Accessory auricle and polyotia are rare congenital anomalies of the external ear resulting from abnormal development of the auricular hillocks. Polyotia represents a severe variant in which the accessory structure resembles an additional pinna. We report a paediatric case of unilateral accessory auricle in a child presenting to the Department of Pediatrics at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. Clinical evaluation revealed no associated systemic abnormalities. The patient underwent surgical excision by the Department of ENT with satisfactory aesthetic outcome and no postoperative complicatio

INTRODUCTION: Bladder urothelial carcinoma is highly heterogeneous and is prone to recurrence. There are many types of drugs for intravesical instillation, and there is an urgent need for reliable tumor models for individualized treatment strategies. Patient-derived organoids (PDOs) are efficient and accurate neotype tumor models that can compensate for the deficiencies of traditional tumor models.
METHODS: From September 2023 to February 2024, bladder cancer tissues were collected from surgical resections in the Department of Urology, Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University. We

BACKGROUND: Acne fulminans is a rare and extreme form of inflammatory acne, which is characterized by the sudden onset of painful, ulcerative nodules and systemic symptoms such as fever, malaise, arthralgia, leukocytosis, and potential scarring.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 16-year-old white European (Polish) female patient with acne vulgaris that progressively worsened despite treatment with oral isotretinoin, estrogens, topical antibiotics, and corticosteroids. She subsequently developed systemic complications, including fever, malaise, severe musculoskeletal pain, and tachyc

Individuals with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) are at risk of progressing to active tuberculosis (TB), which remains a significant cause of death globally. Although various antiTB medications-rifampin and isoniazid-exist for treating for both LTBI and active TB, pharmacovigilance studies evaluating their adverse effects are especially scare for LTBI. Given the continued status of South Korea as having the highest TB incidence among Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries, this study examines drug-related adverse events (AEs) and identifies novel signals associate

Neurological complications are observed less frequently with primary Sjögren syndrome (SS). The central nervous system (CNS) has seldom been shown to exhibit symptoms of SS, making the diagnosis of SS with neurological involvement difficult. We present a rare case scenario in which a young 23-year-old male presenting with an acute history of fever, headache, vomiting, altered sensorium, and seizures was admitted and diagnosed as a sub-acute infarct in the right frontal-parietal-temporal lobes on a computed tomography (CT) scan. Upon further examination, laboratory investigations were suggestiv

Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) is a systemic inflammatory disease characterized by rash, arthritis, and persistent spiking fever. The diagnosis and treatment of AOSD are challenging due to the lack of specific diagnostic criteria and little evidence of effective treatments. Here, we reported a case of an 18-year-old woman with a fever of unknown origin (FUO), evanescent rash (without the typical "salmon-pink" color), and systemic lymphadenopathy. Laboratory tests at hospital admission revealed marked hyperferritinemia of 12,100 ng/mL. AOSD was subsequently suspected. Additional anti-nuclea

INTRODUCTION: Since the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, healthcare systems have focused their efforts into finding a treatment to avoid the fatal outcomes of severe acute respiratory syndrome due to coronavirus‑2 (SARS-CoV-2). Benefits and risks of systemic treatments remain unclear, with multiple clinical trials still ongoing. Radiotherapy could play a role in reducing the inflammatory response in the lungs and relieve life-threatening symptoms.
METHODS: We designed a prospective study of Ultra-Low Doses of Therapy with Radiation Applied to COVID-19 (ULTRA-COVID) fo

Compared with adults who are admitted to general medical-surgical wards, women who are admitted to labor and delivery services are at much lower risk of experiencing unexpected critical illness. Nonetheless, critical illness and other complications that put either the mother or fetus at risk do occur. One potential approach to prevention is to use automated early warning systems, such as those used for nonpregnant adults. Predictive models that use data extracted in real time from electronic records constitute the cornerstone of such systems. This article addresses several issues that are invo

