Global Prevalence and Impact of Rumination Syndrome.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Rumination syndrome is a Disorder of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI) of unknown etiology. We aimed to assess its global prevalence and potential associations with other medical conditions. METHODS: Data were collected via the Internet in 26 countries. Subjects were evenly distributed by country, sex, and age groups and were invited for a "health survey" using the Rome IV diagnostic questionnaire and a supplementary questionnaire addressing factors potentially associated with DGBI. RESULTS: In all, 54,127 subjects completed the survey (51% male; mean age, 44.3 years). The over

Patients' experiences and perceptions of Guillain-Barré syndrome: A systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative research.

BackgroundGuillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy, with an incidence of 1-2/100,000 per year. Its severity is variable, ranging from very mild cases with brief weakness to severe paralysis, leading to inability to breathe independently, or even death. Currently there is limited evidence exploring the experiences of GBS patients. The aim of this study was to review patients' experiences and perceptions of GBS and its variants at diagnosis, discharge and during recovery, by conducting a systematic review and thematic meta-synthesis of qualitative studies of pat

Real-time interactive artificial intelligence of things-based prediction for adverse outcomes in adult patients with pneumonia in the emergency department.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence of things (AIoT) may be a solution for predicting adverse outcomes in emergency department (ED) patients with pneumonia; however, this issue remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted this study to clarify it. METHODS: We identified 52,626 adult ED patients with pneumonia from three hospitals between 2010 and 2019 for this study. Thirty-three feature variables from electronic medical records were used to construct an artificial intelligence (AI) model to predict sepsis or septic shock, respiratory failure, and mortality. After comparisons of the predictive ac

Internet of medical things (IoMT)-integrated biosensors for point-of-care testing of infectious diseases.

On global scale, the current situation of pandemic is symptomatic of increased incidences of contagious diseases caused by pathogens. The faster spread of these diseases, in a moderately short timeframe, is threatening the overall population wellbeing and conceivably the economy. The inadequacy of conventional diagnostic tools in terms of time consuming and complex laboratory-based diagnosis process is a major challenge to medical care. In present era, the development of point-of-care testing (POCT) is in demand for fast detection of infectious diseases along with "on-site" results that are he

A role for the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in enhancing regulation of both craving and negative emotions in internet gaming disorder: A randomized trial.

Reward-seeking and relief from negative emotions are two central motivational drives underlying addictions. Impaired executive control over craving and negative emotions contributes to compulsive addictive behaviors. Neuroimaging evidence has implicated the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in regulating craving or emotions. This study aims at examining whether anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over a specific region of the PFC would enhance both regulation processes. Thirty-three men with internet gaming disorder received active (1.5 mA for 20 minutes) and sham tDCS over the right d

Shorter Diagnostic Delay in Polish Adult Patients With Common Variable Immunodeficiency and Symptom Onset After 1999.

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is the most clinically significant primary antibody immunodeficiency recognized in adulthood. Previously published data have shown an average diagnostic delay of 10 years for Polish adult patients with CVID. In the current study, we aimed to analyze the current diagnostic delay of adult patients with CVID in Poland. To this end, we identified patients from four immunological centers specialized in the care of adult patients with primary immunodeficiencies (PID). Demographic and clinical data of patients were collected using an internet database. We ident

Tramadol/Diclofenac Fixed-Dose Combination: A Review of Its Use in Severe Acute Pain.

Pain is a health issue affecting all populations, regardless of age, gender, economic status, race, or geography. Acute pain is the most common type of pain, with a complex aetiology. Inadequately managed acute pain adversely affects quality of life and imposes significant economic burden. The majority of the available pain-relieving drugs have monomodal mechanisms of analgesia, which necessitates combining drugs with non-redundant mechanisms of action in order to provide adequate pain relief and reduce the side effects from higher doses of individual drugs. In this regard, combining an oral o

A Feasibility Open Trial of a Brief Internet-Delivered Written Exposure Therapy for Worry.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive exposure, a treatment of choice for hypothetical fears, involves listening repeatedly to a recorded scenario of one's worst hypothetical fear. A major limitation, however, is that the script cannot be easily modified. AIMS: The current study assessed the feasibility of a brief guided internet-based written exposure therapy (iWET) for hypothetical fears, Mind at Peace. METHOD: Fifty-three adults presenting clinical levels of anxiety (GAD-7 ≥ 8) and worry (PSWQ ≥ 45) were recruited. A single group pre-test/post-test design including a 3-month follow-up was used. The dual contingencies of ethnoraciality: Status-context disparities in health information sources among sexual minorities.

Researchers often explore health (care) beliefs as a function of individual characteristics; yet, few consider the role of context in shaping both beliefs and the behaviors that are informed by them. As a sociopolitical construct, ethnoraciality provides a concerning source of bias in studies of health (care) beliefs because it inhabits both individual and contextual forms. This study examines whether the ethnoracial context of the residential area where sexual minorities live is associated with a particular health (care) belief - sources of trustworthy health information - and considers how e

Home-based color card screening for biliary atresia: the first steps for implementation of a nationwide newborn screening in Germany.

INTRODUCTION: Biliary atresia is a rare neonatal disease and the most common indication for pediatric liver transplantation. Kasai portoenterostomy is the initial treatment, aiming to prevent liver transplantation. Beyond age at Kasai, few prognostic factors are known. Multiple countries have established screening methods to reduce the age at Kasai and recent analysis shows significant better outcomes for screening cohorts. In 2016, we established a decentralized stool color card screening in Lower Saxony and we present our first 2 years of experiences. METHODS: In cooperation with a major Ge

Discrepancies Between Patient and Surgeon Expectations of Surgery for Sciatica: A Challenge for Informed Decision Making?

STUDY DESIGN: Qualitative study. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare the perceptions of patients and surgeons regarding the risks and benefits of lumbar decompressive surgery for sciatica following a consultation meeting. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Evidence regarding pain improvement in patients following lumbar decompressive surgery for sciatica is inconsistent. Given this inconsistency, patients choosing to undergo lumbar decompressive surgery must accept the risks associated with the surgery despite uncertainty regarding benefits. This raises questions as to the nature
