Alexithymia, emotional empathy, and self-regulation in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) who are starved have poor awareness (alexithymia), reduced understanding of others' mental states (cognitive empathy), and difficulty regulating personal emotions (self-regulation). Despite its important role in social interaction, sympathy for others (emotional empathy) has not been measured in AN. Furthermore, it is unknown how restoring weight affects the relationship among alexithymia, empathy, and self-regulation in AN. METHODS: Women with AN were tested longitudinally during their starvation period (N = 26) and after weight was restored

Are sleep symptoms predictors of resistant hypertension in a population-based sample? Findings from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey.

The aim of this study was to test the association of self-reported sleep symptoms to those identified with severe hypertension in a nationally representative sample of adults. Self-reported and study-measured health and sleep characteristics were collected by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2008. Of 10,526 individuals with completed sleep surveys participating in the study, the authors identified 379 patients with severe hypertension defined as those treated with ≥ 3 antihypertensive medications including a diuretic; 110 of these had resistant hyperte

Moderators of post-binge eating negative emotion in eating disorders.

The purpose of this study was to test the impact of two variables on post-binge eating negative emotion in a combined sample of women with anorexia nervosa (AN; n = 47) and bulimia nervosa (BN; n = 121). Participants completed two weeks of an ecological momentary assessment protocol during which they provided multiple daily ratings of overall negative affect and guilt and reported eating disorder behaviors including binge eating and self-induced vomiting. The results indicate that both overall negative affect and guilt exhibited a statistically significantly decrease in the hour immediately fo

Alcohol selectively impairs negative self-relevant associations in young drinkers.

The stress-dampening effects of alcohol have been attributed to 'appraisal disruption'- decreased ability of stimuli to evoke threatening associations in memory. Appraisal disruption could apply to oneself as well as situational stimuli. This question was investigated in undergraduate drinkers (n=90/Gender) with low or high anxiety sensitivity (AS; n=90/AS Group), a trait linked with hyper-vigilance to threat. Subjects received alcohol (0.7 g/kg males; 0.63 g/kg females), placebo or soft drink and performed a speech about their appearance. Sequence of drink administration and speech advisory (

Population groups at high risk for poor oral self care: the basis for oral health promotion.

OBJECTIVES: Identification of population groups at high risk for poor oral self-care in adults was needed in order to enable more focused planning of oral health promotion actions in Slovenia. METHODS: The study was based on the national health behaviour database in adults aged 25-64. Data collected in 2001 were used. The sample size was 15,379. The overall response rate was 64%, and 8,392 questionnaires were eligible for oral self-care assessment. A complex indicator based on oral hygiene, frequency of visiting a dentist, and nutritional habits was derived. The outcome of interest was poor o

Frequency and predictors of self-reported prospective memory complaints in individuals infected with HIV.

Failures of episodic retrospective memory (RetM) are among the most frequently reported cognitive complaints endorsed by individuals living with HIV infection. The present study sought to examine the nature, frequency, and determinants of self-reported complaints of prospective memory (ProM) in HIV, which is a singly dissociable and ecologically relevant aspect of episodic memory involving the execution of future intentions. Seventy-five HIV seropositive individuals and 60 seronegative volunteers were administered the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire (PMRQ) as part of extensi

Letter to editor on "Effects of a high-force hip lateral distraction mobilization in individuals with hip-related groin pain: a randomized controlled trial".

A double-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted. Thirty-five individuals with hip-related groin pain were randomized into an experimental group (EG) or a sham group (SG). Both groups performed four sessions (two per week) over two consecutive weeks. The primary outcomes were pain intensity and passive hip ROM. The secondary outcomes were muscle function, physical function, QoL, and self-perceived improvement. Data were collected at baseline and post-treatment. Results: Significant between-group differences in favor of EG were found at post-treatment forpain intensity (in the last week

Body knowledge in children with congenital lower limb deficiency.

