Vieussens' Arterial Ring and Exercise-Induced Polymorphic VT: Approach to Diagnosis and Management.

BACKGROUND: Vieussens' arterial ring (VAR) is an embryologic remnant of the conotruncal circle and a rare coronary anomaly. CASE SUMMARY: A 36-year-old man presented for a stress test for evaluation of exercise-induced palpitations. During the test, he developed sustained polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT) that self-terminated. Coronary angiography revealed nonobstructive coronary artery disease and type 3 VAR, with the right coronary artery supplying the entire left system. Extensive testing for other etiologies was negative. A repeat stress test after initiation of beta-blocker showed

Normal-Pressure Hydrocephalus Case Report: Self-Documented Over 8 Years with the Author's Observations.

Normal-pressure hydrocephalus is an almost curable disease, but the results of management are still not encouraging owing to the deceptive nature of the disease and its sensitivity to treatment. This has made the management of the disease controversial. The following self-documented report clarifies this. I have reported my experience in a scientific manner so that my colleagues can understand thoroughly certain facts related to intracranial hypertension. Achieving the optimal adjustment of the valve is a real challenge. I describe in detail the adjustment criteria I discovered. I believe that

Iatrogenic pharyngoesophageal perforations treated with fully covered self-expandable metallic stents (with video).

BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic pharyngoesophageal perforations are a rare but serious complication of endoscopy. Surgical and non-surgical approaches have been reported but result in a significant morbidity and extended hospital stay. Therefore, an unmet need exists for an alternative management technique. We demonstrate a new endoscopic approach for the management of iatrogenic pharyngoesophageal perforations through the use of esophageal fully covered self-expandable metallic stents (FCSEMS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two patients who underwent flexible endoscopy each suffered a large iatrogenic perfor

Traumatic peripheral neuropraxias in neonates: a case series.

Traumatic peripheral nerve palsies in the newborn are uncommon but are a cause of severe anxiety in parents. Erb's palsy, brachial plexus, radial nerve and facial nerve are the common nerves affected. Perinatal injuries are the most frequent cause of traumatic peripheral neuropraxias / nerve palsies. Usually these neuropraxias are self-limited with good recovery with conservative management in majority of cases.Ten neonates with peripheral neuropraxias were included in this retrospective study based on a review of these cases over a period of three and a half years. Their clinical profile, pre

Evolution of burnout syndrome in Spanish healthcare professionals during and after the COVID-19 pandemic: psychosocial variables involved.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence shows that throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers have experienced high levels of burnout. The preceding literature also points to the need to consider the three elements of burnout independently, as they appear to have different evolutionary trends and possibly different buffering and amplifying variables, although these aspects have hardly been explored. METHODS: The aim of the present investigation is precisely to shed light on these latter issues. It is a prospective study, carried out in 256 healthcare workers in Spain during three time points in rela

Towards a gendered diabetes care approach: a secondary analysis of conventional and complementary medicine diabetes health service use of older women with diabetes and a mental health co-morbidity.

BACKGROUND: Women with diabetes have different self-management and self-care characteristics and risk profiles to men. A difference of note is that women with diabetes are at greater risk of anxiety or depression. However, limited research has explored if the presence of a mental health co-morbidity is an influencing factor upon health service use pertinent to diabetes self-care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A secondary analysis of a chronic disease self-care sub-study stemming from the 45 and Up Study was conducted. Cross-sectional analyses were completed to examine the conventional and complement…

Network analysis and directed acyclic graph of smartphone addiction and multiple mental health factors in youths.

BACKGROUND: Evidence indicates that smartphone addiction is associated with a series of psychological problems. However, there is still a lack of sufficient understanding regarding smartphone addiction that occurs in both negative and positive mental health conditions in youths. We aimed to map the network linking smartphone addiction (SMA) with negative (depression, anxiety, stress, loneliness) and positive (life satisfaction, social support, resilience, and self-efficacy) mental health factors in youths. METHODS: In a cross-sectional sample of 701 youths (aged 18.27 ± 1.57 years, 16-20 year

Relevance of circulating IgG levels as a marker of health in plasma donors.

BACKGROUND: Frequent plasma donation is associated with reduced circulating IgG levels, prompting many jurisdictions to apply IgG-based deferral thresholds as a precautionary donor-safety measure. However, whether low IgG in healthy individuals reflects clinically meaningful immunosuppression remains unclear. This study evaluated IgG as a marker for donor health by integrating immunological, behavioral and self-reported outcomes, including vaccine responses, return to donation, and health problems. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The kinetics of IgG decline associated with frequent plasma donation
