Two patients with micrognathia of the mandible caused by radiation therapy during infancy are reported herein. The first patient was a 25-year-old man with hemangioma of the tongue. He had previously received radiation therapy totaling 51 Gy at 1 and 2 years of age. The other patient was a 54-year-old woman who had received radiation therapy for an oral tumor during infancy. An analysis of monoclonal gammopathy in relation to radiation exposure was conducted on atomic bomb survivors examined between October 1979 and September 1981 and between June 1985 and May 1987. Adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) in adenocarcinoma of the rectum requires the application of between 5,500 and 6,600 cGy, while the small bowel does not tolerate doses beyond 4,200 cGy without developing enteritis, often followed by stenosis, fistulas, or perforation. Acquired ichthyosis is a rare dermatosis associated with a number of malignancies. Side effects seen on the skin secondary to megavoltage radiotherapy are uncommon but may include fine dry desquamation and tanning. We present a case of ichthyosiform scaling limited to the radiation fields in a patient treated for brain metastases of a primary small cell lung carcinoma. The reader is reminded that side effects of megavoltage treatment do occur on the skin. A brief review of these effects is included.

The anatomic complexity of the pinna predisposes that structure to a variety of unique, site specific postoperative complications following management of skin cancer. We describe four unusual auricular complications: 1) radiochondronecrosis; 2) autonecrosis of skin during second intention healing; 3) hearing loss secondary to tragal retraction over the external auditory canal; and 4) extension of tumor through fenestrated cartilage. Well-known postoperative auricular complications are reviewed and anticipation and recognition of these unusual complications are emphasized.

Hepatic veno-occlusive disease (HVOD) and interstitial pneumonitis (IP) are both widely regarded as toxicities of intensive cytoreductive therapy, but their association has not been previously examined. Risk factors for IP were evaluated in 154 patients given intensive cytoreductive therapy followed by allogeneic bone marrow transplantation during a 2 1/2 year period. Despite a thoracoabdominal retroperitoneal approach to an enlarging symptomatic infrarenal aortic aneurysm, proximal aortic dissection was hazardous due to radiation induced retroperitoneal fibrosis. Patients with long survival following cervical irradiation are at risk for accelerated carotid atherosclerosis. Five-week-old male Crj:CD (SD) rats were treated with excess sodium chloride after abdominal X-irradiation. The gastric regions of the rats were irradiated with a total dose of 20 Gy given in two equal fractions separated by 3 days.
