Persistent neuromuscular dysfunction in long COVID: A quantitative and single fiber EMG follow-up study.

OBJECTIVE: Persistent symptoms after SARS CoV-2 infection, often designated as "long COVID", continue to be an ongoing health issue. Previously, we reported electromyography (EMG) and single fiber EMG (SFEMG) abnormalities in long COVID. This study aimed to assess the long-term neuromuscular manifestations of long COVID. METHODS: In this follow-up study, fifty patients (39 females and 11 males, mean age at baseline: 48.1 ± 9.3 years) with long COVID showing myopathic (EMG and/or abnormal SFEMG at diagnosis were re-evaluated. The disease duration was 1.2 ± 0.6 years at baseline. The mean follo

Tai Chi Postures and Joint Health: A Comparative Study of Professional and Amateur Practitioners.

This study aimed to compare the knee and ankle joint load characteristics of high and low Tai Chi postures, focusing on three typical Tai Chi movements: Wild Horse Mane (WHM), Repulse Monkey (RM), and Wave Hand in Cloud (WHC). It further explored how different postures affect lower limb loading in practitioners with varying skill levels to provide optimal guidance for Tai Chi practice. A total of 26 male participants were enrolled, divided into the professional group (PG, n = 13) and the interest group (IG, n = 15). A three-dimensional (3D) high-speed motion capture system was employed to reco

One session of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation induces mild and transient analgesic effects among female individuals with painful temporomandibular disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are characterised by chronic pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and masticatory muscles. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has emerged as a potential non-invasive treatment for chronic pain; however, its effectiveness in individuals with TMD has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to evaluate the immediate and sustained (over seven consecutive days) effects of a single session of active rTMS compared to sham stimulation on pain intensity and pain unpleasantness in individuals with TMD. METHODS: A randomised, doub

The medial forearm fascia and lateral forearm fascia contribute to overhead elbow extension in displaced olecranon fractures: a biomechanical study.

BACKGROUND: In nonoperative management of displaced olecranon fractures, patients are able to maintain overhead extension despite a persistent nonunion. It has been hypothesized that this is feasible because of an intact lateral cubital retinaculum. The purpose of this biomechanical study was to determine the contribution of the medial and lateral cubital retinacula to overhead extension in the setting of a displaced olecranon fracture. METHODS: Eight fresh-frozen cadaveric upper-extremity specimens were used in this study. The triceps muscle was loaded through a pulley system operated by an

Mechanobehavior and Ontogenesis of the Temporomandibular Joint.

Craniofacial secondary cartilages of the mandibular condyle and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) eminence grow in response to the local mechanical environment. The intervening TMJ disc distributes normal loads over the cartilage surfaces and provides lubrication. A better understanding of the mechanical environment and its effects on growth, development, and degeneration of the TMJ may improve treatments aimed at modifying jaw growth and preventing or reversing degenerative joint disease (DJD). This review highlights data recorded in human subjects and from computer modeling that elucidate the ro

The farrier's work environment.

The horse industry in Sweden has rapidly expanded in recent years. This increasing number of horses implies a greater need for more farriers. Shoeing a horse is hard physical work, and includes awkward work postures and repetitive movements. It is well known that hard physical work increases the risk of injuries and musculoskeletal problems. The risk is especially high for musculoskeletal disorders when certain movements are constantly repeated. Heavy or repeated unilateral loads lead to considerable stress on the muscles, which can lead to rupture and fatigue that can cause long term problems

Plantar pressure changes after long-distance walking.

PURPOSE: The popularity of long-distance walking (LDW) has increased in the last decades. However, the effects of LDW on plantar pressure distribution and foot complaints, in particular, after several days of walking, have not been studied. METHODS: We obtained the plantar pressure data of 62 subjects who had no history of foot complaints and who walked a total distance of 199.8 km for men (n = 30) and 161.5 km for women (n = 32) during four consecutive days. Plantar pressure was measured each day after the finish (posttests I–IV) and compared with the baseline plantar pressure data, which wa

Impaired jaw function and eating difficulties in whiplash-associated disorders.

Eating requires mouth opening, biting, chewing and swallowing and should be performed without dysfunction or pain. Previous studies have shown that jaw opening-closing movements are the result of coordinated activation of both jaw and neck muscles, with simultaneous movements in the temporomandibular, atlanto-occipital and cervical spine joints. Consequently, it can be assumed that pain or dysfunction in any of the three joint systems involved could impair jaw activities. In fact, recent findings support this hypothesis by showing an association between neck injury and reduced amplitudes, spee

Dysphonia and laryngopharyngeal reflux.

