Sleep-related bruxism, microarousals and oxyhaemoglobin desaturations in sleep stages: A cross-sectional study in a large apnoeic population.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-related bruxism (SB) is the habit of grinding or clenching the teeth during sleep, mediated by the non-peripheral central nervous system. PURPOSE: The objectives of this cross-sectional study were to evaluate associations between SB, microarousals and oxyhaemoglobin desaturations and to compare the frequency of SB and microarousals in sleep stages, in an apnoeic population. METHODS: Two hundred and forty individuals composed the sample, who underwent a single full-night polysomnography. Self-reports and clinical inspections were not considered for assessing SB. The polysomn…

Assessment of sleep quality using cardiopulmonary coupling and its predictive value for delirium in ICU patients.

OBJECTIVE: To assess sleep quality in intensive care unit (ICU) patients using cardiopulmonary coupling (CPC) analysis and explore its predictive value for delirium. METHOD: ICU patients (n = 135) were divided into the delirium group (n = 44) and control group (n = 91) based on the Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU). CPC analysis was used to evaluate the sleep quality of all participants. RESULT: Intergroup comparisons showed that total sleep time, stable sleep time, and sleep efficiency were significantly lower in the delirium group than in the control group,

Sarcopenia and sleep in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

OBJECTIVE: To verify the relationship between sarcopenia and sleep in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). METHODS: Individuals with COPD were cross-sectionally assessed for lung function (spirometry), sleep (both subjectively [Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI] and objectively [Actiwatch sleep monitor]) and the presence of sarcopenia (handgrip strength by dynamometry). All tests were carried out in accordance with international standards. RESULTS: Twenty-nine individuals with COPD were analyzed (16 women; 69 ± 7 years; BMI 27 ± 5 kg/m2; FEV1 59 ± 19% predicted).

The association between sleep disturbance and nightmares: Temporal dynamics of nightmare occurrence and sleep architecture in the home.

We collected measures of sleep architecture and nightmares from participants (N = 61) wearing the DREEM 3 headband across 2 weeks of data collection to test the hypothesis that there are bidirectional links between insomnia (measured as sleep disturbance) and nightmare events. Nightmares were predicted by increased sleep disturbance the night before the nightmare, but not on the same night or 2 nights before. We also found that nightmare occurrences did not predict increased sleep disturbance on the same night or the following 2 nights, rather nightmares predicted increased sleep disturbance a

Venous blood gases in the assessment of respiratory failure in patients undergoing sleep studies: a randomized study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Venous blood gases (VBGs) are not consistently considered suitable surrogates for arterial blood gases (ABGs) in assessing acute respiratory failure due to variable measurement error. The physiological stability of patients with chronic ventilatory failure may lead to improved agreement in this setting. METHODS: Adults requiring ABGs for sleep or ventilation titration studies had VBGs drawn before or after each ABG, in a randomized order. Veno-arterial correlation and agreement were examined for carbon dioxide tension (PCO2), pH, oxygen tension (PO2), and oxygen saturation (

CSF-profile and hypocretin levels in children with narcolepsy type 1 and 2.

BACKGROUND: Narcolepsy is a rare neurological disease caused by dysfunction of hypocretin-producing neurons. Hypocretin concentrations in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of less than 110 pg/ml are considered pathological in adults. OBJECTIVES: To compare hypocretin levels of children with narcolepsy type 1, type 2 and disease control groups, in addition to a detailed CSF analysis, clinical and polysomnographic parameters. METHODS: In a retrospective, cross-sectional study, children diagnosed with narcolepsy based on clinical and polysomnographic parameters, who received a CSF analysis and hypo

Sleep-disordered breathing is independently associated with elevated natriuretic peptide levels in patients with cardiovascular diseases.

Sleep disorders and sleep duration have attracted considerable attention as potential modifiable risk factors for the development and progression of heart failure (HF). However, whether these sleep behaviors could aggravate the underlying cardiac condition remains ambiguous. We evaluated the associations between the levels of plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), sleep quality and quantity, or daytime sleepiness in cardiovascular diseases (CVD) patients. A total of 1717 consecutive patients with CVD [median age, 66 years (55-74 years); female, 27.5%] wer
