Genomic analysis of adult case of ocular surface giant congenital melanocytic nevus and associated clinicopathological findings.

INTRODUCTION: Conjunctival nevi are the most common tumor of the ocular surface. There are some rare reports of so-called 'giant' conjunctival nevi. We report a case of a 47-year-old female with a cutaneous and ocular surface giant congenital melanocytic nevus and describe her clinical course. CASE DESCRIPTION: This is a retrospective case report of a single patient. A 47-year-old female with a history of biopsy-proven periorbital congenital melanocytic nevus, with an associated giant conjunctival nevus presented for structural and functional rehabilitation. Serial surgeries were performed an

Clinicopathological diversity and outcome of longitudinal melanonychia in children and adolescents: analysis of 35 cases identified by excision specimens.

AIMS: Longitudinal melanonychia in paediatric patients often represents a difficult diagnostic challenge, and studies emphasising its clinical and histopathological features are limited due to its low incidence in childhood. METHODS AND RESULTS: We retrospectively analysed 35 paediatric cases identified by excision specimens on their clinicopathological features, and performed fluorescence in-situ hybridisation on 13 available cases. Fingernails (77.1%) were more likely to be affected. Total melanonychia and Hutchinson's sign were observed in 10 (28.6%) and 14 (40.0%) cases, respectively. Nai

Skin color as a predictor of mental health in young Latinx children.

RATIONALE: Racial phenotype shapes the ways in which others perceive and interact with children, with implications for their immediate and long-term well-being. Still, few empirical studies have examined these links in Latinx children. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between skin color, as a salient marker of racial phenotype, and the mental health of young, Latinx children. METHODS: The present study was conducted in the United States between 2010 and 2013. Participants (N = 684) were Mexican- and Dominican origin 4 - 5-year olds who were rated based

Waistband Mycosis Fungoides: A New Clinical Variant of Early-Stage Disease.

Case 1: A 17-year-old white man was referred for evaluation of biopsy-proven patch-stage mycosis fungoides (MF) that had first appeared 5 years previously. Asymptomatic "bruises" had appeared under his football padding in a waistband distribution, and these lesions improved during each offseason but never fully resolved. His exposure history was only positive for swimming pool water and his athletic pads. On physical examination, large, irregular, geometric tan-colored patches were present along his waistband area, in areas of contact with his football padding, with an involved body surface ar

Congenital nevi with hypomelanosis and fine scales.

BACKGROUND: Nevus is a hamartoma or malformation of one or more skin components, resulting in aberrant differentiation of the cell lineage(s) mostly during developmental stages. Although multiple lineages may be involved in a nevus, the combination of melanocyte and keratinocyte abnormalities has been rarely discussed. OBJECTIVES: To present two cases of congenital nevi with hypomelanosis and superficial fine scales. MATERIALS & METHODS: Skin specimens of the patients were analysed by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. RESULTS: Morphological and immunohistochemical studies indica

Synchronous melanomas arising within nevus spilus.

Nevus spilus is a melanocytic cutaneous lesion consisting of a light brown background macule with numerous superimposed darker maculopapular speckles. Melanoma arising from a nevus spilus is rare, with less than 40 cases reported to date. The absolute risk for malignant transformation is not well defined, lacking a standardized management approach. We report a new case of melanoma arising from nevus spilus, with the additional peculiarity of multifocality. We offer our recommendations for the management of the condition.

Eruptive melanocytic nevi during azathioprine therapy for antisynthetase syndrome.

Eruptive melanocytic nevi (EMN) are rare multiple benign melanocytic nevi that develop within a few months. The phenomenon has been associated with a variety of dermatologic and systemic conditions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, epidermolysis bullosa, Addison disease, human immunodeficiency virus infection, and internal malignancy, among others. It also is commonly attributed to medications, particularly immunosuppressive and chemotherapeutic agents. We report a case of EMN in a 50-year-old man undergoing azathioprine therapy for antisynthetase syndrome.

