We report an autopsied case of a 59-year-old woman with acute septic shock from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection during combination therapy with pegylated-interferon-α-2b (PEG-IFNα-2b) and ribavirin. She underwent aortic graft replacement for the treatment of a dissecting aneurysm. We observed her latent infection closely for over a year following the operation. The clinical and laboratory examinations did not show any sign of infection. She then underwent PEG-IFNα-2b/ribavirin combination therapy. In her 17th week of therapy, she suddenly complained of high fever f

It is proposed that the chronic asymptomatic carrier state produced by Babesia canis infection could make dogs more resistant against subsequent infections. This suggests that treatment with imidocarb dipropionate, which removes the organism, can make dogs more susceptible to reinfection in a short period of time. Ten male and female dogs of approximately 4-5 months of age were inoculated with B. canis. Half of them received treatment with imidocarb dipropionate (7 mg/kg) on days 15 and 27 post-infection and the other half were untreated. All the animals were examined using clinical and labora

Our laboratory has demonstrated in preliminary experiments that UVB exposure using the Kromayer lamp can induce increased numbers of Trichinella spiralis larvae in carcasses of infected Wistar rats, without affecting specific antibody titers to this parasite. In this study, orally T. spiralis-infected Wistar rats were exposed to suberythemal doses of UVB radiation using FS40 lamps during different time periods before or after infection. A significant increase in the number of T. spiralis larvae was found in the carcasses of rats that were UVB irradiated daily for 7 consecutive days in the seco

OBJECTIVE: To document the emergence of new foci of Mycobacterium ulcerans infection (Bairnsdale ulcer) in Victoria.
METHODS: From data kept by one of us (JAH) and records from the Mycobacterium Reference Laboratory, Fairfield Hospital, we reviewed cases of M. ulcerans infection in Victoria between 1980 and 1995, and identified those apparently acquired outside the east Gippsland endemic region. A case was defined as a person with a lesion suggestive of M. ulcerans infection, from which the organism had been cultured or, in the absence of culture information, from which a histological specime

Infection of the embryo and foetus remains a major public health problem. It has been widely accepted as a major cause of spontaneous abortion, premature birth and morbidity and mortality of the newborn. Furthermore, many studies stress the role of chorioamnionitis in the onset of premature labor. We have found a significant incidence of chorioamnionitis in placentas examined in our laboratory, but we do not know the real prevalence of intra amniotic infection and the magnitude of its consequences. Furthermore, there is no data concerning the micro-organisms that can act as pathogens in our pa

OBJECTIVE: Meningitis is one of the leading causes of death among patients living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in sub-Saharan Africa. Based on clinical presentations alone, the different types of meningitis may not be distinguished from each other, consequently accurate laboratory diagnosis is extremely essential. Viruses such as Enteroviruses (EV), Mumps virus (MuV) and Herpes Simplex Virus-1 (HSV-1) are implicated in cases of meningitis. We sought to detect and characterize viral aetiologies of meningitis among HIV-infected adults with the use of molecular tools.
RESULTS: As

Bloodstream invasion is an important event in the pathogenesis of the more serious manifestations of Lyme disease. The number of spirochetes in the blood of infected patients, however, has not been determined, and, therefore, it is unknown whether the number of spirochetes can be correlated with particular clinical or laboratory features. This study was designed to measure the level of Borrelia burgdorferi in the plasma of Lyme disease patients and correlate these levels with selected clinical and laboratory findings. Nested and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was employed to det

Since 2003, Connecticut laboratories have reported Gram-positive rod (GPR) isolates detected within 32 h of inoculation from blood or cerebrospinal fluid. The objectives were to rapidly identify inhalational anthrax and unusual Clostridium spp. infections, and to establish round-the-clock laboratory reporting of potential indicators of bioterrorism. From 2003 to 2006, Connecticut's GPR surveillance system identified 1134 isolates, including 657 Bacillus spp. (none B. anthracis) and 241 Clostridium spp. Reporting completeness and timeliness improved to 93% and 92%, respectively. Baseline rates

