Genetic testing for hereditary hearing loss: connexin 26 (GJB2) allele variants and two novel deafness-causing mutations (R32C and 645-648delTAGA).

Mutations in GJB2 are the most common cause of hereditary congenital hearing loss in many countries and are found in about half of persons with severe-to-profound congenital autosomal recessive non-syndromic hearing loss (ARNSHL). We report the results of GJB2 mutation screening in 209 consecutive persons with congenital deafness of indeterminate etiology using an allele-specific polymerase chain reaction assay, single-strand conformational polymorphism analysis, and direct sequencing. GJB2 allele variants were detected in 74 of 209 deaf individuals (35%). Over one-fourth of screened individua

Human generalized argyria: a submicroscopic and X-ray spectroscopic study.

A 58-year-old man presented with a slate-gray discoloration of the skin. The patient had no medical complaint apart from the increasing cosmetic disability. He gave no drug history and denied professional exposure to chemical compounds. General medical examination was noncontributory; routine laboratory data were within the normal range. Light microscopy revealed the presence of numerous, small, pigmented particles at the dermal level. The submicroscopic investigation showed that the granules were deeply electron dense, had an irregular polycyclic contour, and varied in size between 100 and 60

Community pharmacy interventions for health promotion: effects on professional practice and health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacies are an easily accessible and cost-effective platform for delivering health care worldwide, and the range of services provided has undergone rapid expansion in recent years. Thus, in addition to dispensing medication, pharmacy workers within community pharmacies now give advice on a range of health-promoting behaviours that aim to improve health and to optimise the management of long-term conditions. However, it remains uncertain whether these health-promotion interventions can change the professional practice of pharmacy workers, improve health behaviours and o

Factors associated with defensive medicine practice in United Arab Emirates: A cross-sectional study with multivariate analysis.

Health services institutes worldwide are trying to reduce defensive medical practice to limit its negative impact on patient care. We evaluated the factors associated with this defensive medical practice among medical professionals in the United Arab Emirates. This study deployed multivariate logistic regression analysis. Defensive medical practice was defined according to the responses given to questions about potentially unnecessary referral, testing, and additional care in a cross-sectional 23-item questionnaire administered to medical professionals after obtaining ethical committee approva

Attitudes of psychiatrists towards people with mental illness: a cross-sectional, multicentre study of stigma in 32 European countries.

BACKGROUND: Mental health-related stigma occurs among the public and professionals alike. The lived experience of mental illness has been linked to less stigmatising attitudes. However, data on psychiatrists and the relationship between stigmatising attitudes and psychotherapeutic activity or case discussion groups remains scarce. METHODS: A cross-sectional multicentre study was performed in 32 European countries to investigate the lived experiences and attitudes of psychiatrists toward patients with mental illness as well as the relationship between stigma, psychosocial and professional fact

Information needs and sources of information among people with depression and anxiety: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have identified substantial unmet information needs in people with depression and anxiety. Sufficient information about the disorder, treatment, available services, and strategies for self-management is essential as it may influence quality of care and patients' quality of life. This scoping review aimed to provide a broad overview of information needs of people with depression and anxiety as well as the sources that they use to seek this information. METHODS: We included all primary research published in English that investigated information needs or information

Protocol for an implementation study of an evidence-based home cardiac rehabilitation programme for people with heart failure and their caregivers in Scotland (SCOT:REACH-HF).

INTRODUCTION: Despite evidence that cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is an essential component of care for people with heart failure, uptake is low. A centre-based format is a known barrier, suggesting that home-based programmes might improve accessibility. The aim of SCOT: Rehabilitation EnAblement in CHronic Heart Failure (REACH-HF) is to assess the implementation of the REACH-HF home-based CR intervention in the context of the National Health Service (NHS) in Scotland. This paper presents the design and protocol for this observational implementation study. Specific objectives of SCOT:REACH-HF are

[Measuring, assessing, acting: A practice test of quality indicators for coronary heart disease].

