Severe fishhook-related ocular injury: A case series.

UNLABELLED: This study examined the treatment, clinical course, and prognosis of two patients who visited our institution with severe ocular fishhook-related injuries with complications. The first patient was a 57-year-old man injured in the right eye by a fishhook lacerating the right upper eyelid. Although no aqueous humor leakage was observed, intraocular hemorrhage was severe, and the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was "counting fingers" at 15 cm. The eyelid was sutured and vitreous surgery with cataract surgery was performed for traumatic cataract, vitreous hemorrhage, and retinal de

[Persistent visual problems thirty years after severe head trauma].

INTRODUCTION: Visual disturbances are common after severe head trauma. Some authors report 50 percent of these patients having damage to the visual system, ocular motor nerve palsies, or central eye movement disturbances. Visual disturbances influence prognosis and outcome of neurological rehabilitation, and, in most cases, diagnosis and treatment require interdisciplinary care. CASE REPORT: We report here a 50-year-old patient who suffered from severe head trauma at age 20. After coming out of a 4-week coma, he suffered visual disturbances such as blurred vision and diplopia. Visual acuity w

Bilateral eye injury caused by a high-pressure water jet from a fire hose.

We present a case of bilateral eye injury caused by a high-pressure water jet from a fire hose. Eye injury secondary to high-pressure water jets are relatively rare, but invariably result in severe damage to all ocular structures. A 51-year-old woman was admitted to our ophthalmologic department for treatment following a direct hit in the face by a water jet from a fire hose from a distance of about one meter. The patient had bilateral extensive eyelid edema and ecchymosis, conjunctival chemosis with hemorrhage, vitreous hemorrhages in the right eye and iridodialysis with hyphema in the left e

[Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in atrophia gyrata: pars plana vitrectomy with silicone oil instillation].

BACKGROUND: Gyrate atrophy is a form of choroidal dystrophia characterized by a genetic defect of the mitochondrial matrix enzyme ornithine ketoacidoaminotransferase on chromosome 10. Apart from rare myopathic problems, cases of choroidal, iridal atrophy, complicated subcapsular cataract, optic atrophy, macular edema, reticular retinoschisis, vasculitis and perivasculitis could be observed so far. To our knowledge, rheumatogenous retinal detachment has been described before. We present a 34-year-old female subject with a retinal detachment of the right eye over 3 quadrants with 3 small round f

Ophthalmologic characteristics and outcomes of children with cortical visual impairment and cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Cortical visual impairment (CVI) is the most common cause of pediatric visual impairment in developed countries, and cerebral palsy (CP) is diagnosed in approximately half of children with CVI. It is unknown whether children with CVI who also have CP (CVI+CP) have different characteristics and outcomes (with regard to visual acuity, strabismus, and response to strabismus surgery) than children with CVI without CP (CVI-CP). METHODS: The medical records of all children with CVI, with and without CP, evaluated at our institution between 2013 and 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Pr