Computed tomography (CT) is used to diagnose many emergent medical conditions, including stroke and traumatic brain injuries. Unfortunately, the size, weight, and expense of CT systems make them largely inaccessible for patients outside of major hospitals. We have designed a module containing multiple miniature x-ray sources that could allow for CT systems to be significantly lighter, smaller, and cheaper, and to operate without any moving parts. We have developed a novel photocathode-based x-ray source, created by depositing a thin film of magnesium on an electron multiplier. When illuminated

Bacterial infections of the central nervous system present as a medical emergency, thus requiring rapid diagnosis and immediate treatment. The most prevalent bacterial infections seen in the intensive care unit can be summarized as acute bacterial meningitis, subdural empyema, intracerebral abscess, and ventriculitis, which all commonly involve the brain parenchyma. The infections can either be community-acquired or hospital-acquired, e.g., after neurosurgical intervention, as a complication of severe neurotrauma or related to indwelling cerebrospinal fluid drains. Community-acquired bacterial

AIM: Autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) frequently coexists with other systemic autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Due to the overlapping and nonspecific nature of symptoms, it is difficult to clinically uncover thyroidal illnesses in RA patients. This study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction including the presence of anti-thyroid peroxidase (antiTPO) autoantibodies in patients with RA and to analyze symptomatology of thyroid dysfunction in patients diagnosed with RA.
METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional, pr

Because of similarities of the musculoskeletal, central nervous system, and renal manifestations in both diseases, diagnosing systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in sickle cell disease (SCD) patients can be difficult to establish. Although Sickle Cell Trait (SCT) is still considered a benign form of SCD, its impact on kidney injury and other renal manifestations is well recognized in the literature. In this case report, we look at the challenges that develop when diagnosing patients with a concurrence of both diseases and the importance of early recognition and treatment of lupus nephritis in S

Massive hemoptysis is a life-threatening complication of respiratory disease. It is an emergency requiring immediate medical attention. A 58 year-old woman with bronchiectasis was admitted to the hospital following episodes of massive hemoptysis. Chest CT scan and bronchoscopy did not reveal any endobronchial lesion and bronchial artery angiography and embolization were performed successfully. Despite successful embolization, her hemoptysis recurred and the patient underwent angiography for the 2(nd) time; which showed normal left bronchial artery and occluded right intercostobronchial artery.

In Lewy body disease, Lewy pathology (LP: the accumulation of α-synuclein in neuronal perikarya and processes as Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites and dots, respectively) is observed in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Previous autopsy or biopsy studies of individuals with Lewy body diseases (LBDs) indicated that LP could be observed in the peripheral nerves of the gastrointestinal (GI) systems. The aim of this study is to clarify whether examination of GI and biliary surgical specimens would be useful for diagnosing LBD. We analyzed eight patients diagnosed clinically with LBD and with

Heart failure is a dreaded complication of trastuzumab therapy in women with breast cancer overexpressing the human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER)-2. Experimental studies have pointed out that the HER-2 signaling pathway is important in the adaptation to high afterload conditions and its inactivation leads to cardiac decompensation. Herein, we report on 2 patients with breast cancer who were receiving trastuzumab monotherapy and required hospital admission for new-onset heart failure. This occurred at a time of unprecedented blood pressure elevations, in one case due to cessation of an

The new Blood Law for Self-sufficiency, Stable Supply of Safe Blood Products and Other Transfusion-related Rules was enacted in July 2003. In terms of the safety of blood products, improvement of screening tests and the introduction of the viral nucleic acid amplification test to shorten the so-called window period have markedly reduced the incidence of blood-borne virus transmission, although they cannot completely protect against transfusion-associated adverse reactions. Even with increasing blood safety, there remains an iatrogenic risk of ABO-mismatched transfusions without proper manageme

The article deals with the development of institutionalized care and its overall discourse concerning the elderly sick people in Germany from 1924 to 1961. This period of time embraces an ambivalent process of modernization that falls short of any unilinear success story. Neither politics nor the medical sciences had the impact to make the nursing homes catch up with the advanced hospitals. They became low-grade institutions within the national welfare system. These homes evolved from poor-law houses with no specialized care whatsoever. The chronically ill and infirm old people emerged during
