Turkish nurses' perspectives on a programme to reduce burnout.

BACKGROUND: Burnout is a serious problem among nurses. Programmes to prevent and reduce burnout have been described, but nurses report that they have difficulty attending such programmes and the dropout rate is substantial. AIM: To investigate the perspectives of nurses on burnout and the barriers and facilitators affecting attendance at a burnout reduction programme offered in their institution. METHODS: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews was conducted with 18 nurses who had volunteered to attend a burnout intervention programme at a University Hospital in Izmir, Turkey. S

Path analysis of biomarkers of exposure and early biological effects among coke-oven workers exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Many host factors or biomarkers are involved in the process of early DNA damage induced by occupational exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) as seen in coke-oven workers. This paper aimed to identify complicated causal interrelationship of various biomarkers using the path analysis. In this analysis, we included 235 subjects (166 coke-oven workers and 69 nonexposed controls) whose data on the comet assay (e.g., Olive tail moment) and cytogenetic analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes as well as urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) were available. The path analysis showed that coke-o

Proteomic analysis of the renal effects of simulated occupational jet fuel exposure.

We analyzed protein expression in the cytosolic fraction prepared from whole kidneys in male Swiss-Webster mice exposed 1 h/day for five days to aerosolized JP-8 jet fuel at a concentration of 1000 mg/m3, simulating military occupational exposure. Kidney cytosol samples were solubilized and separated via large-scale, high-resolution two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) and gel patterns scanned, digitized and processed for statistical analysis. Significant changes in soluble kidney proteins resulted from jet fuel exposure. Several of the altered proteins were identified by peptide mass finger

Perceptions of cancer survivors and healthcare professionals on adequate supportive care after treatment of cancer: An in-depth qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: Following treatment, cancer survivors often struggle to resume their life in several life domains. Although supportive care is increasingly available and can assist survivors in improving their quality of life, it often falls short in meeting the needs of the diverse and growing group of cancer survivors. Understanding the perceptions of key stakeholders is crucial for improving supportive care. This study aims to explore the perceptions of cancer survivors and healthcare professionals (HCPs) regarding the provision of adequate supportive care after treatment. METHODS: We conducted

Pairing transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation with an intensive bimanual training in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy: study protocol of a randomized sham-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Gross motor function impairments and manual dexterity deficits are frequently observed in children and adolescents with Cerebral Palsy (CP), having a major impact on their activity level and autonomy. Improving manual dexterity and activity level of patients with CP is often the focus of rehabilitation. Novel and adjuvant treatment methods that could support the standard training also in chronic conditions are a research priority. The transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation (tVNS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique, which provides a bottom-up stimulation of subcortical an

[First French data on sperm donation requests from female couples].

OBJECTIVE: The new bioethics law, enacted on August 2, 2021, has expanded access to medically assisted reproduction (MAR) with sperm donation to unmarried women and female couples. The implementation of this law led to a significant influx of sperm donation requests at French sperm banks. This major development in the field of ART in France, and in French society as a whole, prompted us to focus specifically on the requests from female couples. METHOD: A retrospective, single-center study was conducted at a gamete donation center in Paris. The data of women in same-sex couples who attended a

Modeling thermoregulatory responses during high-intensity exercise in warm environments.

The six cylinder thermoregulatory model (SCTM) has been validated thoroughly for resting humans. This type of modeling is helpful to predict and develop guidance for safe performance of work and recreational activities. In the context of a warming global climate, updating the accuracy of the model for intense exercise in warm environments will help a wide range of individuals in athletic, recreational, and military settings. Three sets of previously collected data were used to determine SCTM accuracy. Dataset 1: two groups [large (LG) 91.5 kg and small (SM) 67.7 kg] of individuals performed 60

Thinking on your feet: Beauty and auto small businesses maneuver the risks of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization officially declared SARS-CoV-2 a pandemic, and governments and health institutions enacted various public health measures to decrease its transmission rate. The COVID-19 pandemic made occupational health disparities for small businesses more visible and created an unprecedented financial burden, particularly for those located in communities of color. In part, communities of color experienced disproportionate mortality and morbidity rates from COVID-19 due to their increased exposure. The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted the public to reflect on ri

Cardiotoxicity of some pesticides and their amelioration.

Pesticides are used to control pests that harm plants, animals, and humans. Their application results in the contamination of the food and water systems. Pesticides may cause harm to the human body via occupational exposure or the ingestion of contaminated food and water. Once a pesticide enters the human body, it may create health consequences such as cardiotoxicity. There is not enough information about pesticides that cause cardiotoxicity in the literature. Currently, there are few reports that summarized the cardiotoxicity due to some pesticide groups. This necessitates reviewing the curre

The impact of a hand therapy workplace-based educational approach on the management of lateral elbow tendinopathy: A randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Lateral elbow tendinopathy (LET) is one of the most prevalent work-related musculoskeletal conditions. Management strategies for LET rarely consider patients' work environments and have limited focus on education regarding occupational risk factors. Workplace-based rehabilitation has shown benefits in the return to work processes for injured workers with other health conditions, but no studies have investigated the impact of a workplace-based educational approach in the management of LET. PURPOSES: First, to identify the impact of an additional workplace-based educational interven

Infrared thermography of the crânio-cervico-mandibular complex in wind and string instrumentalists.

PURPOSE: Musculoskeletal disorders can be common in wind and string instrumentalists. The musical gesture technique associated to musical performance can promote an asymmetrical isometric contraction with the hyperactivity of specific muscular groups and the overload of articular surfaces which can cause discomfort or pain. The aim of this investigation was to assess specific anatomical regions of interest within the cranio-cervico-mandibular complex in order to determine and evaluate the presence of muscular hyperactivity associated to musical performance. METHODS: An infrared imaging camera

Virtual reality-based treatment for regaining upper extremity function induces cortex grey matter changes in persons with acquired brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with acquired brain injuries (ABI) are in need of neurorehabilitation and neurorepair. Virtual anatomical interactivity (VAI) presents a digital game-like format in which ABI survivors with upper limb paresis use an unaffected limb to control a standard input device and a commonplace computer mouse to control virtual limb movements and tasks in a virtual world. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study, 35 ambulatory survivors of ABI (25/71% stroke, 10/29% traumatic brain injury) were enrolled. The subjects were divided into three groups: group A received VAI therapy only

Socio-economic patterning of expenditures on 'out-of-home' food and non-alcoholic beverages by product and place of purchase in Britain.

While most food is consumed at home, food eaten out-of-home plays an important role in diets and it has been associated with higher energy intake and higher body weight. Beyond prepared meals, there is limited understanding of what foods people buy out-of-home and where they buy them from. This study analyses out-of-home food purchases by food groups and food outlet types, and estimates socio-economic differences in these expenditure patterns. We used a nationally representative product-level dataset of expenditures (n=2,734,987) on foods and non-alcoholic beverages for out-of-home consumption

Burn injury outcome differences in Native Americans.

OBJECTIVE: Native Americans (NAs) have worse healthcare outcomes over some measures than non-Native Americans (non-NAs) (i.e., lower life expectancy, higher heart disease and psychiatric disease rates). Little data exists to show if there are differences in the hospital course of burned NAs versus non-NA patients. The purpose of this study is to analyze the epidemiology, clinical course, and outcomes of NA burn injury in Arizona. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective database review of all burn center burn admissions from 2000 to 2015. This initial dataset of 12,724 patients included all init
