Consequences of Hyperthyroidism and Its Treatment for Bone Microarchitecture Assessed by High-Resolution Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography.

Background: Hyperthyroidism is associated with bone mass reduction and increased fracture risk, but the effects on other important bone parameters have been sparsely examined. Therefore, we investigated bone microarchitecture and estimated bone strength by high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) in hyperthyroid patients at diagnosis and after being euthyroid for at least one year. Methods: Two approaches were used: (A) a case-control study comparing 61 hyperthyroid women with 61 euthyroid women matched for age and menopause status; (B) a follow-up study, in which

Rehabilitation Protocol for Lunate Fracture in a Clinical Case Report.

A carpal injury called a lunate fracture can cause severe carpal instability if treatment is not received. After the scaphoid, triquetrum, and trapezium, the lunate is the fourth most frequently fractured carpal bone. Due to lunate fracture, the functional prognosis is uncertain, and conservative treatment frequently results in surgery. Lunate fracture may be caused by anatomical features such as ulnar and radial variation, although necrosis is not commonly one of them. Vascularization in the lunate is unstable and dependent on the capsular arterioles. High shear stresses are frequently applie

The validity and reliability of DrGoniometer, a smartphone application, for measuring forearm supination.

STUDY DESIGN: Clinical measurement (reliability and validity) study. INTRODUCTION: Forearm supination is important in many daily activities and is thus measured by therapists and researchers usually with a universal goniometer. DrGoniometer, a SmartPhone application, has been validated for other joint angles in the body. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To establish the reliability and validity of DrGoniometer (CDM S.r.L, Cagliari, Italy) for measuring forearm supination in healthy populations and those with forearm fractures. METHODS: Participants had sustained a distal radius fracture that was treat

Forearm bone mineral density and incidence of hip fractures in Swedish urban and rural men 1987-2002.

BACKGROUND: It is not known whether the recently described break in the trend in hip fracture incidence in many settings applies in both women and men, depends on changes in bone mineral density (BMD) or changes in other risk factors, or whether it is apparent in both urban and rural settings. METHODS: We evaluated changes in annual hip fracture incidence from 1987 to 2002 in Swedish men aged ≥60 years in one urban (n = 25,491) and one rural population (n = 16,432) and also secular differences in BMD, measured by single-photon absorptiometry at the distal radius and multiple other risk factor

Fat and bone in children: differential effects of obesity on bone size and mass according to fracture history.

Fat mass predicts bone accrual in prepubertal children, but obese children have increased fracture risk. We hypothesised that bone size and mass would vary according to prior fracture in obese children. One hundred and three children (52 obese) underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanning of the lumbar spine, total body, and radial metaphysis and diaphysis. We derived body size-adjusted bone mineral density (BMD) estimates for each site using commonly employed procedures. Following adjustment for either age, age(2) and weight, or height and weight based on a reference group of non

Adequacy of laboratory simulation of in-line skater falls.

PURPOSE: Currently most laboratory simulation of distal radius fractures and wrist injuries has been with axial limb loading or vertical drop technique. To better assess the contribution of horizontal velocity in momentum in the development of wrist injury and wrist fracture we have compared forces and fracture patterns for fall simulations involving strictly vertical impacts with those that incorporated horizontal momentum in fresh-frozen upper extremities. METHODS: The premise for testing was based on a forward fall onto the palmar surface of an outstretched arm. A 45 degrees-incline impact…

Control pattern injuries in fatal fixed-wing general aviation accidents.

BACKGROUND: In aviation accident investigations, control pattern injuries (CPIs) have been useful for accident reconstruction and for determining who was in control of the aircraft at the time of impact. Recently, CPIs have been considered nonspecific. This study compares CPIs suffered by pilots and passengers in fatal fixed-wing general aviation (GA) accidents. METHODS: Accident data were collected from the Federal Aviation Administration's Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (FAA-CAMI) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) accident reports for the year 2010. Pilot and passenger data

Bone imaging and chronic kidney disease: will high-resolution peripheral tomography improve bone evaluation and therapeutic management?

Bone damage because of chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents a daily challenge for nephrologists. The impact of CKD on bone health may be immediate (serum phosphocalcic disturbances) or delayed (bone fractures and vascular calcifications). Histomorphometry remains the gold standard to evaluate bone, but it is rarely performed in clinical practice. Areal measurement of bone mineral density by dual x-ray absorptiometry is routinely performed to evaluate bone mass. However, this technique presents some limitations. In 2000, the United States National Institutes of Health defined new "quality" c

CT for determining the results of treatment of fractures of the wrist.

Eighteen CT examinations of the wrist were performed in 13 patients to evaluate the results of treatment for carpal fractures. In four cases with metal objects and in seven with cast materials, there was no difficulty achieving adequate CT studies. In 13 cases CT was found to be helpful in determining bony union in the presence of advanced osteoporosis. In six cases CT was excellent in evaluating bone-graft incorporation. CT affords improved detection of fractures perpendicular to the plane of the scan and also shows small areas of bone disruption, even with osteoporosis. Axial CT images can e

[Use of the elastic stable intramedullary nailing technique in non-typical pediatric fractures].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The "Elastic Stable Intramedullary Nailing" (E.S.I.N.) of French authors as a method of treatment of children's diaphyseal long bone fractures is well known from nineties of the last century. After we got familiar with the technique we wanted to introduce it in other indications, especially some metaphyseal long bone fractures and injuries of metacarpals, meta-tarsals and phalangeal bones in the growing skeleton. MATERIAL: During two last years, i.e. 1999-2000, ESIN procedure in 97 children was performed in our Regional Pediatric Trauma Centre. That was 39% of all osteos

Long-term implant retention after impacted elastic stable intramedullary nailing in pediatric diaphyseal forearm fractures: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) for forearm fractures, nail protrusion may cause irritation-related implant removal. The primary aim was to evaluate implant retention after nail impaction, and secondarily to assess secondary procedures, complications, and protrusion as a predictor of removal. METHODS: We analyzed a retrospective cohort of children with diaphyseal forearm fractures treated with impacted ESIN between 2017 and 2024. Implant retention was defined as no nail removal at record review. Secondary procedures were unplanned operations, while comp
