps in sex difference research. RECENT FINDINGS: Neuroimaging studies have shown obesity-related changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity. However, relevant factors such as sex are often not considered. We conducted a systematic review and keyword co-occurrence analysis. Literature searches identified 6281 arti

Gonadal sex vs genetic sex in experimental atherosclerosis.

Epidemiological data and interventional studies with hormone replacement therapy suggest that women, at least until menopause, are at decreased cardiovascular risk compared to men. Still the molecular mechanisms beyond this difference are debated and the investigation in experimental models of atherosclerosis has been pivotal to prove that the activation of the estrogen receptor is atheroprotective, despite not enough to explain the differences reported in cardiovascular disease between male and female. This casts also for investigating the importance of the sex chromosome complement (genetic

Sex-related differences for uric acid in the prediction of cardiovascular events in essential hypertension. A population prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Uric acid (UA) is an independent prognostic factor for cardiovascular events, but there are no data demonstrating a different risk profile between women and men. Thus, we tested whether UA is associated with a possible sex-related difference in fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular events. METHODS: In this prospective population-based study we enrolled 1,650 never-treated Caucasian hypertensive outpatients referred to Catanzaro University Hospital (Italy). Inclusion criteria were newly diagnosed hypertensive patients, aged 20 years or more. Exclusion criteria were secondary form of h

"We Eat Without Thinking: We Just Eat, Eat, Eat" - A Thematic Exploration of Cultural Practices of Ethnically Diverse Youth and Their Parents Who Are at Risk for Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes.

PURPOSE: Cultural beliefs and practices influence management of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in youth and their parents, and have been minimally explored, limiting our understanding and implementation of preventative healthcare. An enhanced evidence base may inform comprehensive, effective community health nursing (CHN). Thus, the purpose of this research was to explore the influence of youths' and their parents' understandings of cultural practices on risk for prediabetes and T2D. DESIGN: A secondary thematic analysis was conducted. Qualitative data were obtained from semi-structured interviews wit

Sex Differences in Recovery Capital Gains Post-Incarceration.

BACKGROUND: People with substance use disorders are highly prevalent in the carceral system. Recovery capital (RC) is the resources available to an individual to initiate or maintain substance use cessation. Sex differences have been identified in RC during both active substance use and recovery in the general population, however, less is known about these sex differences in the post-incarceration population. METHODS: Participants (n = 136) were those with an opioid or stimulant use disorder with past year involvement with the Iowa criminal justice system (USA), who completed the Assessment o

Living Alone and Depressive Symptoms Among Older Japanese: Do Urbanization and Time Period Matter?

OBJECTIVES: Previous research has suggested cross-national differences in the association between living alone and well-being among older adults. This study examined whether the association varied across social contexts within the country, Japan, in terms of varying degree of urbanization and differential time periods. METHODS: Data were obtained from a nine-wave nationwide longitudinal survey with a probability sample of Japanese adults aged 60 years and over. Respondents belonged to one of the three periods (around 1990, 2000, and 2015) according to the year they commenced participation. As