Repigmentation patterns induced by NB-UVB and their relationship with melanocytic migration and proliferation in vitiligo.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Vitiligo is the most commonly acquired depigmentation disorder of the skin and is characterized by the destruction of melanocytes. Ultraviolet phototherapy with narrow band (UVB-NB) induces proliferation, differentiation, maturation, and migration of melanocytes. The clinical repigmentation is featured by follicular, marginal, and diffuse patterns. The aim of this study was to observe the process involved in the melanocyte migration and proliferation among these patterns and the unresponsive lesions following UVB-NB phototherapy. The focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and c-KIT we

Classification of neurological abnormalities in children with congenital melanocytic naevus syndrome identifies magnetic resonance imaging as the best predictor of clinical outcome.

BACKGROUND: The spectrum of central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities described in association with congenital melanocytic naevi (CMN) includes congenital, acquired, melanotic and nonmelanotic pathology. Historically, symptomatic CNS abnormalities were considered to carry a poor prognosis, although studies from large centres have suggested a much wider variation in outcome. OBJECTIVES: To establish whether routine MRI of the CNS is a clinically relevant investigation in children with multiple CMN (more than one at birth), and to subclassify radiological abnormalities. METHODS: Of 376 patien

[Antifungal activity of melanin in clinical isolates of Candida spp].

BACKGROUND: Melanocytes are cells located in epidermis and mucous membranes that synthesize melanin and cytokines. It is known that melanin has antimicrobial activity and that melanocytes are melanized in presence of microbial molecules. OBJECTIVE: To study the antifungal activity of melanin on Candida spp. METHODOLOGY: The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) to melanin was determined in 4 Candida ATCC strains (C. albicans SC5314, C. parapsilosis 22019, C. glabrata 2001, C. krusei 6258) and 56 clinical isolates of Candida spp. (33 C. albicans, 12 C. glabrata, 3 C. famata, 3 C. krusei, 3 C

Common skin problems in children.

Childhood dermatological problems contribute about one-third of all consultations in the setting of both pediatrics and dermatology outpatient services. Skin disorders in children may cause anxiety to parents. General Practitioners should be familiar with the common prevalent skin problems as immediate pediatric dermatology consultation may not be possible. Infections, infestations and dermatitis are the most prevalent diseases among Indian children. The scope of this review is to briefly highlight these common and other important dermatological problems in children.

Evaluation of the effect of disease duration in generalized vitiligo on its clinical response to narrowband ultraviolet B phototherapy.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) has been accepted as an effective therapy for generalized vitiligo. On the other hand, different factors seem to contribute to a good response. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of disease duration on its clinical response to NB-UVB phototherapy. METHODS: In this open and uncontrolled study, vitiligo was considered 'recent' when the duration of disease was less than or equal to 4 years and 'long standing' when it was greater than 4 years. The patients received NB-UVB thrice weekly with an initial dose of 200 mJ/cm(2) a

Monte Carlo simulations shed light on Bathsheba's suspect breast.

In 1654, Rembrandt van Rijn painted his famous painting Bathsheba at her Bath. Over the years, the depiction of Bathsheba's left breast and especially the presence of local discoloration, has generated debate on whether Rembrandt's Bathsheba suffered from breast cancer. Historical, medical and artistic arguments appeared to be not sufficient to prove if Bathsheba's model truly suffered from breast cancer. However, the bluish discoloration of the breast is an intriguing aspect from a biomedical optics point of view that might help us ending the old debate. By using Monte Carlo simulations in co

Genodermatoses caused by genetic mosaicism.

Genetic mosaicism is defined as the existence of at least two genetically distinct cell populations within one individual. Mosaic presentation of genetic disorders is common and is often particularly obvious in the skin, because there it will generate recognizable patterns. Recognizing those can frequently assist in establishing a diagnosis. In this review, we discuss the mechanisms that give rise to genetic mosaicism. We describe its most frequent cutaneous manifestations that are relevant to paediatric practice. While most mosaic genetic diseases are rare, it is important to recognize them s