BACKGROUND: There are only limited possibilities for doctors in outpatient services to establish quality management that is based on data-driven feedback regarding the quality of health care. However, transparency about one's own activities is a prerequisite for refining this quality. The aim of this project was to make the quality of care for patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) more transparent, use this as a basis to initiate improvement processes, and explore the framework conditions and factors promoting or inhibiting the intended improvement of health care quality. METHOD: 48 gene

Correlates of Mortal Distress Among Healthcare Staff in Hospitals: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mortal distress encompasses emotional, cognitive, physical and behavioural responses to death and dying among healthcare staff who frequently encounter mortality in hospital settings. Healthcare workers often experience heightened levels of mortal distress due to their regular exposure to patient deaths, which can negatively impact both their personal and professional lives, leading to burnout and high turnover rates. AIM: To identify and quantitatively synthesise correlates of mortal distress among hospital healthcare staff and examine moderating factors affecting these relations

Reporting of Tobacco Use and Health Outcomes Among Transgender and Gender-Expansive People in Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy Research: 1980-2024.

PURPOSE: Transgender/gender-expansive (TGE) people, who use tobacco at high rates, are frequently advised not to use tobacco during gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) due to the increased risk of negative health events. However, there is no summary of studies reporting the risk of negative health events for TGE people with versus without tobacco use during GAHT. This systematic review assesses what is known about tobacco use and health outcomes in studies of TGE people pursuing GAHT. METHODS: Searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, PsycInfo, Google Scholar, and Mednar. The protocol wa

Buprenorphine misinformation and willingness to treat patients with opioid use disorder among primary care-aligned health care professionals.

BACKGROUND: Buprenorphine is a highly effective medication for opioid use disorder that is underused by health care professionals (HCPs). Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) misinformation may be an important barrier to buprenorphine access, but most implementation strategies have aimed to reduce negative attitudes towards patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) rather than misinformation specific to buprenorphine use. In this study, we assessed the degree to which HCPs endorsed misinformation related to buprenorphine, and whether this is associated with willingness to provide care to p

Prenatal genetic counselors' attitudes, beliefs, and practices with discussing postnatal Duchenne muscular dystrophy treatment options.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked genetic condition characterized by progressive muscle degeneration. Recently, several genotype-specific treatment options for DMD have become available. Prenatal genetic counselors may encounter at-risk patients for DMD, through a variety of indications. However, little is known about how prenatal genetic counselors approach conversations about these emerging treatment options. This study aims to explore prenatal genetic counselors' attitudes, beliefs, and practices in discussing postnatal DMD treatment options with their patients. Board-certifi

The usefulness of Systematic Coding of Observed Human Behavior (SCOBe) for pharmacist-patient communication: insights from other healthcare professions.

Systematic approaches to studying pharmacist-patient communication are relevant to support the development of communication practices to improve identification and resolvement of patient medication-related problems. However, there is currently no established gold standard for systematically coding pharmacist-patient communication, making it relevant to explore whether existing Systematic Coding of Observed Human Behavior (SCOBe) systems from other healthcare professions could be transferable to pharmacy practice. Therefore, this commentary explores the opportunities and challenges of applying

[General practitioners' knowledge of anticancer immunotherapies and their adverse effects: A cross-sectional survey].

INTRODUCTION: Cancer remains the leading cause of mortality in France. The rise of anticancer immunotherapies improves patient prognosis but carries a risk of immune-related adverse events. The increasing role of general practitioners in patient follow-up raises questions about their knowledge and confidence in managing these effects. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among general practitioners identified through the REISAMIC registry at the Institut Gustave Roussy. A questionnaire assessing knowledge of immunotherapies, familiarity with adverse effects, and clinical experience

Feasibility Study on Development of a Collaborative Monitoring System between a Hospital and Community Pharmacy Using an Electronic Patient-Reported Outcome Application for Breast Cancer Outpatients Treated with Abemaciclib.

We developed a symptom monitoring system that facilitates collaborations among physicians, hospital pharmacists, and community pharmacists using an electronic Patient-Reported Outcome (ePRO) application. The present study investigated the feasibility and acceptability of this system. Before and after the introduction of the system, participants completed a questionnaire assessing the burden, anxiety, and satisfaction using a 0-10 numeric rating scale. The rate of application input implementation, the number of times alert and free messages sent by patients, adherence, the incidence of adverse

Preferences of healthcare providers regarding future follow-up care for breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer: A discrete choice experiment.

BACKGROUND: With rising cancer survival rates and an increasing number of cancer survivors, the sustainability of secondary care follow-up care is under pressure. Transferring certain follow-up tasks to primary care is suggested as a potential solution, but there is no consensus on the optimal strategy for this. PURPOSE: To identify preferences of primary and secondary healthcare providers regarding the transfer of follow-up care for breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer, using a discrete choice experiment (DCE). METHOD: A DCE was conducted among 153 primary and secondary healthcare profes