BACKGROUND: In order to effectively improve motor function, a sound understanding of one's body - for example, relative spatial position, relationships, names and functions of body parts - is essential. The aim of this study was to explore how children with congenital lower limb deficiency (LLD) perceive their bodies, particularly their legs. METHODS: Six children with congenital LLD and 14 controls, aged 5-12 years, were recruited for this study. They drew self-portraits and answered questions about names of body parts. These body part-related questions consisted of a production test, in whi

Adapting mHealth Interventions to Improve Self-Management of HIV and Reduce Substance Use Among Emerging Adults in Zambia: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa remains the region most affected by the HIV epidemic, with Zambia experiencing a substantial burden of disease. Young people with HIV are disproportionately impacted. Emerging adulthood (ages 18-24 years) is characterized by increasing independence, risk-taking behaviors, identity exploration, and changing social supports, all of which may impact HIV self-management, including medication adherence and retention in care. Substance use may further undermine HIV outcomes. Innovative interventions targeting HIV self-management and substance use reduction among Zambia

Cervical Cancer Screening in Transition: Global Challenges and Local Realities.

Cervical cancer remains a major global public health concern that disproportionally affects women in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), despite being largely preventable through effective primary and secondary prophylaxis. Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) is the principal cause of cervical cancer, highlighting the importance of both HPV vaccination and HPV-based screening. This narrative review examines current evidence on the natural history, prevention, and epidemiology of cervical cancer, with particular emphasis on screening practices and emerging innov

Development of a Dutch Information Standard for Advance Care Planning.

Advance care planning (ACP) information, concerning goals and preferences for future medical treatment and care, is often recorded but its digital exchange between healthcare providers is not yet self-evident. This paper describes the process of the development of a Dutch information standard for ACP, aimed to support this information exchange. For the current release of the information standard, a functional design with a dataset description based on Dutch Health Care Information Models and FHIR implementation guides for technical specifications were developed. This release underwent public c

The biopolitics of "previving": Femininity, labor, and reproduction.

"Previvors"-individuals who develop an identity around cancer-related genetic mutations they carry and come together in biosocial community-challenge conventional notions of illness by inhabiting a unique pre-diagnosis space. This study seeks to understand how previvors navigate their new biomedicalized identities and their relationships to gender, family, and reproduction while they undergo genetic testing, counseling, and preventative surgeries. By analyzing 41 semi-structured in-depth interviews with previvors, we explore their liminal pre-disease status. Gendered labor, reproductive impera

Purple Urine Bag Syndrome: Antibiotic Treatment or Not?

Purple urine bag syndrome (PUBS) is a relatively rare phenomenon characterized by purple discoloration of the urine, catheter, and collection bag in individuals with indwelling catheters often colonized by specific bacteria. Although typically asymptomatic, it requires appropriate diagnostic evaluation and, in some cases, targeted treatment. We present a case study of an 81-year-old male with an indwelling urinary catheter who developed an uncomplicated, self-limiting case of purple urine bag syndrome. The patient exhibited the characteristic purple discoloration of the catheter tubing and col

Prolonged Analgesia Following Short, Pulsed Meloxicam in Generalized Osteoarthritis: A Case Report and Focused Evidence Review.

Oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used to treat osteoarthritis (OA), but their risks rise with cumulative exposure across the gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and renal systems. We report a 67-year-old individual with generalized OA, no other chronic illnesses, no medication allergies, and no history of trauma, who self-administers meloxicam 15 mg once daily for seven consecutive days each month. Each monthly pulse is followed by approximately three weeks of analgesia without NSAID use between pulses, and no adverse effects have been observed. Prior evidence sugges

Case Report of Andersen-Tawil Syndrome: Rare Presentation of a Rare Disease.

Andersen-Tawil syndrome (ATS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by a triad of periodic paralysis, cardiac arrhythmias, and dysmorphic features, typically presenting in the first two decades of life. A 45-year-old man presented with acute lower motor neuron-type quadriparesis. He reported similar self-resolving episodes over the past 2 years, triggered by rest after exercise. There were no cardiac symptoms, dysmorphic features, or relevant family history. Biochemical evaluation revealed hypokalemia. Genetic testing confirmed a heterozygous nonsense mutation in the KCNJ2 gene (c.13C>T, p.
