Contextualizing educational differences in "vaccination uptake": A thirty nation survey.

This paper addresses the issue of public acceptance of vaccination with specific attention being paid to the role of education in vaccine uptake. Using Flash Eurobarometer 287 (2009) survey data and exploring it through the lens of Beck's reflexive modernization and Roger's protection motivation theories we examined how individual-level factors affect intention to get vaccinated, particularly aimed at examining whether higher education predicts more or less vaccination intention in different societies. The empirical results support an idea that at least for seasonal flu educational differences…

Plantar cutaneous function in Parkinson's disease patients ON and OFF L-dopa.

While Parkinson's disease (PD) is traditionally viewed as a motor disorder, there is mounting evidence that somatosensory function becomes affected as well. However, conflicting reports exist regarding whether plantar sensitivity is reduced in early-onset PD patients. Plantar sensitivity was assessed using monofilaments and a gold-standard, two-interval two-alternative forced choice vibrotactile detection task at both 30 and 250Hz. Lower-limb cutaneous reflexes were assessed by delivering continuous, sinusoidal vibration at 30 and 250Hz while recording muscle activity in Tibialis Anterior. We …

Origins of movements following stunning and during bleeding in cattle.

At slaughter, after stunning, the absence of certain physical signs such as eye movements/reflexes or rhythmic breathing helps determine whether the loss of consciousness was actually achieved. Cattle frequently show movements of neck and/or legs during the post-stun period. We evaluated 1) the origins of these movements in stunned unconscious cattle and 2) relationships with presence of ocular signs or breathing and shot characteristics. In stunned unconscious cattle, movements appear to be reflex-like, generated in the brain stem and/or spinal cord. First, in stunned unconscious cattle, move…

Do hypermobile subjects without pain have alteration to the feedback mechanisms controlling the shoulder girdle?

OBJECTIVES: It has been reported that hypermobile subjects have proprioceptive deficits. However, it remains unclear whether pain-free subjects with hypermobility also have deficits. METHODS: Ten subjects with hypermobility and nine without hypermobility were recruited following ethical approval and informed consent. Shoulder mobility, joint position sense (JPS) and a reflex of trapezius evoked from arm afferents were compared. RESULTS: There was greater shoulder mobility in the hypermobile group (p = 0.004). There were no differences in shoulder JPS between the groups (p = 0.27), although, …

The effects of botulinum toxin A on ephaptic transmission in idiopathic hemifacial spasm.

OBJECTIVE: Lateral spreading and synkinetic responses of blink reflex are a sign of ephaptic transmission in idiopathic hemifacial spasm (HFS). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of botulinum toxin A (Btx A) on ephaptic transmission in idiopathic HFS. METHODS: Thirty-three patients with idiopathic HFS were investigated. Btx A was injected only into the affected orbicularis oculi (OC) muscle. Electrophysiological studies were performed before and three weeks after the Btx A injection. RESULTS: After Btx A, the latencies of motor response and blink reflexes elicited from the OC m…

The anxiety disorder spectrum: fear imagery, physiological reactivity, and differential diagnosis.

This review considers recent research assessing psychophysiological reactivity to fear imagery in anxiety disorder patients. As in animal subjects, fear cues prompt in humans a state of defensive motivation in which autonomic and somatic survival reflexes are markedly enhanced. Thus, a startle stimulus presented in a fear context yields a stronger (potentiated) reflex, providing a quantitative measure of fearful arousal. This fear potentiation is further exaggerated in specific or social phobia individuals when viewing pictures or imagining the phobic object. Paradoxically, fear imagery studie…

Artificial gravity: a possible countermeasure for post-flight orthostatic intolerance.

Four payload crewmembers were exposed to sustained linear acceleration in a centrifuge during the Neurolab (STS-90) flight. In contrast to previous studies, otolith-ocular reflexes were preserved during and after flight. This raised the possibility that artificial gravity may have acted as a countermeasure to the deconditioning of otolith-ocular reflexes. None of the astronauts who were centrifuged had orthostatic intolerance when tested with head-up passive tilt after flight. Thus, centrifugation may also have helped maintain post-flight hemodynamic responses to orthostasis by preserving the …

Does paradoxical sleep deprivation and cocaine induce penile erection and ejaculation in old rats?

