A Novel Method to Disentangle Tightly Linked Risk and Resilience Genes for Brain Disorders: Application to Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Genetic risk factors for psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders are well documented. However, some individuals with high genetic risk remain unaffected, and the mechanisms underlying such resilience remain poorly understood. The presence of protective resilience factors that mitigate risk could help explain the disconnect between predicted risk and reality, particularly for brain disorders, where genetic contributions are substantial but incompletely understood. Identifying and studying resilience factors could improve our understanding of pathology, enhance risk prediction, a

Investigating ruminal resident immune cells in dairy cattle before and after a subacute ruminal acidosis challenge.

Immune cells have been observed in many tissues of the mammal including the gut, liver, adipose, bone, and neural tissue. Our objective was to demonstrate whether immune cells are present within the stratified rumen epithelium of healthy lactating dairy cattle. We hypothesized that immune cells would be found in the rumen tissue and that the total amount of leukocytes present would increase during a ruminal acidosis challenge. We conducted a 2-phase experiment with 9 rumen-cannulated lactating Holstein cows. During phase 1, cows were fed a diet containing 31% NDF, 24% forage NDF, and 27% starc

Distributed EEG source localization of hypsarrhythmia in west syndrome: a standardized, low-resolution, brain electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA) study.

BACKGROUND: West syndrome is a developmental epileptic encephalopathy characterized by epileptic spasms, hypsarrhythmia, and neurodevelopmental regression. Despite well-defined clinical criteria, hypsarrhythmia remains challenging to characterize due to its disorganized nature. Recent advancements in quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) provide a more objective approach to understanding the electrophysiology of this disorder. This study aims to use qEEG and distributed source localization to increase the understanding of hypsarrhythmia in West syndrome. METHODS: This study involved 34 pa

Expression of Dystroglycanopathy-Related Enzymes, POMGNT2 and POMGNT1, in the Mammalian Retina and 661W Cone-like Cell Line.

Background. Dystroglycanopathies (DGPs) constitute a set of recessive, neuromuscular congenital dystrophies that result from impaired glycosylation of dystroglycan (DG). These disorders typically course with CNS alterations, which, alongside gradual muscular dystrophy, may include brain malformations, intellectual disability and a panoply of ocular defects. In this process, the protein products of 22 genes, collectively dubbed DGP-associated genes, directly or indirectly participate sequentially along a complex, branched biosynthetic pathway. POMGNT2 and POMGNT1 are two enzymes whose catalytic

Effect of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation with electrical stimulation on generalized anxiety disorder: Study protocol for an assessor-participant blinded, randomized sham-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is the most common type of anxiety disorder and can cause severe damage to patients and increase medical and social burdens. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has been used for treating mental disorders, but the involvement of surgery, perioperative risks, and potentially significant side effects have limited this treatment. Anatomical studies have shown that the ear is the only area where the afferent vagus nerve is distributed on the skin. Recently, the safety and efficacy of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (t-VNS) with electrical s

PySIDT: Subgraph Isomorphic Decision Trees for Molecular Property Prediction.

Accurate molecular property prediction is important across all fields of chemistry. Deep neural networks (DNNs) have become increasingly popular due to their ability to train automatically, avoiding the incredibly tedious process of constructing and extending traditional property estimation schemes. However, DNNs require large amounts of training data, are challenging to interpret, require large amounts of memory to load even during inference, and have severe difficulties incorporating qualitative chemical knowledge, which are often desired for molecular property prediction tasks. Here we pres

Reversal of neurodevelopmental toxicity induced by combined exposure to the neonicotinoid insecticides acetamiprid and imidacloprid in zebrafish through targeting DRP-1: insights into mitophagy and apoptosis mechanisms.

Neonicotinoid pesticides, including acetamiprid (ACE) and imidacloprid (IMI), are widely used due to their high efficacy and broad-spectrum activity. Despite IMI prohibition in certain countries by 2023, its residual effects, particularly in conjunction with ACE, which is frequently detected at elevated concentrations in rivers and surface waters, remain inadequately explored. In this study, the combined neurodevelopmental toxicity of ACE and IMI in zebrafish was investigated, with emphasis on mitochondrial dynamics and potential intervention strategies. We developed a 120-h acute exposure mod

AI-Enhanced Understanding of Retention Interactions in Supercritical Fluid Chromatography: Neural Network Insights into Retention on Selected Non-Polar Stationary Phases.

The retention behavior in supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) remains a complex and poorly understood phenomenon despite the development of various models to explain retention mechanisms. This study aims to deepen the understanding of retention by investigating three distinct stationary phases: high-strength silica octadecyl (HSS C18 SB), charged surface hybrid pentafluorophenyl (CSH PFP), and porous graphitic carbon (PGC) as a nonsilica-based phase. Three mobile phase compositions, i.e., CO2/methanol, CO2/methanol +10 mmol/L NH3, and CO2/methanol +2% H2O, were investigated using an exten

Impulse control deficits among patients with nonsuicidal self-injury: a mediation analysis based on structural imaging.

BACKGROUND: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is posited to arise from a complex interaction of biopsychosocial factors, with impulsivity playing a critical role. Given that current research on the neural mechanisms underlying this hypothesis remains inconsistent and limited in scope, we sought to explore how NSSI behaviours are associated with impulsivity resulting from structural brain alterations. METHODS: We recruited patients with NSSI behaviours and healthy controls from 11 psychiatric hospitals. We assessed the differences in impulse control between the 2 groups using the Barratt Impulsiv
