[The workers health and the Tropical Oil Company. Barrancabermeja, 1916-1940].

This article analyses the health of workers engaged in oil exploration and exploitation in Colombia during the time of the so-called De Mares concession from 1916 to 1940. Periodisation was constructed which sought to account for yellow fever and tropical diseases within the sanitary situation related to oil exploration and exploitation during this period and region and how it became displaced from its central position by accidentally. The initial period was characterised by the lack of protection to which the workers were subjected at the start of oil-producing activities between 1916 and 192

Mortality from lung cancer among copper miners.

A cohort mortality study of lung cancer in 7088 copper miners was made from 1 January 1969 to 31 December 1988. There was an excess of deaths from lung cancer in the copper miners. The standardised mortality ratio (SMR) was 147 (p < 0.01). The SMR increased with calendar period. There was a higher risk of deaths from lung cancer in the miners employed in the 1950s. Age at the start of exposure had no effect on the risk of lung cancer. The risk of death from lung cancer increased with the duration of exposure and the time since first exposure. The SMR for lung cancer was 173 in underground mine

Iron homeostasis landscape informs patient survival and neoadjuvant chemotherapy response in cancer.

BACKGROUND: Cancer cells frequently alter iron metabolism by increasing uptake or decreasing export, promoting oncogenesis and proliferation. However, the quantitative relationship between iron homeostasis and cancer remains underexplored. METHODS AND RESULTS: We simplified these alterations into measurable changes in the expression levels of iron transport-related genes. We investigated the expression of iron transport-related genes by comparing genomic data of 478 human cancer cell lines to 105 normal tissue samples, as well as analyzing clinically paired 6903 tumor to 709 normal samples. TASC: a time-aware sequence clustering framework with uncertainty quantification for electronic health record trajectories.

Longitudinal electronic health record (EHR) trajectories are highly heterogeneous, sparse, and irregular, making unsupervised temporal pattern discovery and uncertainty quantification challenging. We developed a Time-Aware Sequence Clustering (TASC) framework that integrates temporal spacing, clinical semantic similarity, and probabilistic subtype characterization to identify longitudinal trajectory patterns from EHR data. We demonstrate the framework using pre-surgical musculoskeletal care trajectories preceding total knee replacement (TKR). As a proof-of-concept application, we applied TASC

Automatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma grading framework using histopathological images via artificial intelligence: a benchmarking study.

BACKGROUND: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a common malignant tumor of the urinary system. Postoperative patients face the risk of recurrence or metastasis, and those who experience disease progression often have a poor prognosis. Therefore, investigating prognostic factors for RCC is crucial for guiding individualized patient treatment. Current studies demonstrate that RCC grading is significantly associated with prognosis, but pathological grading requires high expertise while being time-consuming. METHODS: Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown significant advantages in tumor tissue

Machine learning-based assessment of the healthy human gut mycobiota landscape using ITS1 DNA metabarcoding data.

The human gut microbiome plays a critical role in maintaining host health and homeostasis, and current literature suggests a bidirectional relationship between microbiome ecology and host well-being. DNA metabarcoding has emerged as a powerful tool for investigating microbiome imbalances (i.e., dysbiosis). While the prokaryotic microbiome has been extensively studied, the fungal counterpart - or mycobiome - remains largely unexplored, despite its recognized role from the perinatal stage onward. Here, we present a comprehensive survey based on DNA metabarcoding analysis of approximately 1,500 p

Genotype subtyping approach to identify unnoticed variants in diseases from GWAS data.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) are vital for investigating single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in diseases. Comparisons of detected SNPs for the same disease between populations often reveal gaps, which are attributed to factors such as population, sample size, and rare variants, among others. We propose a method referred to as ‘Genotype Subtyping’ that is based on a classical GWAS to identify seed SNPs; each SNP stratifies cases and controls by its genotype, followed by a sub-GWAS per genotype while keeping the additional number of statistical tests low. We evaluated four databases

TENTACLES: a consensus machine learning tool for robust biomarker discovery in heterogeneous data.

BACKGROUND: Transcriptomic biomarker discovery often fails to produce reproducible gene signatures across independent cohorts due to model-specific biases and dataset heterogeneity. While single-algorithm approaches may perform well on training data, they frequently fail to generalize effectively. Ensemble methods have proven effective in general machine learning applications, yet their systematic integration for consensus-based feature prioritization remains underexplored in transcriptomics. RESULTS: We developed TENTACLES (Transcriptomic Exploration Tool through Aggregation of Classifiers),

An online non-radiographic osteoporosis prediction calculator constructed using interpretable machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis represents a major health challenge in aging populations, yet its diagnosis largely depends on dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), which is both costly and radiation-based. This study aimed to develop a practical, non-radiographic prediction model for osteoporosis using interpretable machine learning techniques and to implement it as an accessible online calculator for rapid clinical and community screening. METHODS: Data were derived from the 2008–2011 waves of the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Individuals with over 30% missing

DAG-VAERL: a novel causal inference method for building causal gene regulatory networks.

BACKGROUND: Causal discovery methods provide a powerful tool for uncovering the causal relationships between lncRNAs and target genes in gene regulations. In many causal inference and structure learning tasks, learning the Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) structure from data is a challenging problem. Traditional DAG learning methods often rely on heuristic searches or strict constraints, which fail to effectively handle complex nonlinear relationships and discrete data. METHODS: To address this, we propose a novel deep generative model-DAG-VAERL, which combines Graph Neural Networks (GNN) as well

Explainable AI-driven graph-based neural networks for mucopolysaccharidoses diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of rare lysosomal storage disorders caused by enzyme deficiencies leading to the accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). Their clinical heterogeneity and low prevalence contribute to delayed and often missed diagnoses. Early detection is critical for improving treatment outcomes. This study investigates the utility of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) for diagnosing MPS using real-world electronic health records (EHRs). METHODS: Diagnostic features were extracted for 106 subjects (37 MPS and 69 controls) from the SEHA health system in Abu Dhabi

Automatic extraction of mesenchymal stromal cells from single-cell RNA-sequencing data of human dental pulp.

BACKGROUND: Human dental pulp is a complex tissue composed of diverse cell types, including mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), which are crucial for tissue repair and regeneration. Although single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data from human dental pulp have accumulated in recent years, MSC identification relies on manual verification of marker genes after clustering, which limits analytical efficiency and scalability. The choice of clustering resolution is determined empirically, potentially leading to under- or over-segmentation of MSCs or their mixing with other cell types. The objective

Multi-omics analysis of genetic drivers linking aortic stenosis and left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Aortic stenosis (AS) and left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) often coexist in heart failure (HF), but the mechanisms linking them remain unclear. While AS increases afterload and promotes myocardial stiffening, emerging AI-based evidence suggests LVDD can precede the development of AS or progress simultaneously, indicating shared upstream mechanobiological and inflammatory drivers. This study explores the genetic contributors connecting AS and LVDD to identify early molecular markers and convergent pathways in HF. METHOD: We analyzed Whole Genome Sequence (WGS) and RNA-s

Learning the therapeutic targets of acute myeloid leukemia through multiscale human interactome network and community analysis.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is caused by proliferation of mutated myeloid progenitor cells. The standard chemotherapy regimen does not efficiently cause remission as there is a high relapse rate. Resistance acquired by leukemic stem cells is suggested to be one of the root causes of relapse. Therefore, there is an urgency to develop new drugs for therapy. Repurposing approved drugs for AML can provide a cost-friendly, time-efficient, and affordable alternative. The multiscale interactome network is a computational tool that can identify potential therapeutic candidates by comparing mechanisms