All the human and animal laboratory reports of zoonoses sent to Health Protection Scotland between 1993 and 2002 were identified. There were 24,946 reports from veterinary laboratories, and 94,718 (20 per cent) of the 468,214 reports from medical laboratories were considered to be zoonotic. The most common reports of zoonoses from people were Campylobacter, Salmonella, Cryptosporidium and Giardia species and Escherichia coli o157. The most common reports of zoonoses from animals were Salmonella, Cryptosporidium, Chlamydia and Campylobacter species and Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis. For

In support of Operation Restore Hope, the United States military established a diagnostic laboratory for infectious diseases, the Joint Forward Laboratory, in Mogadishu, Somalia. Because sporadic hepatitis due to unknown causes was a frequent problem, staff members of the Joint Forward Laboratory evaluated 31 Somalis, five displaced Ethiopians, and three Western relief workers who had acute clinical hepatitis. Patients lived in multiple locations in Somalia--Mogadishu, Baidoa, and Merca--and became ill between December 1992 and February 1993. IgM antibody to hepatitis A virus was found in one

The main purpose in the diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is to rapidly and accurately identify people with HIV infection. It is recommended that samples that are repeatedly reactive should be verified/supported according to the classical algorithms of international and national guidelines. The recombinant "line immunoassay test (LIA)", which has been used for many years, is studied with the accumulated samples to be cost and labor-effective. In this study, the supplemental recombinant HIV 1/2 LIA (INNO-LIA®, Fujirebio, Ghent, Belgium) used to confirm and differentiate

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most important bacterial pathogens in clinical practice and a major diagnostic focus for the routine microbiology laboratory. It is carried as a harmless commensal in up to two-thirds of the population at any one time predominantly not only in the anterior nares, but also in multiple other sites such as the groin, axilla, throat, perineum, vagina and rectum. It colonizes skin breach sites, such as ulcers and wounds, and causes superficial and deep skin and soft tissue infections and life-threatening deep seated infections particularly endocarditis and osteom

BACKGROUND: Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects, which include brain and eye abnormalities. The clinical importance of detection of Zika virus RNA in amniotic fluid is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe patterns of Zika virus RNA testing of amniotic fluid relative to other clinical specimens and to examine the association between Zika virus detection in amniotic fluid and Zika-associated birth defects. Our null hypothesis was that Zika virus detection in amniotic fluid was not associated with Zika-associated birth defects.

In 2007, a Finnish traveler was infected in Peninsular Malaysia with Plasmodium knowlesi, a parasite that usually causes malaria in monkeys. P. knowlesi has established itself as the fifth Plasmodium species that can cause human malaria. The disease is potentially life-threatening in humans; clinicians and laboratory personnel should become more aware of this pathogen in travelers.

This paper presents a report on a child with Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome. The clinical picture and laboratory findings are characteristic of this disease. The prevailing symptoms have included recurrent respiratory and alimentary tract infections, seborrhic dermatitis-type skin lesions, and thrombocytopenia. Humoral and cellular immunological disturbances have been noted, and the pedigree pattern is very characteristic.

INTRODUCTION: Tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA) is a documented and severe complication of untreated pelvic inflammatory disease. It is a life threatening infection that involves the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, and or any other adjacent tissue with a significant risk of infertility and pelvic adhesions. It is most commonly unilateral.
CASE SUMMARY: This report presents a rare and unusual presentation of a huge bilateral tubo-ovarian abscess in a young woman, who presented with recurrent abdominal pain with no clear signs of infection. Clinical and laboratory findings were suggestive of a complex o

Concurrent malaria and arbovirus infections pose significant public health challenges in tropical and subtropical regions, demanding innovative control strategies. Here, we describe a strategy that employs multifunctional engineered symbiotic bacteria to suppress concurrent transmission of malaria parasites, dengue, and Zika viruses by various vector mosquitoes. The symbiotic bacterium Serratia AS1, which efficiently spreads through Anopheles and Aedes populations, is engineered to simultaneously produce anti-Plasmodium and anti-arbovirus effector proteins controlled by a selected blood-induce