The correlation between laryngo-pharyngeal reflux and dysphonia has been evaluated in patients without significant laryngoscopic findings and without vocal misuse. Studies were performed, using a validated questionnaire on typical reflux symptoms as well as instrumental means, e.g. videolaryngoscopy, multi-electrode 24-hr oesophageal pH monitoring, vocal acoustic analysis, gastro-oesophagoscopy, on 62 patients (51 male, 11 female) with dysphonia for > or = 3 months, selected from 350) consecutive patients presenting with voice disorders. Standard criteria were: absence of laryngeal neoformatio

Predictors of outcome following venlafaxine extended-release treatment of DSM-IV generalized anxiety disorder: a pooled analysis of short- and long-term studies.

This pooled analysis evaluated potential predictive abilities of baseline demographic factors, psychiatric history, and DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for short- and long-term outcome after treatment with venlafaxine extended release (XR) or placebo in patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Pooled data from 1,839 patients in five placebo-controlled studies of venlafaxine XR for GAD were analyzed by logistic regression. Odds ratios (ORs) were used to quantify pretreatment factors' abilities to predict response (50% reduction, baseline Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety [HAM-A] severity) a

Perinatal superior sagittal sinus venous thrombosis.

The initial clinical findings that form the basis for the diagnosis of puerperal SSSVT are frequently quite subtle. It is essential to a favorable outcome that clinicians maintain a high index of suspicion in relation to physical complaints of puerperal women. Meticulous, comprehensive, multisystem assessment is indicated to explore fully the presentation of headache, weakness, or other subjective data when discovered. Headaches can easily be attributed to a multitude of factors associated with birth. These include fatigue, stress, complications of anesthesia, fluid and electrolyte imbalances,

Complex phenotypes associated with STIM1 mutations in both coiled coil and EF-hand domains.

Dominant mutations in STIM1 are a cause of three allelic conditions: tubular aggregate myopathy, Stormorken syndrome (a complex phenotype including myopathy, hyposplenism, hypocalcaemia and bleeding diathesis), and a platelet dysfunction disorder, York platelet syndrome. Previous reports have suggested a genotype-phenotype correlation with mutations in the N-terminal EF-hand domain associated with tubular aggregate myopathy, and a common mutation at p.R304W in a coiled coil domain associated with Stormorken syndrome. In this study individuals with STIM1 variants were identified by exome sequen

Identification of PTGS2 as a genetically supported protective biomarker and potential therapeutic target in myasthenia gravis.

BACKGROUND: Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease that damages the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), reduces the transmission of nerve impulses to muscles, and thus causes fluctuating muscle weakness and fatigue. The main types of MG are autoantibodies that target necessary components of the postsynaptic membrane, such as acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) and muscle-specific kinase (MuSK). The above immune-mediated alterations disrupt synaptic transmission and reduce muscle contraction. Study the molecular and cellular mechanisms of MG to find genes that regulate the immune system, cause i

Inhibition of calpains, by treatment with leupeptin, improves motoneuron survival and muscle function in models of motoneuron degeneration.

The effect of treatment with leupeptin, a calpain inhibitor, on motoneuron survival and muscle function was examined in in vitro and in vivo models of motoneuron degeneration. Exposure of primary rat motoneurons to alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole-propionic acid (AMPA) is an established in vitro model of excitotoxic motoneuron death. Here we show that leupeptin treatment improved motoneuron survival following exposure to AMPA (50 microM). Application of leupeptin (100 microM) to AMPA treated cultures rescued many motoneurons so that 74% (+/-3.4 S.E.M., n=5) survived compared with onl

Acute psycho-physiological responses to submaximal constant-load cycling under intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia vs. hypoxia-normoxia in young males.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxia and hyperoxia can affect the acute psycho-physiological response to exercise. Recording various perceptual responses to exercise is of particular importance for investigating behavioral changes to physical activity, given that the perception of exercise-induced pain, discomfort or unpleasure, and a low level of exercise enjoyment are commonly associated with a low adherence to physical activity. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the acute perceptual and physiological responses to aerobic exercise under intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia (IHHT), hypoxia-normoxia (IHT), and

Effect of Prehabilitation in Lung Cancer Patients Undergoing Lobectomy: A Review.

Deaths from lung cancer are mostly caused by smoking. Cough, dyspnea, fatigue, weight loss, and Horner's syndrome are among the symptoms. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) are the two categories into which lung cancer may be divided. Because of its effectiveness and lower death rates, lobectomy is the primary line of therapy for benign and early-stage lung illnesses. Pulmonary rehabilitation is a routine treatment for thoracic surgery individuals who are at a high risk to improve functional ability, avoid postoperative deterioration, avoid postoperative deter

3 months vs 12 months of romosozumab for postmenopausal osteoporosis (LIDA): an open-label, non-inferiority, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a highly prevalent disease associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. The most recently introduced osteoporosis medication is romosozumab, a monoclonal antibody with a unique mechanism of action that increases bone mineral density (BMD) more than other agents by both stimulating new bone formation and inhibiting resorption. The drug's stimulation of bone formation, however, wanes after several months. The use of romosozumab is limited by cost, the inconvenience of monthly clinic-administered injections, and its cardiovascular risk profile. I
