Predicting Nonsentinel Lymph Node Metastasis in Breast Cancer: A Multicenter Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy has been the standard modality for breast cancer patients with clinically node negative disease. In patients who undergo axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) due to SLN metastasis, the harvested nodes (non-SLNs) often contain no metastasis. Here, we evaluated the predictive factors associated with non-SLN metastasis in breast cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of patients with operable cT1-3, cN0 invasive breast cancer who underwent SLN biopsy followed by ALND due to SLN metastasis. The clinicopathologic factors

Does Diabetes Alter CSF Total Protein Levels? A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Elevation of total protein level in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF-TP) in diabetic patients is often disregarded by clinicians. However, existing studies on the topic have significant limitations, and therefore we aimed to explore the relationship between diabetes and CSF-TP in a large database of CSF samples. METHODS: Retrospective review of all diagnostic lumbar punctures at the Ottawa Hospital between 1996-2016. Patients were excluded if they had elevated CSF cell counts, or a condition known to elevate CSF-TP. Multivariate linear regression modeling considered the effect

Surgical treatment for infective endocarditis in the ageing society: a nationwide retrospective study in Japan.

OBJECTIVE: The current status of surgical treatment for infective endocarditis (IE) among very elderly people is unclear. METHODS: We extracted data on patients in Japan with community-acquired IE who were admitted and discharged between April 2010 and February 2018 using a nationwide inpatient, the Diagnosis Procedure Combination database. We divided patients into three groups: non-elderly (<65 years), elderly (65-79 years) and very elderly (≥80 years). A 1:1 propensity score matching was performed to compare proportions of surgical treatment and in-hospital mortality among the groups. RESU

Comparing medical cannabis use in 5 US states: a retrospective database study.

BACKGROUND: US states have been adopting their own medical cannabis laws since 1996. There is substantial variability in the medical cannabis programs between states, and these differences have not been thoroughly investigated in the literature. The objective of the study was to compare medical cannabis patient characteristics across five states to identify differences potentially caused by differing policies surrounding condition eligibility. METHODS: We conducted secondary analyses following a retrospective study of a registry database with data from 33 medical cannabis evaluation clinics i

Guillain-Barré syndrome triggered by surgery in a Chinese population: a multicenter retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Surgery is a potential trigger of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a disorder which leads to an autoimmune-mediated attack of peripheral nerves. The present study was designed to explore clinical features of post-surgical GBS compared with those of general GBS in order to provide better clinical advice to patients undergoing surgery. METHODS: The medical records of GBS patients who were seen at 31 tertiary hospitals in southern China between January 1, 2013 and September 30, 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. Post-surgical GBS was defined as symptoms of GBS within 6 weeks after sur

Risk factors for the occurrence and recurrence of acute cerebellar ataxia: a retrospective observational study.

OBJECTIVE: There is little evidence to support a correlation between abdominal surgery and acute cerebellar ataxia (ACA). We reviewed the records of children with ACA treated at our institution to analyze risk factors for ACA. METHODS: Clinical data of 442 children with ACA treated at Children's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University between November 2015 and June 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine risk factors for the occurrence and recurrence of ACA. RESULTS: In total, 442 children with ACA were included in this study. Multi

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical outcomes of microwave ablation (MWA) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in the treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT). METHOD: This retrospective study included 104 pHPT patients treated by MWA or RFA between January 2015 and March 2020 in four centers. The clinical outcomes including effectiveness and complications were compared between the two groups. Ablation cure was defined as the reestablishment of normal values of serum calcium and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) at least more than 6 months. Anticholinergic Burden Among Hospitalised Older Adults with Psychiatric Illnesses- A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Drugs with anticholinergic properties are known to be associated with deleterious effects on cognition in older adults. There is a paucity of literature in this aspect in older adults with psychiatric disorders. OBJECTIVE: To examine the anticholinergic cognitive burden and its predictors in hospitalised older adults having psychiatric disorders. METHODS: Case records of older adults who sought in-patient care under the Geriatric Psychiatry Unit from January 2019 to June 2019 were reviewed. The anticholinergic burden was assessed with Anticholinergic Cognitive Burden (ACB) scale

A Retrospective Study of 3,000 Indian Patients with Vitiligo Treated with Phototherapy or Topical Monotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo-affected individuals, especially patients with darker skin tones, can suffer from negative psychosocial impacts due to unpredictable development of the condition and perceived cosmetic concerns. However, given that spontaneous repigmentation can be gained in vitiligo, many patients ask for treatment due to these cosmetic concerns. In the literature, only a few studies have been documented focusing on the outcome of various treatment modalities for vitiligo. OBJECTIVE: This article highlights the retrospective response of various treatment modalities in Indian patients with

Co-infection of influenza A virus and SARS-CoV-2: A retrospective cohort study.

The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has spread across the world and is responsible for over 1,686,267 deaths worldwide. Co-infection with influenza A virus (IFV-A) during the upcoming flu season may complicate diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19. Little is known about epidemiology and outcomes of co-infection. Data for 213 COVID-19 patients treated at Tongji Hospital in Wuhan from January 28, 2020 to March 24, 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Ninety-seven of the patients (45.5%) tested positive for anti- IFV-A imm

Influenza Vaccination and Health Outcomes in COVID-19 Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Several measures aimed at containing the spread of this virus have been recommended by international and nation public health institutions, but whether the influenza vaccine, while not protective against COVID-19, nonetheless reduces disease severity is unclear. This study evaluated the potential role of influenza vaccine in reducing the rate of hospitalization and death in COVID-19 patients. COVID-19 cases recorded in the province of Brindisi (Apulia, Southern Italy) during the first pandemic wave (February-May 2020
