A longitudinal multilevel analysis of individual- and contextual-level predictors of cross-ethnic friendships in the UK.

Intergroup contact plays a central role in fostering positive intergroup attitudes; yet, factors promoting intergroup contact are less understood. Using three waves of data from a nationally representative UK household panel study (N = 18,807), we applied longitudinal multilevel models to examine how individual- and objective neighbourhood-level indicators jointly predict cross-ethnic friendships. At the individual level, higher openness and agreeableness, stronger neighbourhood belonging and a left-leaning political orientation were associated with more cross-ethnic friendships. At the contex

Differentiation of Self, Attachment Experiences, and Dyadic Adjustment: An APIM Approach With Spanish-Speaking Couples.

Romantic relationships are a cornerstone of adult life, profoundly influencing individuals' overall well-being. When these relationships become distressed, the consequences often extend beyond the couple, affecting families and the communities. Despite growing research on factors associated with couple relationships, much of the existing evidence is limited to the US and English-speaking populations, underscoring the need for studies in other contexts, such as Spanish-speaking couples. Our sample included 68 heterosexual, Spanish-speaking couples from Argentina, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico,

Associations among psychopathy, relationship satisfaction, and professional success in couples.

Individuals' psychopathic personality traits can have negative effects on the people around them. This research investigated whether the negativity of someone's psychopathic personality crosses over to their partner and then spills over into their partner's workplace. Using a nationally diverse community sample of 490 employed romantic couples from the New Zealand Attitudes and Values Study, cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses examined the associations among psychopathy facets (fearless dominance, self-centered impulsivity, and coldheartedness), relationship satisfaction, and professiona

Self-Other Mentalizing and Attachment Insecurity in the Dimensional Model of Personality Disorders: From Research to Clinical Practice.

Research on different aspects of mentalizing is essential for understanding the mechanisms underlying personality disorders (PDs) and for informing psychotherapy approaches, in which mentalizing is considered a key mechanism of change. This study aimed to explore whether self- and other-mentalizing, in interaction with attachment insecurity, differentially explain Criteria A (level of personality functioning) and B (maladaptive traits) of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders in the DSM-5. Our sample consisted of 109 participants (54% female, 41% male and 5% nonbinary). We used the S

Causal Effect of Psychopathy on Partner Well-Being: A National Longitudinal Study.

OBJECTIVE: Psychopathy is associated with harmful behaviors in romantic relationships, but its causal effect on partner well-being remains elusive. Across two studies, we apply robust observational methods for causal inference with national-scale dyadic data to examine how psychopathic personality and its facets affect partner well-being over time. METHOD: In Study 1 (three waves; N = 1012), we examined how increasing global psychopathy and its facets within individuals affects their partner's well-being one year later. In Study 2 (six waves; N = 1832), we investigated how increasing global p

Childhood emotional abuse and suicidal ideation intensity: The serial effects of rejection sensitivity, thwarted belongingness, and perceived burdensomeness.

BACKGROUND: Rejection sensitivity (hypersensitivity and reactivity to threats of rejection due to previous rejection experiences) could provide insight into the role of childhood emotional abuse and associated interpersonal risk factors in the development of suicide ideation (SI). OBJECTIVE: The current study examined SI among at-risk young adults using an integrated model of rejection sensitivity and suicide risk, as conceptualized by the interpersonal theory of suicide. We hypothesized that childhood emotional abuse would be indirectly prospectively associated with increases in SI intensity

'It's quite difficult to put Autistic relationships in a box': A qualitative exploration of romantic relationships in gender and sexually diverse Autistic adults.

Autistic people enjoy friendships and sexual and romantic relationships. Many Autistic people are also part of a gender or sexual minority, yet gender and sexual minorities are often under-represented in autism research. The current study asked, 'How do gender and sexually diverse Autistic adults experience and perceive romantic relationships?' Sixteen gender and/or sexual minority Autistic adults took part in semi-structured interviews. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. Four main themes were identified from the interview data: (1) 'It's Quite Difficult to Put A

The impact of loneliness and social relationship dissatisfaction on clinical and functional outcomes in Dutch mental health service users.

The relationship between reduced social connectedness and mental health outcomes is increasingly acknowledged. Yet, relatively little is known about how two crucial subjective aspects of social disconnectedness - loneliness and social relationship dissatisfaction (SRD) - are related to clinical and functional recovery. This cohort study aimed to investigate the associations of loneliness and SRD with various mental health outcomes among 15,512 outpatients from a Dutch mental health service. Demographics and data on loneliness, SRD, symptomatic distress, suicidal ideation, and role functioning,

Interpersonal Violence Against Indigenous Sámi and Non-Sámi Populations in Arctic Sweden and the Mediating Effect of Historical Losses and Discrimination.

The prevalence of interpersonal violence has been reported at higher levels among Indigenous than non-Indigenous populations worldwide, but has not been thoroughly investigated among the Sámi population in Sweden. The aims of this study were to investigate: (1) the prevalence of emotional, physical, and sexual violence and violence by intimate partners, family members, acquaintances, and strangers among participants identifying as Sámi or Swedish, (2) whether reporting experiences of historical losses and discrimination mediated the anticipated association between identifying as Sámi and repor

"Straight Sex is Complicated Enough!": The Lived Experiences of Autistics Who are Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Asexual, or Other Sexual Orientations.

Autistics are more likely than neurotypicals to be gay, lesbian, bisexual, asexual, and other sexual orientations. Autistics and sexual minorities represent populations at high risk for depression, anxiety, and suicidality. Little is known about the experiences of individuals living at this intersection. In this phenomenology, 67 individuals who identified as autistic sexual minorities participated in online interviews to describe the meaning of their experiences. Six themes emerged, including: self-acceptance is a journey; autistic traits complicate self-identification of sexual orientation;