A recent study has established that paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) and cocaine administration elicit genital reflexes (penile erection and ejaculation) in young rats. To discover whether the same effects occurred in old animals submitted to PSD, we administered cocaine (15 mg/kg) to young (3-month) and old (22-month) male rats after a 4-day period of PSD or at the equivalent time-point in control animals. We then evaluated erections and ejaculations. Sixty per cent of the old-PSD group displayed erection, although ejaculation was not observed. Genital reflexes were absent in young and old…

Case report: Necrotizing leukomyelitis and meningitis in a Pomeranian.

A 2.5-year-old female entire Pomeranian dog was presented for acute paraparesis progressing within 2 days to paraplegia. General physical examination was unremarkable. Neurological examination showed paraplegia without nociception, a mass reflex upon testing perineal reflexes and withdrawal reflexes in the pelvic limbs and patellar hyperreflexia. Cutaneous trunci reflexes were absent caudal to the level of the 6th thoracic vertebra. Spinal hyperesthesia was present. Neuroanatomical localization was consistent with a T3-L3 myelopathy. Hematological and biochemical blood tests [including C-react…

Laryngeal Dysfunction Manifesting as Chronic Refractory Cough and Dyspnea: Laryngeal Physiology in Respiratory Health and Disease.

TOPIC IMPORTANCE: Laryngeal dysfunction as a cause of chronic refractory cough and episodic dyspnea is often missed, which results in unnece … ted insults. Couple this with key roles in regulation of airflow and mediation of airway protective reflexes, it is not surprising that neuropathic abnormalities and muscle dysfunction frequently develop. The expression of laryngeal dysfunction as hypersensitivity to mechanical, thermal, chemical, and other stimuli leads to exaggerated airway protective …

Reduction of lower limb spasticity after the suppression of intravesical noxious stimulus documented by gait analysis.

CONTEXT: Spasticity is characterized by muscle hypertonia due to a velocity-dependent increase in tonic stretch reflexes, mostly related to hyperactive spinal reflexes. After spinal cord injury, the impact of noxious stimuli on autonomic dysreflexia is well documented. It is admitted in clinical practice that sublesional noxious stimuli can also increase spasticity. However, this has never been reported in the literature. In this single case study, we describe the impact of a noxious stimulus (bladder stone) on the spasticity of lower limbs in a male with spinal cord injury, using quantitative…

Recurrent Miller Fisher: A Case Report Along With a Literature and an EMG/NCS Review.

MFS has been reported to recur in 10-12% of patients. There may be a genetic component related to HLA-DR2. Anti-GAD antibodies can be present in MFS along with anti-GQ1b. Common EMG/NCS associations consist of a predominantly axonal, sensory polyneuropathy and absent H reflexes. A 32-year-old female with a history of hypothyroidism presented to our institution twice with symptoms of diplopia, lower extremity weakness and distal paresthesias occurring a year apart. She had ophthalmoplegia, reduced reflexes, and ataxia on exam. CSF showed a borderline elevated protein of 47 and white blood cells…

Sensory feedback to ankle plantar flexors is not exaggerated during gait in spastic hemiplegic children with cerebral palsy.

It is still widely believed that exaggerated stretch reflexes and increased muscle tone in ankle plantar flexors contribute to reduced ankle joint movement during gait in children with cerebral palsy (CP). However, no study has directly measured stretch reflex activity during gait in these children. We investigated sensory feedback mechanisms during walking in 20 CP children and 41 control children. Stretch responses in plantar flexor muscles evoked in stance showed an age-related decline in control but not CP children. In swing the responses were abolished in control children, but significant…

Somatostatin 2A receptor-expressing presympathetic neurons in the rostral ventrolateral medulla maintain blood pressure.

Bulbospinal neurons in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) are critical for the maintenance of sympathetic vasomotor tone and normal cardiovascular reflex function. So far, selectively eliminating/inhibiting distinct subpopulations of RVLM neurons has not significantly altered arterial pressure. Here we show that RVLM presympathetic neurons that express somatostatin 2A receptors are essential for maintaining and potentially generating sympathetic vasomotor tone. Combined immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization were used to map the expression of somatostatin receptors 1, 2A, 2B, 3, a…

Prolonged quadriceps activity following imposed hip extension: a neurophysiological mechanism for stiff-knee gait?

The biomechanical characteristics of stiff knee gait following neurological injury include decreased knee flexion velocity at toe-off, which may be due to exaggerated quadriceps activity. The neuromuscular mechanism underlying this abnormal activity is unclear, although hyperexcitable heteronymous reflexes may be a source of impaired coordination. The present study examines the contribution of reflex activity from hip flexors on knee extensors following stroke and its association with reduced swing-phase knee flexion during walking. Twelve individuals poststroke and six control subjects were p…
