The use of methylmetacrylates has not been widely accepted for the repair of frontal bony defects due to the possibility of secondary infection. The development of a new type of methylmetacrylates into which antibiotics, such as gentamicin, are incorporated has reduced the risk of secondary infection. The surgical technique and the results are illustrated on three patients. Favourable results were obtained in small and in large bony defects and even after previous frontal osteomyelitis.

Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG)-associated osteomyelitis is a rare adverse event following BCG vaccination, and there have been no previous reports of BCG-associated cervical spondylitis. Here, we describe the case of a 3-year-old immunocompetent girl who developed BCG-associated cervical spondylitis and was successfully treated by prompt surgical drainage of the abscess and administration of isoniazid and rifampicin for 9 months without sequelae.

We describe a case report of a 56-year-old male with undiagnosed multiple myeloma who had severe sepsis associated with pneumonia, meningitis, polyarthritis, and osteomyelitis related to invasive "Haemophilus quentini" infection. The genus was misidentified as H. influenzae by the common bacterial identification systems including newly introduced syndromic PCR-based methods. We review the epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory aspects of this rare, cryptic species of Haemophilus.

A 16-year-old boy with chronic granulomatous disease presented with pneumonia and rib osteomyelitis. Emericella nidulans var. echinulata was isolated from his sputum. After starting voriconazole, Rasamsonia piperina was isolated from the rib swelling. A combination therapy of voriconazole and micafungin effectively eradicated this invasive mixed-mold infection. In immunocompromised patients, a precise pathogenic diagnosis is clinically useful for administration of an appropriate treatment regimen.

Synchondrosis ischiopubic syndrome (SIS), also known as van Neck-Odelberg disease, is a syndrome characterized by an atypical ossification pattern of the ischiopubic synchondrosis. Its radiological features may mimic stress fracture, neoplasm, osteomyelitis, or posttraumatic osteolysis, causing problems in diagnosis, sometimes leading to unnecessary workup. We report two cases in which the correlation between the clinical and multimodality imaging data enabled the correct diagnosis of SIS.

Fatigue-type stress fractures occur following repetitive loading of normal bone. These occur frequently in the tibia, although vertical orientation to the fracture is much less common than transverse orientation. Without a convincing history of new or accelerated muscular activity, imaging can be difficult to interpret and evaluation may require more than one imaging modality to exclude other diagnostic considerations, including neoplasm and osteomyelitis.

Serious infections caused by organisms of the genus Bacillus developed in seven patients. Five drug abusers had either endocarditis or osteomyelitis, one leukemic patient had necrotizing fasciitis, and one patient had a ventriculoatrial shunt infection with recurrent bacteremia. All patients recovered. Experience with these cases reemphasizes the importance of not dismissing Bacillus organisms as culture contaminants, especially when isolated from blood, body fluids, or closed-space infections.

It can arise haematogenously, via extension from a contiguous infection, or by direct inoculation during surgery or trauma. Adult-onset immunodeficiency syndrome is characterized by the presence of anti-interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) autoantibody and the distribution of infections. Here, we describe Salmonella enterica bacteremia in a Thai woman who also had anti-IFN-γ autoantibody. The patient was also suffering from Salmonella osteomyelitis and a peri-orbital abscess. Her symptoms were completely eradicated after surgical intervention and the administration of appropriate antibiotics.

Sphingomonas paucimobilis is a Gram-negative bacteria identified as a rare infectious agent, more commonly seen among immune-compromised hosts. Infections include bacteremia, septicemia leading to septic shock, bone and soft-tissue infections such as septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, infection of shunts, and implantable devices. Although the organism has been reported to have low pathogenicity, infections in the immune compromised can be devastating leading to even death.

Epidural epidural abscess is usually secondary to acute frontal sinusitis and osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. Nose-derived intracranial connplications are less common than otogenic ones, and infections caused by nasal and sinus trauma, foreign bodies and surgery are more common than those caused by inflammation alone. The frontal lobe abscess caused by frontal sinusitis is more common in brain abscess with nasal intracranial complications.

We report a case of community-acquired meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) preseptal cellulitis complicated by zygomatic osteomyelitis, cavernous sinus thrombosis, meningitis, and necroziting pneumonia in a previously healthy two and half month old girl. This case exemplifies an aggressive and disseminated CA-MRSA infection with deep venous thrombosis in an infant without predisposing risk factors. The literature is reviewed and recommendations for management are provided.

Self-mutilation and particularly self-destructive dermatoses are not usually life-threatening. This case involves a man who met the DSM-III R diagnostic criteria for delusional (paranoid) disorder, somatic type. His destructive behavior involving the face and scalp resulted in osteomyelitis and pneumococcal meningitis. He responded to treatment initially, but was later lost to follow-up. No similar case of self-mutilation has been reported.

Transaxial emission computed tomography (ECT) was performed in dogs with experimentally induced abscesses, using 67Ga and several 99mTc-labeled organ-specific radiopharmaceuticals. Superimposition of 99mTc ECT images onto the 67Ga images gave the precise anatomic location of the abnormal foci of 67Ga uptake, correctly localizing a perinephric abscess, a splenic abscess, and a focus of osteomyelitis. This technique also permits further characterization of regions of decreased activity.
