The mental health of Medicare beneficiaries with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

PURPOSE: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, there was a tremendous increase in adverse mental and behavioral health symptoms. People with disabilities who are Medicare beneficiaries (under 65) are a vulnerable population, frequently having multiple chronic conditions, and facing a number of social disadvantages, even before the pandemic. As a result of the lack of attention drawn to the pandemic needs and experiences of people with disabilities, as well as the increased needs of Medicare beneficiaries with disabilities, the aim of this study is to examine the mental healt…

Association Between Testosterone Treatment and Risk of Incident Cardiovascular Events Among US Male Veterans With Low Testosterone Levels and Multiple Medical Comorbidities.

Background Testosterone treatment is common in men, although risks for major cardiovascular events are unclear. Methods and Results A study was conducted in US male veterans, aged ≥40 years, with low serum testosterone and multiple medical comorbidities and without history of myocardial infarction, stroke, venous thromboembolism, prostate cancer, or testosterone treatment in the prior year. For the primary outcome, we examined if testosterone treatment was associated with a composite cardiovascular outcome (incident myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, or venous thromboembolism). Testostero

Altered Brain Network Connectivity Underlies Persistent Post-Traumatic Headache following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in Youth.

Post-traumatic headaches (PTHs) are associated with mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) and may predict the persistence of concussion symptoms. Altered brain networks implicated in brain injury and the affective components of headache-related pain may underlie the resolution of PTH. This is a hypothesis-generating investigation to evaluate the extent to which pain symptom reporting and functional brain changes are different in a cohort of young mTBI patients with resolved (PTH-R) and persistent (PTH-P) post-traumatic headache symptoms relative to healthy controls. This was a cross-sectional i

Absence of association between 2019-20 influenza vaccination and COVID-19: Results of the European I-MOVE-COVID-19 primary care project, March-August 2020.

BACKGROUND: Claims of influenza vaccination increasing COVID-19 risk are circulating. Within the I-MOVE-COVID-19 primary care multicentre study, we measured the association between 2019-20 influenza vaccination and COVID-19. METHODS: We conducted a multicentre test-negative case-control study at primary care level, in study sites in five European countries, from March to August 2020. Patients presenting with acute respiratory infection were swabbed, with demographic, 2019-20 influenza vaccination and clinical information documented. Using logistic regression, we measured the adjusted odds rat

Urinary monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 associated with calcium oxalate crystallization in patients with primary hyperoxaluria.

BACKGROUND: Patients with primary hyperoxaluria (PH) often develop kidney stones and chronic kidney disease. Noninvasive urine markers reflective of active kidney injury could be useful to gauge the effectiveness of ongoing treatments. METHODS: A panel of biomarkers that reflect different nephron sites and potential mechanisms of injury (clusterin, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), 8-isoprostane (8IP), monocyte-chemoattractant protein 1(MCP-1), liver-type fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP), heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP), and osteopontin (OPN)) were measured

Exercise capacity and ventilation inhomogeneity in cystic fibrosis: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Lung clearance index (LCI2.5 ) is a marker of overall lung ventilation inhomogeneity and has proven to be able to detect early peripheral damage in subjects with cystic fibrosis (CF), with greater sensitivity than conventional spirometry. Combining its sensitivity with the output of an incremental exercise testing, we hypothesized that any sign of ventilation inhomogeneity in subjects without severe airflow obstruction and with a normal exercise tolerance could be relevant for the CF team, tracking early lung disease and potential exercise limiting factors. METHODS: Patients with

Evaluating the Effects of Cerebrospinal Fluid Protein Content on the Performance of Differential Pressure Valves and Antisiphon Devices Using a Novel Benchtop Shunting Model.

BACKGROUND: Hydrocephalus is managed by surgically implanting flow-diversion technologies such as differential pressure valves and antisiphoning devices; however, such hardware is prone to failure. Extensive research has tested them in flow-controlled settings using saline or de-aerated water, yet little has been done to validate their performance in a setting recreating physiologically relevant parameters, including intracranial pressures, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein content, and body position. OBJECTIVE: To more accurately chart the episodic drainage characteristics of flow-diversion

Veterans' assignment to single-site versus scattered-site permanent supportive housing.

To address homelessness among Veterans, a growing proportion of permanent supportive housing units supported by the U.S. Departments of Housing and Urban Development and Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program are allocated to programs where multiple Veterans with a history of homelessness live in a particular building, referred to as single-site housing. This mixed-methods study-including administrative data from Veterans who moved into HUD-VASH housing and qualitative data from focus groups with services providers at 10 single-site programs-describes the characteristics and ne

Post-bariatric surgery hidradenitis suppurativa: a new patient subset associated with malabsorption and micronutritional deficiencies.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery (BS) represents the most effective treatment for morbid obesity and its related complications, potentially ameliorating chronic comorbid inflammatory skin conditions, such as psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). Weight-loss interventions are strongly encouraged in patients with HS, but the resulting effect on the course of the disease has been poorly reported. AIM: To describe the effect of BS-associated weight-loss on the course of HS. METHODS: This was a retrospective, descriptive study of a hospital-based patient cohort with HS in order to investigate

Brain temperature: from physiology and pharmacology to neuropathology.

Brain temperature is a physiologic parameter that depends on metabolism-related intracerebral heat production and heat loss by cerebral circulation to the rest of the body and then to the external environment. Despite the importance of temperature as a metabolism-related parameter and a factor affecting neural activity and function, it is generally believed that brain temperature is a tightly regulated and highly stable homeostatic parameter. To challenge this view, we present data on fluctuations in brain temperature occurring in rats following exposure to various arousing stimuli and during
